2 Timothy 1:7 KJV 1900
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Introduction:

2 Timothy 1:7–13 KJV 1900
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; 9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, 10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: 11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. 12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. 13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
FIVE TRUTHS ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT THAT CAN HELP US LIVE ROCK SOLID LIVES, FREE OF FEAR, AND RED HOT FOR JESUS CHRIST.

Christian Spirit

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
This verse describes a disposition that only a Child of God can experience.

The Holy Spirit is a Gift

Received at Salvation

Acts 2:38 KJV 1900
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 2:36–38 KJV 1900
36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. 37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Only those that know Jesus Christ as personal Saviour, who have had their sins washed white by the blood of Christ, who are forgiven from all their trespasses, can be indwelt by the Spirit of God:
Acts 8:18–21 KJV 1900
18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. 20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. 21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.

Your efforts have nothing to do with it.
Ephesians 2:8–9 KJV 1900
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Ratification of Salvation

Ratification of Salvation

Romans 8:8–11 KJV 1900
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost

Romans 8:14 KJV 1900
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Romans 8:16 KJV 1900
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
ILLUSTRATION:
The story is told about a little boy who was flying a kite. It was a windy day, and the kite kept going higher and higher. Finally it got so high that it was out of sight. A man passed by and saw the little boy holding onto the string. The man could not see the kite, and he asked the boy, “How do you even know you have a kite up there?” The boy replied, “Because I can feel it.”
Although we cannot see the Holy Spirit, we should be able to sense His work in our lives changing us into the image of Christ.

— [God] hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts..
“Earnest” = payment of part of a purchase price in advance, first installment, deposit, down payment, pledge
Ephesians 1:12–14 KJV 1900
12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Because He is of God...

The Holy Spirit Testifies of Jesus Christ

John 15:26 KJV 1900
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

The Holy Spirit Testifies of the Truth of God’s Word

John 16:13 KJV 1900
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
1 John 5:6–7 KJV 1900
This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
Statement — He’s not the spirit of mumbo jumbo, or chaos. He’s the Spirit that speaks truth, and testifies that Jesus saves!

The Holy Spirit is our Guide

John 16:13 KJV 1900
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
John 14:26 KJV 1900
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
ILLUSTRATION:
A park ranger at Yellowstone National Park was leading a group of hikers to a fire lookout. The ranger was so intent on telling the hikers about the flowers and animals that he considered the messages on his two-way radio distracting, so he switched it off. As the group neared the tower, the ranger was met by a nearly breathless lookout, who asked why he hadn’t responded to the messages on his radio. A grizzly bear had been seen stalking the group, and the authorities were trying to warn them of the danger.
Any time we tune out the Holy Spirit or ignore the warnings of the Bible we put ourselves and those around us in danger.
Statement — How much guidance are you allowing the Spirit of God to inject into your daily life?
(Christian Spirit)

Courageous Spirit

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
Statement — In a world consumed by fear, Christians can be bold.

Bold in Criticism

God reassured the prophet Jeremiah:
Jeremiah 1:8 KJV 1900
Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord.
The same God that Moses encouraged the Israelites in is the God we serve today
Deuteronomy 31:6 KJV 1900
Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
Psalm 56:11 KJV 1900
In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid What man can do unto me.
Hebrews 13:6 KJV 1900
So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
Hebrews 13:5–6 KJV 1900
5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. 6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
No matter what the world may think or say, we can be bold by the Spirit of God!
(Bold in Criticism)

Bold in Crises

Psalm 91:1–16 KJV 1900
1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: My God; in him will I trust. 3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, And from the noisome pestilence. 4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, And under his wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; Nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; Nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. 7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, And ten thousand at thy right hand; But it shall not come nigh thee. 8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold And see the reward of the wicked. 9 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, Even the most High, thy habitation; 10 There shall no evil befall thee, Neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. 11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, To keep thee in all thy ways. 12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, Lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. 13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: The young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. 14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. 15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. 16 With long life will I satisfy him, And shew him my salvation.

Bold in Christ

Hebrews 4:14–16 KJV 1900
14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
We have a constant confidant, an ever listening ear.
1 John 5:11–14 KJV 1900
11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
We can be bold in our prayers, confident of our standing before God in Christ, sure of our Salvation.

