You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.
And the Lord spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘When you come into the land which I give you, then the land shall keep a sabbath to the Lord. Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather its fruit; but in the seventh year there shall be a sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a sabbath to the Lord. You shall neither sow your field nor prune your vineyard. What grows of its own accord of your harvest you shall not reap, nor gather the grapes of your untended vine, for it is a year of rest for the land. And the sabbath produce of the land shall be food for you: for you, your male and female servants, your hired man, and the stranger who dwells with you, for your livestock and the beasts that are in your land—all its produce shall be for food.
· Not only a weekly Sabbath – But every seventh year a Sabbath year (year of rest for the land)
How it was supposed to be observed:
6 years – sowing , pruning, reaping
Every 7th year – Sabbath rest
No sowing, no pruning, no reaping, no gathering
The fruit that grew that season would be for food only, not for sale or trade
Purpose – give the land a rest
Why not crop rotation?
Not only rest for the land
Rest for the owner
Rest for the workers
Even rest for the animals
Why ?
(vs.2) 'When you come into the land which I give you…
It was not their land – it was the Lord’s
He was giving it to them for their use only.
Can you imagine the impact on the owner of the Land?
He tilled the ground
He sowed the seed
He pulled the weeds, cared for the plants as they grew…
He could eat the produce in the sabbath year…but…
So could his servants.
So could his hired hands
So could the stranger passing through
So could his livestock
So could the wild animals
Our house
1 plum
2-3 orange
1 lemon bush
1 pear
1 cherry
It was a reminder to the children of Israel that the Land was the Lord’s
They are just stewards of it
Amazingly…
No record of the children of Israel ever obeying the Lord in this command
Why would someone NOT want to obey the Lord in this command ?
Two reasons… (Both have to do with our human nature)
Greed !!
Look how much we can sell !!
Hell and Destruction are never full;
So the eyes of man are never satisfied.
Fear !!
§ I know this is God’s command, but I just don’t know if I can trust Him…
I know this is God’s command, but I just don’t know if I can trust Him…
§ The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe.
The fear of man brings a snare,
But whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe.
The fear of what men may do – is a snare
The fear that is in man – is also a snare
Fear has grabbed our community
Hoarding – I can’t trust God’s provision – I better get as much as I can so I don’t have to trust the Lord
Irrational – toilet paper?
Do you know the difference between tp and a shower curtain?
No
So you’re the one !!
So the first seventh year rolled around…
They disobeyed – nothing happened….
The second seventh year rolled around….
They disobeyed – nothing happened again !!
Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
Mistaking God’s silence, for His approval…
Problem was – this was God’s land – they were just caretakers…
God’s land WAS going to get it’s Sabbath rest…
And Azariah the chief priest and all the priests looked at him, and there, on his forehead, he was leprous; so they thrust him out of that place. Indeed he also hurried to get out, because the Lord had struck him.
King Uzziah was a leper until the day of his death. He dwelt in an isolated house, because he was a leper; for he was cut off from the house of the Lord. Then Jotham his son was over the king’s house, judging the people of the land.
The Sabbath year was also a replication of life in the Garden of Eden
Adam was not to toil for his livelihood, but just rest in the Lord and worship Him
The weekly Sabbath and the Sabbath year were both pictures of the Spiritual rest that the people of God were to enjoy in the finished work of Christ on the cross.
It is also a picture of the rest that the children of God will enjoy in the age to come
It is also a picture of the rest that the children of God will enjoy in the age to come
You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.
Trust in the Lord forever,
For in Yah, the Lord, is everlasting strength.

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Philippians 1:21
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
