Introduction

We must be delivered from our old kingdoms. This takes time. He is the true exodus who delivers us from darkness. He alone can bring us into his kingdom.
Why is it important?
Before we look to Jesus, we often look to so many different things to rescue us, and so many of us know that Jesus is the answer, but it’s hard sometimes to know what that means or what that looks like.
For the Exodus, it was following Jesus in the pillar of fire and smoke.
What do I want them to do?
What do I want them to do?
Why is it important?
What is the single most persuasive idea?
Only Jesus can be the true exodus.
The Exegesis:
- For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
This is in the context of Jesus saying that if anyone wants to follow him, or come after him, they must deny themselves and take up his cross daily and follow him.
shows us what it means to pick up your cross, to deny oneself - it means giving up the human competition and to walk away a life centered on self-gain, self-pleasure, and self-indulgence, and self-preservation.
If we follow Jesus, we cannot thereby seek our own ambition, but we must be people marked by the ambition of the one we follow - and his ambition meant to give up his life for the glory of the Father and the good of those who follow Him.
- For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?
benefit, profit, aid - how do we benefit if we gain all the possessions of the world but we actually lose ourselves.
- For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
Jesus is going to die - he is going to be sacrificed and people will seek to shame them on account of him and his teaching (which would have been blasphemous to anyone who did not have faith).
Tri-part glory here: Glory of Jesus, Glory of the Father, and glory of the holy angels.
- But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.
Luke is setting us up for what he is about to do on the mountain. To see the Kingdom of God is to behold the glory of God in all his splendor.
That’s why, with baptized eyes and imagination, we can see the world through the glory of God.
- Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray.
(reminds me of how Moses took Aaron and Joshua with him to pray in Exodus)
- And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white.
Who else has gone up a mountain with a friend, met with God, and came down with his face shining.

1 “Moreover, you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine twined linen and blue and purple and scarlet yarns; you shall make them with cherubim skillfully worked into them. 2 The length of each curtain shall be twenty-eight cubits, and the breadth of each curtain four cubits; all the curtains shall be the same size. 3 Five curtains shall be coupled to one another, and the other five curtains shall be coupled to one another. 4 And you shall make loops of blue on the edge of the outermost curtain in the first set. The eleven curtains shall be the same size. 9 You shall couple five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves, and the sixth curtain you shall double over at the front of the tent. 10 You shall make fifty loops on the edge of the curtain that is outermost in one set, and fifty loops on the edge of the curtain that is outermost in the second set. 11 “You shall make fifty clasps of bronze, and put the clasps into the loops, and couple the tent together that it may be a single whole. 12 And the part that remains of the curtains of the tent, the half curtain that remains, shall hang over the back of the tabernacle. 13 And the extra that remains in the length of the curtains, the cubit on the one side, and the cubit on the other side, shall hang over the sides of the tabernacle, on this side and that side, to cover it. 14 And you shall make for the tent a covering of tanned rams’ skins and a covering of goatskins on top. 15 “You shall make upright frames for the tabernacle of acacia wood. 16 Ten cubits shall be the length of a frame, and a cubit and a half the breadth of each frame. 17 There shall be two tenons in each frame, for fitting together. So shall you do for all the frames of the tabernacle. 18 You shall make the frames for the tabernacle: twenty frames for the south side; 19 and forty bases of silver you shall make under the twenty frames, two bases under one frame for its two tenons, and two bases under the next frame for its two tenons; 20 and for the second side of the tabernacle, on the north side twenty frames, 21 and their forty bases of silver, two bases under one frame, and two bases under the next frame. 22 And for the rear of the tabernacle westward you shall make six frames. 23 And you shall make two frames for corners of the tabernacle in the rear; 24 they shall be separate beneath, but joined at the top, at the first ring. It shall be made with cherubim skillfully worked into it. 32 And you shall hang it on four pillars of acacia overlaid with gold, with hooks of gold, on four bases of silver. 33 And you shall hang the veil from the clasps, and bring the ark of the testimony in there within the veil. And the veil shall separate for you the Holy Place from the Most Holy. 34 You shall put the mercy seat on the ark of the testimony in the Most Holy Place. 35 And you shall set the table outside the veil, and the lampstand on the south side of the tabernacle opposite the table, and you shall put the table on the north side. 36 “You shall make a screen for the entrance of the tent, of blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, embroidered with needlework. 37 And you shall make for the screen five pillars of acacia, and overlay them with gold. Their hooks shall be of gold, and you shall cast five bases of bronze for them.
the “appearance [eidos] of his face was altered.” The idea in this verse is that this is the first time in Jesus’ ministry that his brilliant face and garments now accord with his divine nature. “appearance” is not present in Matt or Mark. This is the same word that appears in the description of the tabernacle in “Set up the tabernacle according to the plan [eidos] shown to you on the mountain.” Eidos is a rare word in the NT, occuring only five times, but again in Luke at 3:22 at the baptism of Jesus. Eiodos connects the transfiguration with both the baptism and the tabernacle, which are the two referents that guide a proper understanding of Luke’s transfiguration narrative.

Luke: An Introduction and Commentary Y. The Transfiguration (9:28–36)

All three Synoptists agree that Moses and Elijah talked with him, the great lawgiver and a great representative of the prophets. Together they point to the hour of fulfilment of all that the Old Testament foreshadows. Only Luke tells us that the subject of the conversation was Jesus’ departure, i.e. his death (cf. 2 Pet. 1:15). That such a topic was chosen at such a time shows how central the death of Jesus is. The use of the word exodos for death is unusual and we should probably discern some exodus

Jesus by his ‘exodus’ would deliver his people from a far worse bondage.

The Pillar New Testament Commentary: The Gospel according to Luke Jesus: The Human Tabernacle of God (9:28–36)

The exodus from Egypt, the foundational episode of redemption and formation of Israel into a people and nation, becomes a prefigurement of Jesus’ passion, through which he redeems people from the power of sin and forms them into the church.

For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.” 49 John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.” 50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.” 51 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. 53 But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55 But he turned and rebuked them. 56 And they went on to another village. 57 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 59 To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 60 And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead.
