Peace - 5:1

War footing by nature

Romans 1:18 ESV
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
Romans 3:11–12 ESV
no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
Romans 8:7 ESV
For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.
John 3:36 ESV
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Romans 4:23–25 ESV
But the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.

Past - Christ Jesus’s death & resurrection
Past - the application thru faith
This is not so for the unbeliever; there is a radical and essential distinction
Psalm 1:6 ESV
for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
Present - our standing before God
Having peace with God, having His ongoing blessing, having His positive disposition toward us is all unmerited

Hope - 5:2b-5

Hope - a solid confidence

Rejoice in sufferings
Romans 8:28 ESV
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Job - though he slay me, I will hope in Him
2 Corinthians 4:17–18 ESV
For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
Trusting in God does NOT put us to shame
Romans 5:5 ESV
and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
As we commemorate the sacrifice of Jesus for our sins, let us then look in hope to the future; remembering and experiencing His love for us
