Abraham’s response

He went

So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
Genesis 15:5–6 ESV
And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.

Genesis 15:6 ESV
And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
Genesis 22:1–3 ESV
After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
Genesis 22:3 ESV
So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
Abraham believed and obeyed
Faith apart from works

Faith like Abraham; apart from works -

Rom 3:28
Romans 3:28 ESV
For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.
All that we do or say is an expression of what we believe and in whom we are trusting in that moment.
Many are saved going to the front; NONE are saved BY going to the front

A lifelong faith unto salvation

lifelong
Hebrews 11:1 ESV
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Faith is the trusting and relying upon God, not mere speech, not mere forms
Ephesians 2:8–9 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Philippians 1:6 ESV
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
- He who begun...
John 10:28 ESV
I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
salvation:
4:1 - What was gained?
4:3 - God counted him righteous

A sacrificial faith

What did he leave?
What will we have to leave?
Luke 18:28–29 ESV
And Peter said, “See, we have left our homes and followed you.” And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God,
Luke 18:28–30 ESV
And Peter said, “See, we have left our homes and followed you.” And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life.”

A faith in God

Not in the church
Not in certain pastors / ministers / mentors
It was God’s calling He responded to; it is God’s calling and Word we are to follow

A faith in God’s promises

I will (later) show you where
I will make a great nation
I will make you great
I will bless those who bless you
I will curse those who curse you
In you all the families of the earth will be blessed

A faith apart from works

Romans 3:28 ESV
For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.
All that we do or say is an expression of what we believe and in whom we are trusting in that moment.
Many are saved going to the front; NONE are saved BY going to the front
Because it was Jesus’s works that satisfied God, and were done in order to be counted to all who believe

Faith like Abraham; seen in works

Obedience

A jacket will keep you warm and dry
A seatbelt will keep you safe(r)
Chiropractors can aid in health and comfort
So...
If you believe church / the gospel is merely a ticket out of Hell or a requirement for a happy life you might well attend, but probably won’t be impacted about the Bible’s teachings of holy living,
If you believe God is who He is and that by grace you are in Christ, you will do things like pray, regularly read the Bible, faithfully participate in a local church, and order your life by God’s teachings

Proof

“The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians: who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.” - Brennan Manning
All who have a faith like Abraham’s are justified, counted righteous, by God. They are saved eternally apart from works they do, but if their faith is like Abraham’s we will see their faith in what they do for a lifetime.
