4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
'sa kanya ay may buhay, at ang buhay ay siyang ilaw ng sangkatauhan. Nagliliwanag sa kadiliman ang ilaw, at hindi ito nagapi kailanman ng kadiliman. ' Juan 1:4-5

Now, let’s dig into these
IN HIM WAS LIFE
The Word [Jesus] is the source of life, both physical through the creation of all things
This was confirmed by Paul
17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
He is also the source of our spiritual life

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
It is important to understand that Jesus was not talking simply about physical food here, though He is the provider of all things— here he talking about spiritual food
The “life”— a key word for John; it is used 36 times in the Gospel— 40% of its occurence is in the Gospel of John
For John, the ability of Jesus to grant life to those who walked in “darkness” or “death” is the key issue at stake
Jesus has the ability to do so because He was there in the beginning when God’s creative work took place
THAT LIFE WAS THE LIGHT OF ALL MANKIND
John alludes to the initial act of creation involving light ()
And he invokes the association of light with divine glory
19 The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.
Isaiah
Light is often used in the O.T. as metaphor for salvation and spiritual awakening
4 “Listen to me, my people; hear me, my nation: Instruction will go out from me; my justice will become a light to the nations.
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
THE LIGHT SHINES IN THE DARKNESS
The contrast between light and darkness is a prominent theme in the Gospel of John
The psalmist wrote
105 Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
AND THE DARKNESS HAS NOT OVERCOME IT
Overcome— Katalambano in Greek— means “take hold of” or “seize”
It’s meaning is ambiguous— having a double meaning— open to more than one interpretation