2 Thessalonians 2:13–15 KJV 1900
13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: 14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Ephesians 6:10–13 KJV 1900
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
How can we boldly stand to truth and right and Jesus Christ in an ever-darkening culture? By drawing on the Spirit of God for our strength!
Christians in this country need to repent of the pride in our hearts, of just cruising under our own power, of faking it; and fall on our knees and humble ourselves before God, and beg Him for His strength and power once again.
Quote — “Without the Spirit of God, we can do nothing. We are as ships without the wind, branches without sap, and like coals without fire, we are useless.”—Charles Spurgeon
Quote — “God is looking for people through whom He can do the impossible. What a pity that we plan only the things we can do by ourselves.”—A. W. Tozer
Are you standing for Christ in your own power? You won’t stand very tall then, or for very long. Stand by His power, which is inexhaustible, and always available.

Enabled to Speak

It takes the Holy Spirit of God to enable us to boldly speak for Christ. That was Paul’s prayer request:
Ephesians 6:18–20 KJV 1900
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; 19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

What has been the source of your strength in your day to day life? What are you relying on? What are you hoping in?
Spouse
Money
Job
Family
Intelligence
There is a power that you ought to be tapping into — it will make you a more capable Christian.
ILLUSTRATION — A young missionary, Herbert Jackson, was given a car to help him in his work. The car was a major asset, but it had one difficulty—it would not start without a push or a jump-start. Jackson devised a system to cope with the car’s inability to start. When he was ready to leave his home, he went to a nearby school and asked permission to bring some of the children out of class to help him push-start his car.
Throughout the day, he was careful to always park on a hill or to leave his engine running when he stopped for short visits. For two years the young missionary used what he believed was an ingenious method to enable him to use the car.
Although we cannot see the Holy Spirit, we should be able to sense His work in our lives changing us into the image of Christ.
When poor health forced the Jackson family to leave the field, a new missionary arrived to lead the mission. When Jackson explained to the new missionary his methods for starting the car, the young man opened the hood and began inspecting. “Why, Dr. Jackson,” he interrupted, “I believe the only trouble is the loose cable.” He gave the cable a twist, pushed the switch, and the engine roared to life.
For two years, Dr. Jackson had used his own devices and endured needless trouble. The power to start the car was there all the time—it only needed to be connected. Are you connected to the power of God?

Compassionate Spirit

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

The Model of Love

John 3:16 KJV 1900
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

The Message of Love

1 John 4:10 KJV 1900
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Romans 5:8 KJV 1900
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
We have a message of love to share

The Ministry of Love

1 Corinthians 13:13 KJV 1900
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
Galatians 5:13–14 KJV 1900
13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
John 13:34–35 KJV 1900
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Controlled Spirit

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

Self-Control

Is your mind controlled, disciplined, by the Holy Spirit of God?
Philippians 4:5–7 KJV 1900
5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
If your life is not inhabited and disciplined by an unexplainable, supernatural peace and calm of mind, you are not praying as you ought to be.
QUOTE — “What the Church needs today is not more machinery or better, not new organizations or more novel methods, but men whom the Holy Ghost can use—men of prayer, men mighty in prayer.”—E.M. Bounds
(Self-Control)

Submitting Control

ILLUSTRATION — When D.L. Moody was just starting in the ministry, he heard a preacher make this statement, “the world has yet to see what God can do with one man fully surrendered to Him.” Moody that night said, “By God’s grace, I’ll be that man!”
Galatians 5:24–25 KJV 1900
24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Romans 8:5 KJV 1900
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
Romans 6:13 KJV 1900
Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
Romans 12:1–2 KJV 1900
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
(Self-Control)
(Submitting Control)

Satisfying Control

There truly is Joy in Serving Jesus
Psalm 118:24 KJV 1900
This is the day which the Lord hath made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 126:3 KJV 1900
The Lord hath done great things for us; Whereof we are glad.
The Spirit of God satisfies, what He brings into your life is so much better than the temporary satisfaction that the world and sin have to offer:
Galatians 5:22–24 KJV 1900
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
