Today - The seventh commandment; Do not commit adultery
Do not commit adultery.
What is adultery?
That is always the type of questions we ask, so we can feel good about ourselves
well, I technically am good
Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible - Breach of the “ONE FLESH” relationship of the marriage. It describes any act of intimacy between anyone other than their spouse
I do not believe that anyone wakes up one day and thinks, I am going to have an affair today.
It is typically something that happens over time
it doesn’t start as something physical, but emotional
intimate conversations that should not ever have been had, with people that they should have never been had with
20-40 % of men commit adultery, 20-25% of women commit adultery in America
Awesome! Of all sins that there are… we are pretty good at this one
At the same time… how honest are they?
We know that Jesus spoke to us that not only the physical act, but lusting in our hearts for another is adultery
Thomas Watson said of this command, “there is something tacitly implied and something expressly forbidden.”
meaning that there is more to this than simply stopping yourself from physically doing something
We understand the forbidden
We are not to have intimate relations outside of our marriage
I could give you the x amount of steps to not committing adultery
set up these barriers in your life to keep your marriage pure
those are out there… you can find them about anywhere
but I do not see this command as much as a behavior problem as it is a heart problem

This Command Reveals Our Impure Heart

This is what we have said about the entire law before
it reveals our sin, that is why the law is good
if we see our sin, we see our need for a savior
because we can attempt the steps to fix ourselves, but we always end up right back here.
revealing that we are still falling
We want our flesh satisfied
we look for worldly things to satisfy our flesh
and we are told, or sold the idea that this is normal, how God created us and God wants you to be happy
so go get yours, do what makes you happy
God does not want you happy, he wants you holy!
God knows that when we are made holy, we won’t be happy in an instance, but joyful for a lifetime.
we look for other gods to satisfy our flesh
When we finally realize that we will never really satisfy ourselves, we look for a God that will
and we read scripture and twist it to fit what we want to believe
When we fall to these things, we blame God for giving us this desire
But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire. 15 Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.
But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire. 15 Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.
We end up with a hard heart and a depraved mind
8 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served what has been created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever. Amen. 26 For this reason God delivered them over to disgraceful passions. Their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 The men in the same way also left natural relations with women and were inflamed in their lust for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the appropriate penalty of their error. 28 And because they did not think it worthwhile to acknowledge God, God delivered them over to a corrupt mind so that they do what is not right. 29 They are filled with all unrighteousness, evil, greed, and wickedness. They are full of envy, murder, quarrels, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, arrogant, proud, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 senseless, untrustworthy, unloving, and unmerciful. 32 Although they know God’s just sentence—that those who practice such things deserve to die—they not only do them, but even applaud others who practice them.

FROM IDOLATRY TO DEPRAVITY
Do not get caught up in the homosexual part of this passage and believe that it exempts you if you do not are not tempted in that way

calls out all sexual sin
passage starts with exchanging the truth of God for a lie…
28 And because they did not think it worthwhile to acknowledge God, God delivered them over to a corrupt mind so that they do what is not right. 29 They are filled with all unrighteousness, evil, greed, and wickedness. They are full of envy, murder, quarrels, deceit, and malice. When we know the truth of God and exchange it for a lie, in time, God will deliver us over to our own corrupt mind
the heart is filled with unrighteousness
they not only do them, but applaud those who practice them
this is the evil in our hearts, this is the evil of all kinds of sexual sin including adultery
We think that we can play with sexual sin and not get burnt
For a prostitute’s fee is only a loaf of bread, but the wife of another man goes after a precious life. 27 Can a man embrace fire and his clothes not be burned? 28 Can a man walk on burning coals without scorching his feet?

but the wife of another man goes after a precious life.
Sexual sin is not something to play with, you will get burnt
27 Can a man embrace fire
and his clothes not be burned?
Paul writes that we are to flee from all sexual immorality
that means to run in the opposite direction, not seeing where the line is but to RUN!
28 Can a man walk on burning coals
does that mean that sex is bad, not in design of God
fire in my living room is destructive, as is sex outside of the covenant of marriage
without scorching his feet?

