Introduction

Be Determined Chapter Ten: After We Say “Amen” (Nehemiah 10)

The story may be apocryphal, but it illustrates the point that this chapter makes.

In a certain church, there was a man who always ended his prayers with, “And, Lord, clean the cobwebs out of my life! Clean the cobwebs out of my life!”

One of the members of the church became weary of hearing this same insincere request week after week, because he saw no change in the petitioner’s life. So, the next time he heard the man pray, “Lord, clean the cobwebs out of my life!” he interrupted with, “And while you’re at it, Lord, kill the spider!”

It’s one thing to offer the Lord a passionate prayer of confession, such as we have in chapter 9, and quite something else to live an obedient life after we say “Amen.” But the people in the assembly were serious about their praying and were determined, by God’s grace, to make a new beginning and live to please the Lord.

THE VOW TO GOD (10:1–39): A special document is written up and signed by the leaders of the people.
Numbers 30:2 ESV
2 If a man vows a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
Numbers
Ecclesiastes 5:1–7 ESV
1 Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil. 2 Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few. 3 For a dream comes with much business, and a fool’s voice with many words. 4 When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. 5 It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay. 6 Let not your mouth lead you into sin, and do not say before the messenger that it was a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice and destroy the work of your hands? 7 For when dreams increase and words grow many, there is vanity; but God is the one you must fear.

Main Idea - A Heart of Confession Leads to a Walk of Repentance

Our relationship to the Lord is that of children to a Father, and our Father wants our obedience to be based on love. I don’t know of any examples in the New Testament of believers taking oaths of obedience to the Lord. Our obedience should be a joyful response to all that He has done for us in Christ (). We don’t succeed as Christians because we make promises to God, but because we believe the promises of God and act upon them.

2. A Walk of Repentance is a Walk in Holiness for All (10:29–39)

The document records six promises the people made to God.

Transition into the specific ways the Jews were covenanting to walk in holiness.

a. They will walk in Purity (vs. 30)

Nehemia
Nehemiah 10:30 ESV
30 We will not give our daughters to the peoples of the land or take their daughters for our sons.
They will not intermarry with non-Jews.
Be Determined 2. Separation as the People of God (Neh. 10:28, 30–31)

Separation is simply total devotion to God, no matter what the cost. When a man and woman get married, they separate themselves from all other possible mates and give themselves completely to each other. It is total commitment motivated by love, and it is a balanced decision: We separate from others to the one who is to be our life’s mate.

Be Determined 2. Separation as the People of God (Neh. 10:28, 30–31)

Only the Holy Spirit can give us the kind of balance we need to live a godly life in this ungodly world. The legalist wants to live by rules, but that style of life only keeps you immature and dependent on your spiritual leaders. The only way to grow in a balanced life is to give yourself totally to God and follow Him by faith.

b. They will walk in Obedience (vs. 31)

Nehemiah 10:31 ESV
31 And if the peoples of the land bring in goods or any grain on the Sabbath day to sell, we will not buy from them on the Sabbath or on a holy day. And we will forego the crops of the seventh year and the exaction of every debt.
Nehemiah
They will obey all the Sabbath laws.

c. They will walk in Service (vs. 32, 34, 39)

, ,
Nehemiah 10:32 ESV
32 “We also take on ourselves the obligation to give yearly a third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God:
Nehemiah 10:34 ESV
34 We, the priests, the Levites, and the people, have likewise cast lots for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, according to our fathers’ houses, at times appointed, year by year, to burn on the altar of the Lord our God, as it is written in the Law.
Nehemiah 10:39 ESV
39 For the people of Israel and the sons of Levi shall bring the contribution of grain, wine, and oil to the chambers, where the vessels of the sanctuary are, as well as the priests who minister, and the gatekeepers and the singers. We will not neglect the house of our God.”
They will take care of the Temple.

d. They will walk in Observance (vs. 33)

Nehemiah 10:33 ESV
33 for the showbread, the regular grain offering, the regular burnt offering, the Sabbaths, the new moons, the appointed feasts, the holy things, and the sin offerings to make atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God.
They will observe all the sacred festivals.

e. They will walk in Dedication (vs. 36)

Nehemiah 10:36 ESV
36 also to bring to the house of our God, to the priests who minister in the house of our God, the firstborn of our sons and of our cattle, as it is written in the Law, and the firstborn of our herds and of our flocks;
They will dedicate to the Lord the firstborn of their sons and animals.

f. They will walk in Giving (vs. 35, 37–38)

,
Nehemiah 10:35 ESV
35 We obligate ourselves to bring the firstfruits of our ground and the firstfruits of all fruit of every tree, year by year, to the house of the Lord;
Nehemiah 10:37–38 ESV
37 and to bring the first of our dough, and our contributions, the fruit of every tree, the wine and the oil, to the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and to bring to the Levites the tithes from our ground, for it is the Levites who collect the tithes in all our towns where we labor. 38 And the priest, the son of Aaron, shall be with the Levites when the Levites receive the tithes. And the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes to the house of our God, to the chambers of the storehouse.
They will pay their tithes .
