Who am I?
Personal
Who do we ask to answer that question? What have we believed the answer to be? Though this is an important question, there is one even more important. One that we cannot get wrong.
Biblical
Mark has written His gospel to introduce us to Jesus
We have seen tremendous accounts of power, love, and life changing teaching
Now, Jesus turns to those who follow him and ask them to answer
Subject

“But who do you say that I am?”
Peter responds
“You are the Christ”
Right words - misunderstood meaning
Jesus strictly charged them to tell no one about him
Glorified (1-3)
“Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death untill they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power”
“After 6 days” - similar language of Moses meeting with God at Mt. Sinai ()

Peter says to Jesus
“Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”
For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified
A cloud overshadowed them
Voice came out of the cloud
“This is my beloved Son; listen to Him”
Suddenly, no one there with them except Jesus
Suffer/Risen (9-13)
Come down from the mountain
Jesus charged them to tell no one what they saw until the Son of Man had been risen from the dead
They kept the matter to themselves
questioning what this rising from the dead might mean
They asked Jesus
“Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”
Jesus responds
“Elijah does come first to restore all things.
And how it is written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt?
But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him”