This Command Calls us to a Pure Heart

We cannot look at sex and marriage in the same way that the world does
and we cannot expect the lost to see it the same way that we do
You adulterous people! Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the friend of the world becomes the enemy of God. Or do you think it’s without reason that the Scripture says: The spirit he made to dwell in us envies intensely? But he gives greater grace. Therefore he says: God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. 7 Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
we cannot expect the lost to live up to something that we ourselves do not

But he gives greater grace. Therefore he says:
God resists the proud,
We must acknowledge that our flesh is in contrast, at war with, God v4
but gives grace to the humble.,g
You cannot desire worldly things, satisfy the flesh and be in good standing with God
we all have different things that our hearts desire, that we struggle with that satisfy the flesh
Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
some it is alcohol, some it is food, some it is sexual sin
but God did not create us with evil in our hearts, chasing after evil
we must understand that when we chase after such things, or snuggle up to the world in the sins that we like, we are at odds with God
Humbly draw near to God v6
You cannot purify your own heart
we do not overcome our sin and problems and then come to God
Jesus did not die on the cross after we conquered sin
The Spirit does not come to live inside the believer once we are perfect
We must come humbly in repentance and receive the grace that God offers
God knows you and your sin
the answer is not to try to hide it from him, but to repent
Adam and Eve trying to cover themselves when they realize they’re naked
God asks them, “Who told you that you were naked?”
He will purify our hearts v8
drawing near to him is impossible if we are going opposite way
he will draw near to us and purify us
cleanse us from all unrighteousness

This Command Reminds us of Our Redeemed Heart

Indeed, your husband is your Maker—his name is the Lord of Armies—and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of the whole earth. For the Lord has called you, like a wife deserted and wounded in spirit, says your God. “I deserted you for a brief moment, but I will take you back with abundant compassion. In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but I will have compassion on you with everlasting love,” says the Lord your Redeemer.
Indeed, your husband is your Maker—
though he hid his face for a time, he has come to redeem
Afterward, the people of Israel will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come with awe to the Lord and to his goodness in the last days.

and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer;
Afterward, the people of Israel will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come with awe to the Lord and to his goodness in the last days.
Israel exiled for a time due to adulterous worship
God brought them back, now calls them his people
he is called the God of the whole earth.
In the same way, we have left the love of our God to chase after another
For the Lord has called you,
God gave himself to present a purified bride to himself
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her with the washing of water by the word. 27 He did this to present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and blameless.
like a wife deserted and wounded in spirit,
says your God. “I deserted you for a brief moment, but I will take you back with abundant compassion. In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but I will have compassion on you with everlasting love,” says the Lord your Redeemer.
One day, we will celebrate a wedding feast, living forever with our prince as his bride
Let us be glad, rejoice, and give him glory, because the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his bride has prepared herself. She was given fine linen to wear, bright and pure.
says your God.
After this I heard something like the loud voice of a vast multitude in heaven, saying, Hallelujah! Salvation, glory, and power belong to our God, because his judgments are true and righteous, because he has judged the notorious prostitute who corrupted the earth with her sexual immorality; and he has avenged the blood of his servants that was on her hands. A second time they said, Hallelujah! Her smoke ascends forever and ever! Then the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God, who is seated on the throne, saying, Amen! Hallelujah! A voice came from the throne, saying, Praise our God, all his servants, and the ones who fear him, both small and great! Then I heard something like the voice of a vast multitude, like the sound of cascading waters, and like the rumbling of loud thunder, saying, Hallelujah, because our Lord God, the Almighty, reigns! Let us be glad, rejoice, and give him glory, because the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his bride has prepared herself. She was given fine linen to wear, bright and pure.
“I deserted you for a brief moment,
When we remember what the bridegroom has done for us, we will not want to stray to another.
but I will take you back with abundant compassion.
Hallelujah!
In a surge of anger

I hid my face from you for a moment,
