Greetings…
Up to this point we have been studying the “Beatitudes Of The Bible” with the focus on the verses that because with “Blessed Are Those.”
Up to this point we have been studying these beatitudes found in the Old Testament.
Today we begin looking in the New Testament starting with the first found in , the start of the Sermon on the Mount.
In these next several beatitudes “Jesus shows the vehicle to true inner happiness and peace.”
Those that don’t know the joy found in the New Testament often believe in the beatitudes of the world.
Blessed are those who are rich.
Blessed are those who are great and powerful.
Blessed are those who lay up treasures on earth.
Blessed are those who are highly educated.
Blessed are those spend their days pursuing only physical pleasure.
Blessed are those that have a lot of people liking their social media posts.
Everyone wants to be happy.
Everyone wants to fully know how to enjoy life fully, even when tragedy strikes.
These beatitudes give us the key to blessedness in our lives.
With this in mind let’s examine our lesson this morning.
Blessed Are The Poor In Spirit
Blessed Are The Poor In Spirit
Worldly Vs Godly Wisdom.
Worldly Vs Godly Wisdom.
Here in this opening statement we are met face to face with the difference between the wisdom of men and the wisdom of God.
Who in this world, besides Christians, would consider “poor” as a blessing or something what will being happiness and joy to ones life?
How true it is what Paul stated by way of God’s wisdom.
26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.
What Is Poor In Spirit?
What Is Poor In Spirit?
Most of us know what it means to be poor in material things or to be poor in health.
It, of course, means to be lacking greatly in those things, but that isn’t really all that is involved is it.
Part of understanding poverty is not just seeing what is lacking but “recognizing what is needed.”
People might have “few possessions, but not feel poor.”
How many people I have talked with that grew up very poor monetarily speaking but they all over and over have said, “I didn’t know I was poor.”
The point is this, to be poor is more than not having our necessities it also includes recognizing we don’t have those understandings.
Again, what does it mean to be “poor in spirit?”
First, it is realizing when you don’t have the spiritual blessings necessary to “inherit the kingdom of heaven.”
For the non-child of God one must realize they are without the blessing of salvation.
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
24 I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”
3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
For the child of God one must realize when they are without all the spiritual blessings found in Christ while in sin.
26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
2 Pt
20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”
Second, it is realizing we need those spiritual blessings in Christ.
When we obey the gospel we are blessed with “every spiritual blessing.”
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
Being poor in spirit isn’t just realizing when we are missing those spiritual blessings but our need for them. To be poor in spirit means realizing that without God I have nothing and am nothing.
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
To be poor in spirit means realizing that without God I have nothing and am nothing.
12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
10 So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’ ”
Summary
Summary
This first beatitude “blessed are the poor in spirit” is the foundation upon which all the other will be built.
This is the fundamental trait that must be found in all of God’s children.
Man is destitute, indigent, and poverty-stricken without God.
The next question then we must ask is, “How can someone like this be considered happy?”
The answer lies in the last phrase of this beatitude.
Theirs Is The Kingdom Of Heaven
Theirs Is The Kingdom Of Heaven
Poverty Leads To Riches.
Poverty Leads To Riches.
God has always blessed those who humble themselves before Him and recognize their deficiencies without Him.
18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
17 Because of the iniquity of his unjust gain I was angry, I struck him; I hid my face and was angry, but he went on backsliding in the way of his own heart.
2 All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the Lord. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.
13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
It is these that are poor that are truly rich.
8 “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life. 9 “ ‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.
5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?
Spiritual Riches Lead To Heaven.
Spiritual Riches Lead To Heaven.
When we lay up our treasures in heaven the kingdom of heaven is our inheritance.
34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,

Conclusion
Conclusion
When and only when we become poor in spirit will we humble ourselves in obedience to God’s direction.
Once we submit ourselves to His direction, He will bless us immeasurably with all spiritual blessings in Christ.
Invitation
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
