How many of you can relate to the guilt loop?
Guilt Loop
Sin -> Feel condemned-> Try to do better->Fail->Sin (Repeat)
Focusing on not sinning
Makes sense to focus on fixing the problem
However, focusing on something draws us to it
Driving
Hands follow eyes
Vehicle goes where hands go
So if focusing on the problem doesn’t get us closer to the solution, what is the answer?
Are you stuck feeling bad?
Why do you feel guilty if its not to keep you focused on where you sin?
What if I told you that freedom in Christ is not about trying not to sin, but about living forgiven?
What doesn living forgiven look like?
Understanding that my sins (past, present, future) have their atonement in the Cross of Jesus Christ
Romans 5:8 ESV
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Not living in a guilt loop
Sin->feel Convicted->Receive Grace->Live Forgiven
There is no room for condemnation in the life of the believer
Living in condemnation and attempting to manage sin leads us to live by the flesh
God has set us free from the flesh by freeing us through the sacrifice of Christ on the cross that we live out by the power of the Spirit
Its is not by our own works that we are justified… therefore it is not our failures that we need to focus on
Accepting forgiveness
Know that looking to jesus keeps you from sin… not staring at sin and trying to avoid it
Living with gratitude for what has already been done and not working for some sense of accomplishment or earning our way
This is living forgiven.
you are not condemned
You are a child of God indwelled with the spirit of Christ
Your sins have been atoned for on the cross of Christ
Respond out of that as your identity and not out of the identity of sinner
Close with time for response/reflection
Pray
