The Promise of Kings

Deuteronomy 17:14–15 ESV

14 “When you come to the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you possess it and dwell in it and then say, ‘I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me,’ 15 you may indeed set a king over you whom the Lord your God will choose. One from among your brothers you shall set as king over you. You may not put a foreigner over you, who is not your brother.

Frustration and despair was the reason that Israel asked for a king

Frustration that Samuel’s sons were evil and unjust judges

Despair because of the military loses to the Philistines

Kings of the Unified Kingdom:

Saul

Member of the smallest tribe of Israel Benjamin. Was head and shoulders above the rest.

Born in the small town of Gibeah

Reigned around 1050-1010 BC

Fighting the Philistines and Amalekites was what he was know for.

Lost his kingdom because of disobedience 1 Sam. 15.24-29

David

Son of Jesse member of Judah tribe from the town of Bethlehem

in the line of Tamar, Rahab, and Ruth

Youngest son of Jesse

Giant killer and vicious warrior who’s reputation brought about great praise and fear 1 Samuel 18, 2 Samuel 17

David Sinned with Bathsheba and never recovered.

David was a good king but a bad dad his home was at war with one another because their father did not lead them to the Lord.

Solomon

Son of David and Bathsheba

Had to fight off his brother Adonijah for the Throne 1 Kings 1

Solomon Becomes king of Isreal 1 Kings 1-2

God Offers Solomon anything and Solomon asks for wisdom and gets everything 1Kings 3

Solomon allowed the riches and power to corrupt him and he made sinful choices and brought idolatry into the land through his marriages.

Solomon in the twilight of his life realized the real goal of man was to fear and obey God Eccl. 12.13-14
