James 3:1
1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. 2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. 7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? 12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
Awesome responsibility of Speach (V10)
Awesome responsibility of Speach (V10)
10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.
10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
James begins here by dealing with teachers.
Pastors, Children and adult teachers ext. have great influence.
with this influence comes responsibility one day I will stand before God for how I handled his word
I will be judged by God higher than the layperson ever was.
This is one more reason why I ask you to pray for me.
In ancient Jeruslem a teacher had considerable statice what is being warned against here is those who simply asumed office he was particulary speaking to the pharesees
in matt 23:6-8 one can see
6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. 8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
What is being said here is the sin of love of position such a position places a person in a place of influence that gives him power to minipulate scripture as well as people
“let not many of you become teachers:
means that only certin individuals are called of God to that position and are gifted to expound the word of God
The Aweful tendency to sin (V.2)
The Aweful tendency to sin (V.2)
2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
This verse is significant. the ability to control the tounge implies the ability to control the whole body. Since sin usually involves the body. the ability to contrl the whole body involves the ability to control all forms of sin this would
This places the control of the tounge at the top of christian acheivement. control of the tounge is control of inward sin that drives the tounge to utter sinful things james in the folowing verses discusses this contro in detail

The Ability to tame the tounge (7-12)
The Ability to tame the tounge (7-12)
7 Every kind of animal, bird, reptile, and fish is tamed and has been tamed by humankind, 8 but no one can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in God’s likeness. 10 Blessing and cursing come out of the same mouth. My brothers and sisters, these things should not be this way.
James reminds us that every animal can be tamed however....
no human can tame the tounge it is...
restless evil
full of deadly posin
we curse people bade in God’s likeness
This is why we cant meet what is stated above in verse 2
2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
This should not be
James instructs that we must make every effort to tame our tounge
this includes
slander
gosip
flase stories
assumptions ext.
we must rid ourselves of them
it is sin
Application
be catiouss of your tounge
ask yourself if what you are about to say brings honor to God, and is curtious to those made in the image of God
