Purification v23-24
Purification v23-24
23 Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
Copies of the Heavenly things needed purification.
Copies????
Read Heb 9:2-7
“These rites”
read Heb 9:22
God instructed them to build the tent (tabernacle in KJV.)
Later would be a temple.
This place was a copy of the actual in heaven.
God gave them a way to deal with their sin
sacrificial system (daily, seasonally, yearly)
This is pointing to the yearly sacrifice of Atonement.
God established a High Priest to go before God on behalf of the people.
None of this happened until sin was dealt with.
So that was the deal with the tabernacle…BUT…
The Actual Heavenly things needed purification from Better Sacrifices.
Where there is a copy there is something genuine.
Where there is an earthly temple with the Most Holy Place
There is also a heavenly temple with the Throne of God.
The original is better so therefore the sacrifices must better also.
Why was this purification from better sacrifices so important?
Why was this purification from better sacrifices so important?
24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.
Christ entered into Heaven itself.
Where there was a tabernacle where a High Priest would enter once a year to perform the sacrifice of Atonement.
Now we see Christ who entered into heaven itself.
What is understood here is.... (explained earlier)
Christ is now our High Priest
Better sacrifices required a better High Priest
What is Christ doing as our High Priest?
“Now to appear in the presence of God.” (v24)
Highlighted in Heb 9:11-12
11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
Verse 12 here led us deeper into this reality of atonement through Christ by our...
ETERNAL REDEMPTION
not paid for by blood of goats, calves
but rather by His own blood.
So we have a better High Priest, namely Jesus Christ, and HE is in a better tabernacle, in heaven itself.
So what does all this mean for the sacrifice that was made by Christ for our atonement?
Eternal Sacrifice v25-26
Eternal Sacrifice v25-26
(For Christ did not enter into the earthly tent to offer sacrifices…)
25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own,
here is where atonement under the Law fell short
It COULD NOT remove sin comepletely
The High Priest didn’t offer a sacrifice of his own blood
besides being wierd
It would be totally ineffective
Christ offered a sacrifice by given His own blood
He was the only one qualified to do so
He didn’t need to be purified because He was pure.
So the MAIN point here is that...
The sacrifice made by Christ did not need to be repeated.
Christ said He did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it.
When he hung on the cross and said “It is finished”
He had given the eternal sacrifice or our atonement!!!
26 for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
Reasoning:
“… for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world...”
Result:
“… But as it is, he had appeared once and for all at the end of the age to put away sin by the sacrifice f himself.
Christ put away sin, once and for all, by the sacrifice of Himself.
Now What? v27-28
Now What? v27-28
Having explained this sacrifice, Paul turns the focus back to us..
27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
Living in “the dash”
What will you life consist of?
Peter tells us that we are a ROYAL PRIESTHOOD.
Paul encourages us to give our lives as a LIVING SACRIFICE.
You don’t need to earn your salvation but you need to respond to it.
