Leviticus 24:1–4 NKJV
Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Command the children of Israel that they bring to you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to make the lamps burn continually. Outside the veil of the Testimony, in the tabernacle of meeting, Aaron shall be in charge of it from evening until morning before the Lord continually; it shall be a statute forever in your generations. He shall be in charge of the lamps on the pure gold lampstand before the Lord continually.

iii. As the oil caused the lamp To be burning continually
So too… we
b. Interesting who was to provide the holy oil
i. Children of Israel were to bring it
ii. and then Aaron took charge of it to keep the lampstand burning
(people’s attitudes toward church and ministry)
Are you a participant IN ministry?
or are you a consumer OF ministry?
(Bible teaches us to be participants):
1 Corinthians 12:4–11 NKJV
There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them ()

Preparing the holy bread vs.5-9

Leviticus 24:5–9 NKJV
“And you shall take fine flour and bake twelve cakes with it. Two-tenths of an ephah shall be in each cake. You shall set them in two rows, six in a row, on the pure gold table before the Lord. And you shall put pure frankincense on each row, that it may be on the bread for a memorial, an offering made by fire to the Lord. Every Sabbath he shall set it in order before the Lord continually, being taken from the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant. And it shall be for Aaron and his sons, and they shall eat it in a holy place; for it is most holy to him from the offerings of the Lord made by fire, by a perpetual statute.”
Leviot
1. Twelve tribes of Israel
a. Equal amounts of flour -
2. Two rows – six in a row – Neat and orderly, not haphazard
1 Corinthians 14:40 NKJV
Let all things be done decently and in order.

Now the Lord spoke to Paul in the night by a vision, “Do not be afraid, but speak, and do not keep silent; for I am with you, and no one will attack you to hurt you; for I have many people in this city.”
Isaiah 43:2 NKJV
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you.

Protecting the holy Name - vs.10-14

Leviticus 24:10–13 NKJV
Now the son of an Israelite woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the children of Israel; and this Israelite woman’s son and a man of Israel fought each other in the camp. And the Israelite woman’s son blasphemed the name of the Lord and cursed; and so they brought him to Moses. (His mother’s name was Shelomith the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.) Then they put him in custody, that the mind of the Lord might be shown to them. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
Leviticus 24:10–14 NKJV
Now the son of an Israelite woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the children of Israel; and this Israelite woman’s son and a man of Israel fought each other in the camp. And the Israelite woman’s son blasphemed the name of the Lord and cursed; and so they brought him to Moses. (His mother’s name was Shelomith the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.) Then they put him in custody, that the mind of the Lord might be shown to them. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Take outside the camp him who has cursed; then let all who heard him lay their hands on his head, and let all the congregation stone him.
1. The son of an Egyptian man and a Hebrew woman
a. Father possibly one of the mixed multitude ( )
Or possibly mother was impregnated while a slave in Egypt
b. Wouldn’t be significant if it weren’t mentioned
c. Not a national nor a racial issue – spiritual issue
Numbers 11:14 NKJV
I am not able to bear all these people alone, because the burden is too heavy for me.
Numbers 11:4 NKJV
Now the mixed multitude who were among them yielded to intense craving; so the children of Israel also wept again and said: “Who will give us meat to eat?
Their attitudes and actions - adverse effect on Children of Israel - “Also wept again”
d. – Mixed multitude yielded to intense craving – affected
We know not to be unequally yoked with non-believers.... (hopefully obvious to you why)
But be careful in all your associations:
1 Corinthians 15:33 NKJV
Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.”
sometimes conviction about associations… “I will have a positive impact on them....” (reverse more likely - according to God’s word)
e. Unequally yoked /
2. He blasphemed the Name of the Lord and cursed.
a. Another version (ESV) - blasphemed the Name, and cursed.
b. 3rd commandment –
Exodus 20:7 NKJV
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
Seems to be more than just taking God’s name in vain… Blasphemed “the Name” AND cursed
c. It seems that it was common for Egyptians to curse their many gods. The root of this man’s sin is he considers the Lord God of Israel on the same level as the petty Egyptian gods.[1]
Exodus 22:28 NKJV
“You shall not revile God, nor curse a ruler of your people.
d.
3. They put him in custody that the mind of the Lord might be shown to them
a. They already knew Cursing mother or father – capital offense
Exodus 21:17 NKJV
“And he who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.
How much more someone who curses God’
b. Perhaps – because he was not a full-blooded Hebrew? Did it apply to foreigners?
c. Perhaps – How should the execution be carried out – Who would administer it? God Himself – them?
d. New situation for them… Seeking the Lord when the way forward is not clear – It is good to do !!
Proverbs 2:3–6 NKJV
Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, And find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding;
James 1:5 NKJV
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
Leviticus 24:14 NKJV
“Take outside the camp him who has cursed; then let all who heard him lay their hands on his head, and let all the congregation stone him.
Leviticus 24:14 NKJV
“Take outside the camp him who has cursed; then let all who heard him lay their hands on his head, and let all the congregation stone him.
1. Punishment
1. Punishment
a. Witnesses
i. ,
a. Witnesses
i. Serious crime - Later on…
Deuteronomy 17:6 NKJV
Whoever is deserving of death shall be put to death on the testimony of two or three witnesses; he shall not be put to death on the testimony of one witness.
Multiple witnesses - important - protects against false accusations
Multiple witnesses -
ii. How serious to ruin someone’s reputation through gossip, false accusations
The way people mock, revile, blaspheme God’s Name and His Nature causes me to shudder...
Interesting that the punishment for reviling against the Lord - Blaspheming Him is punishable by Stoning… (during Great Tribulation)
Revelation 16:8–9 NKJV
Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory.
Revelation 16:10–11 NKJV
Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain. They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and did not repent of their deeds.
then in a real sense… stoning from heaven:
Revelation 16:21 NKJV
And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great.

