Jesus gives seven reasons why the believer should never be anxious

Introduction

Being a Christian means trusting God above everything else
Whenever we don’t trust God more than our own resources, we become anxious, and this dishonors God.
Proposition: A Christian should be characterized by peace and calmness, not anxiety and worry
Transition: Why should we not be anxious? Jesus gives us six reasons.

Seven Reasons Not to be Anxious

Anxiety stems from the idolatry of self-sufficiency (v 24)
You cannot serve two masters
You cannot serve God and money
Therefore learn to trust in the security of God’s care, not the security of money
You can trust God to feed you (v 25-26)
If God feeds the birds, who do not work for food, he will feed you, who are of much greater value
Life is more than food
If God feeds the birds, who do not work for food, he will feed you, who are of much greater value (v 25-26)
If God feeds the birds, who do not work for food, he will feed you, who are of much greater value
life is more than food
Anxiety gains you nothing (v 27)
You can trust God to clothe you (v 25, 28-30)
God clothes the lilies, which neither toil nor spin, with more glory than Solomon
If God clothes the grass, which is burned up, all the more so will he clothe you
Therefore to trust God to clothe you is to have faith in him
Anxiety makes you like an unbeliever, not a believer (v 31-32)
Fretting over food and clothing is what the nations do
Your heavenly Father knows you need such things
If you prioritize God’s kingdom and his righteousness, you can trust him to provide for you (v 33)
Anxiety about tomorrow is pointless; today is trouble enough (v 34)

Conclusion

Ultimately, anxiety in a believer’s life shows a lack of trust in God
As Christians, we should fear God above all else (), knowing that perfect love casts out fear (); we should take to heart what God himself says: “Be still, and know that I am God” (); or heed Peter’s advice: “Casting all your care upon him, for he cares for you” ()
When we trust God to take care of us, we exhibit the fruit of the Spirit (), and therefore honor God
In what ways do we need to trust God? With work? Deadlines? A health issue? Our finances? Family and relational difficulties?
