This is a present reality of every believer
Every believer loves God - ; ; ;
An unsaved person is incapable of loving God, nor does he possess the capacity to love God because He does not possess the Holy Spirit -
The unsaved person has a natural disposition against God and the things of God -
Although all believers have a love for God, all believers must grow in their love for God
Our love for God is to be wholehearted - ;
Wholehearted love for God is demonstrated by love that is:

Genuine - ;
Obedient - ,
because he first loved us
“Loved” is an aorist tense, denoting that which took place in the past
There has never been a point when God did not love us
The love expressed by John is most likely that which was evidenced on the cross
If God had not initiated love, mankind would be incapable of loving God
A believer’s love for God is based upon God’s love for him
Before any others, God loved us -
God demonstrated this love by sending His Son to die on the cross to pay for the sins of the world -
God’s love for us has been a theme of 1 John - ; ;
God’s love for mankind is not merely a truth to warm our hearts; it is a reality to alter our life
Reflecting upon the love God has for us should naturally prompt a heart of praise and a life of devotion
Individuals unmoved by God’s love do not understand its implications

God loves because it is His nature
God’s love is not self-serving
Were it not for God’s decision to love, mankind would be incapable of loving God or even man in a God-honoring way
The lives of believers have been greatly changed because of God’s love
If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

A profession is only validated by one’s actions
Ones’s action have the potential to validate or invalidate one’s claim
A mere claim is easy to make, for it costs nothing
Anybody can verbally claim “I love God”; however, only those who validate their claim by their life truly do
As this verse will clearly establish, love for God is inseparably linked with love for man
and hateth his brother
hateth indicates continuous action for which there is no remorse
hateth - to have a strong aversion tp; detest; dislike intensely
his brother is placed in an emphatic position
The individual who claims to love God is guilty of intensely disliking someone whom God loves
he is a liar
liar is placed in an emphatic location
This person is a liar
Therefore, the claim he is attempting to make is a false claim
We do well to ponder the strong language John uses in order to capture God’s mindset
One cannot love God and at the same time hate a fellow believer
Those who are not right in their relationship with fellow believers cannot be right with God
Hatred is characteristic of the unsaved - ;
Therefore, one cannot be right with God and hate a fellow believer at the same time

Our tendency is to harbor and even attempt to justify wrong feelings towards fellow believers
Such a mindset is deceptive

A person who is not in a right relationship with others cannot be in a right relationship with God