Appropriate Penatlies - vs.15-23

b. , ,
Leviticus 24:15–23 NKJV
“Then you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Whoever curses his God shall bear his sin. And whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall certainly stone him, the stranger as well as him who is born in the land. When he blasphemes the name of the Lord, he shall be put to death. ‘Whoever kills any man shall surely be put to death. Whoever kills an animal shall make it good, animal for animal. ‘If a man causes disfigurement of his neighbor, as he has done, so shall it be done to him—fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; as he has caused disfigurement of a man, so shall it be done to him. And whoever kills an animal shall restore it; but whoever kills a man shall be put to death. You shall have the same law for the stranger and for one from your own country; for I am the Lord your God.’ ” Then Moses spoke to the children of Israel; and they took outside the camp him who had cursed, and stoned him with stones. So the children of Israel did as the Lord commanded Moses.
The law for blasphemy against God applies to foreign born as well as those born in the land of Israel
1. 15-16 Now the rule is established – now we know what to do next time
a. Applies to all inhabitants of the land
2. 17-18
Human life is of more value than animal life
a. Does not give license to be cruel to animals
b. World today is upside down – man has been lowered to be at the same level with
Now they do not have to
i. Actually in the case of abortion – lower than animals
3. 19-21
a. Remember – the start of the nation
i. No police or civil magistrates
ii. Designed to protect the nation
b. There is no victimless crime – there is a price to be paid
Often we see injustice take place around us - we cry out to God!
i.
No-fault accidents, No-fault divorce....
c. Penalty that fits the seriousness of the crime
Amazed at how people in power can do things that the ordinary citizen (if doing the same) would be thrown in prison
They get a slap on the wrist, if anything...
d. Penalty prevents – one-upmanship
i. Arm and a leg and an eye – for an eye
ii. Human nature / flesh is to escalate
Genesis 4:23–24 NKJV
Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! For I have killed a man for wounding me, Even a young man for hurting me. If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”
Genesis 4:
You shall have the same law for the stranger and for one from your own country; for I am the Lord your God.
They didn’t know if capital punishment applied to the foreign-born in their land… now they know...
The tendency probably is to have tougher rules for strangers - than for the people you know...
Same law for all !! (No bias, no favoritism)
This was a civil law - for governing the land of Israel - But over time it became a maxim for personal conduct…
Matthew 5:38–42 NKJV
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.
