the doctrine of the Holy Spirit

the fullness of the Spirit… ( ; , )
we are clearly commanded to be filled with the holy spirit
Ephesians 5:15–20 KJV 1900
See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
now keep in mind this is not the indwelling of the holy spirit that comes at salvation
the bible talks about how we must seek after, ask for, and maintain the filling of the holy spirit
that is not saying we can lose of salvation but what is it saying?
its not saying to seek after the gifts of the spirit because they are divided to every christian and its defiantly not saying we should seek gifts we are not given
1 Corinthians 7:20 KJV 1900
Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called.
1 Corinthians 12:4–11 KJV 1900
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
The enduing of the Spirit (, , , )
the filling of the holy spirit is a special enduing of power where we can please the lord… we will be effective at doing the lord work only if we have the holy spirit
our gifts become more effective
1 Corinthians 12:4–7 KJV 1900
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
our calling becomes more effective
John 15:1–5 KJV 1900
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
our soul winning becomes more effective
Acts 1:8 KJV 1900
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
our serving (preaching, singing, teaching, whatever) becomes more effective
Colossians 3:16–17 KJV 1900
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
These gifts are not for our entertainment and they are not to glorify ourselves or our personal ministry
the holy spirits job (like we talked about last week) is to lift up the name of christ
we can’t and wont be filled with the holy spirit unless we empty ourselves sin and self...
our aspirations, our desires, our shortcomings must all be pushed aside if we are going to be filled with the spirit
be careful not to quench the Spirit ()
1 Thessalonians 5:19 KJV 1900
Quench not the Spirit.
How do we quench the Holy Spirits work in us?
by unconfessed sin ( ; )
Isaiah 59:2 KJV 1900
But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, And your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
1 John 1:9 KJV 1900
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
think whatever we wants but if we are going to live and operate with the holy spirit on our lives then we must keep our sin confessed...
if you’re doing whatever your doing in the flesh it wont be effective for the Glory of god like it was intended
performance without power is nothing more than a self fulfilling thing (and if you look at most tradition based ministries you will see this)
preaching or teaching without the spirit is powerless
ministry based on personal performance will always lead to self glorification in the church
and if we are honest self or fleshly ministry goes on quite often in the church
an un-submissive spirit (; )
James 4:5–7 KJV 1900
Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
submission to the will of god must superceded our own plans and will inconvenience us at times
most people who wanna serve god have their own idea of how they wanna serve god
and even though well intentioned if they are not serving how they are supposed to serve they will fail
we must be willing to turn over our will to the will of god and allow him to use us how he sees fit
Isaiah 55:8–9 KJV 1900
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, Neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are my ways higher than your ways, And my thoughts than your thoughts.
if we allow him to lead us we will not quench the spirit we will instead feed our “spiritual man” and grow in the spirit
but a self sufficient attitude will quench the spirit
carelessness in life and action will quench the spirit
when we follow our own way we will see bitter fruits which isn’t the fruit of the spirit… but when we follow the lord we will see the sweet fruit of the spirit in our lives and ministries
briefly i want to address the charismatic error when it comes to the Holy Spirit:
when look at anyhing we have to look at the scriptures and see if things line up or are even shown in the bible...
is there a place that tells us to “seek the baptism of the holy spirit?”
no
does the bible ever indicate that speaking in tongues is a sign of salvation?
no
does the Bible emphasize or de-emphasize the speaking in tongues?
de-emphasize
who is baptized with the Holy Spirit?
every believer when they believe
what was the speaking in tongues in the bible
it was the speaking of a known languages that was previously unknown to the person speaking but known to the person hearing
the argument can be made but even when it is made look at what Paul said
1 Corinthians 14:19 KJV 1900
Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
if what we are doing isnt drawing people to a closer relationship with Christ then what we are doing is wrong in the eyes of god

the intersession of the Holy Spirit

a christians relationship with god is a very dependent one if we are honest about it
yes god equipts us and teaches us and shows us all kinds of things to serve him, he never intends for us to serve him without him
Psalm 18:2 KJV 1900
The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.
Our prayer Partner (; )
most of us know the weakness of our flesh and the sin we fall into.... most of us know without the holy spirit guiding us we will fail and fall every time
truth is we need god for everything we do including prayer
we don’t always pray for whats best for us often we pray for whats convenient to us or what seems great at the time (garth brooks song unanswered prayers)
Romans 8:26–27 KJV 1900
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
romans 6:26-27
the holy spirits intercession for us is different that the intersession of christ look at his intercession:
Hebrews 7:24–28 KJV 1900
But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.
when christ intercedes for us it is because of our sin
he speaks to the father on our behalf and in our defense like a attorney will do in court
1 John 2:1 KJV 1900
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
we are told her to sin not, because that is the unreachable goal that we should still be reaching for because we serve the holy god of heaven
and the bible never says to sin as little as possible because that would be an excuse of sin… which the bible never does because god will never excuse sin...
god knows we will not be perfect until we reach heaven… but we have christ who will bring our case to the father because he paid the price for our sin and we accepted the salvation offered through his blood on the cross
Romans 8:34 KJV 1900
Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
this advocacy is what christ does and it isn’t the same intersession that the Holy Spirit does for us
the Holy Spirit intercedes for us and with us
the word “INTERCESSION” in , don’t translate to the same thing, same word but this is where a deeper knowledge of the original greek can help a bit...
the first word translates both “FOR and WITH” us
when we pray we should be asking the holy spirit to make clear what we need to pray for....
as the holy spirit impresses on your heart pray those things
and the holy spirit approaches the father with you and for you in that instance
God promises to meet our needs right? and if we searve him and seek after the rigth things he also promises to grant some of our desires as well
Psalm 37:4 KJV 1900
Delight thyself also in the Lord; And he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
John 15:7 KJV 1900
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
its actually helpful when praying to ask the only spirit to show you what you need to be praying in your life....
we cant minister with the holy spirit right?
then why do we pray without him?
the world is filled with people bitter at god for not being a genie in a bottle to give them this or that…
but those people also asked the wrong things of god
honestly how many of us need help in our prayer life???
start yoyr prayer life over then and ask the holy spirit to show us what and how to pray
