cared about himself as opposed to the people and
pleasing God. He was very prideful as we will uncover
in this sermon.
He had trouble controlling his passion of women, he
had a large harem. He had trouble with drinking, he
had trouble with his temper, and he had trouble with
his arrogance.

Member of a Famous Dynasty
Mordecai The Defender of he Je s

His D nas

Cyrus, the first king of this dynasty, was mentioned
by name in prophecy by Isaiah (Isaiah : , : ,
a century or so before Cyrus was even born. Isaiah
prophesied about “Cyrus … saying to Jerusalem,
Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy
foundation shall be laid” (Isaiah : . Jeremiah also
prophesied of this work of Cyrus regarding the return
of the Jews from captivity to Jerusalem though,
unlike Isaiah, he did not mention Cyrus by name
(Jeremiah : ; : ; cp. Chronicles : , ;
Ezra : – . Darius I, the father of Ahasuerus, was the
man of this dynasty who led the Persian armies that
conquered Babylon the night Belshazzar held the
profane banquet (Daniel . As a result of conquering
Babylon, Darius I became acquainted with godly
Daniel. He appointed Daniel to high office in the
government and was involved in Daniel’s stay in the
lions’ den (Daniel . Ahasuerus was the third king of
this dynasty to be very involved with the Jews as we
will see in our study of the life of Mordecai. And
Artaxerxes I, the son of Ahasuerus, was another
member of this famous dynasty who was very
involved with the Jews. Artaxerxes I was the king of

Persia who had Nehemiah as his cupbearer and who
appointed Nehemiah governor of Judah and gave
him the authority to go to Jerusalem to rebuild the
walls of Jerusalem. So Mordecai’s involvement with
Ahasuerus was an involvement with a very famous
and powerful dynasty which had much to do with the
preservation of the Jews.

I would suggest that what he did here was wrong, he
had the wrong motives for asking her to come before
them. Drunkenness led to this.
Many today think drinking is okay, even inside the
church it is considered my many to be acceptable. I
personally am a sworn enemy of the devil and I will
oppose alcohol till the day I die. I often times am
around it but I go out of my way to ensure others
know I don’t partake of it and don’s participate in
drinking. I am against all forms of drinking.
Not everyone who takes one drink of alcohol will turn
into an alcoholic but if you survey every alcoholic this
morning they all began with one drink.

Reason for the Queen to come Esther

To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the

The King was so morally corrupt he had no respect
for women, not even his own wife
He only wanted her to come was because of her
beauty and so that the others could be envious of
him and what he had. In all transparency he wanted

to show off his prize and make them lustful of her.
Jewish scholars believed that the Queen was to come
nude, the Pulpit commentary suggests that she was
to come clothes but to unveil herself to the drunken
men.
Here he is drunk and not even thinking how his wife
would feel about this, that was totally ignored.
Alcohol will put you in a state where you don’t think
about the feelings of others but rather only care
about how you feel and what you want.
Many wives or women are abused today by men that
have an addiction to alcohol. Hollywood sells alcohol
as fun and sex as pleasure to be fulfilled at all costs
and Hollywood is wrong. The only way you can be
satisfied is being fully surrendered and fully
submitted to Jesus.

This was likely very embarrassing for him, after
all he was the King and everyone was supposed
to obey him. And when his very own wife did not
obey him, uh oh.
He could have had her put to death, but I believe
he cared too much for her to have that done.
He sought council with his wise men on what he

should do and how he should handle this.

The princes also resented her not coming as they
feared that if their wives and women seen the
Queen disobey the King their ladies might do the
same.

all the king’s provinces, into every province according
to the writing thereof, and to every people after their
language, that every man should bear rule in his own
house, and that it should be published according to
the language of every people.
Interesting that the wise men chose his side and
none of them said sir, you were drunk and you
should not have put her in that position. No one
would oppose the King and call him out for the
wrong which he did.
No matter how you call it out, the King was wrong
and did his wife wrong. IT was Queen Vashti’s
conduct that commendable in this situation, not
the King.
This was a bunch of yes me, in my opinion no
leader should just surround himself with yes men.
Don’t be afraid to be opposed as a leader, at times
we need to be challenged.
Of course this pleased the King, they were saying
the Queen was wrong and not him.
Don’t get me wrong, I HATE being wrong but
sometimes the Lord uses others including my
wife and my children to call my hand on things
which in turn makes me a better man and draws
me closer to the Lord
Where is the Godly council in this situation, was
none of these men on God’s side? A Godly leader
will surround himself with other leaders and
especially Godly leaders which will help him to be
the Leader that God wants him to be.

I personally believe that the Queen was most
likely happier after this happened than she was
before, we don’t have anything supporting this
but I know if I was in her shoes in this situation I
would be. The money, the wealth, the things, the
palace, none of these things can make someone
happy.

After these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus
was appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she
had done, and what was decreed against her. Then
said the king’s servants that ministered unto him, Let
there be fair young virgins sought for the king: And
let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his

kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair
young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house
of the women, unto the custody of Hege the king’s
chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their
things for purification be given them: And let the
maiden which pleaseth the king be queen instead of
Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.
Scholars suggest that it could have been as long as
three years from the time Vashti was removed until a
replacement is to be chosen. Take Esther : and
compare it to Esther : - and that is what
indicates the timeline.
When it says he remembered Vashti, I wonder what
he remembered, was it her beauty, was it traits, was
it her refusing to bow to his wicked request.
Sometimes God allows us to remember...
He is going to be selecting the new Queen from the
fair (beautiful) virgins of the land. I am a firm believer
in promoting that our youth and young adults save
themselves for marriage. Sex outside of the marriage
of a man and woman no matter what form it is, is
wrong. Sex is only permitted inside the bonds of Holy
matrimony with a man his woman or for the woman
and her man.
The selected virgins are to be set aside for physical
purification, these religion rulers didn’t care about
spiritual purity. To be candid spiritual purity is more
important that physical purification. God sent a
woman into my wife that was pure and I was pure
and the Lord has blessed our marriage. It has been a
bed of roses, the blossoms for me and thorns for her.
This made the King very happy, remember he is a
immoral and ungodly man, he is only going to
considering the outward appearance, but the Lord
looks on the inward and that is what we should do

Some people are just like King Xerxes: they are
morally corrupt and they engage in one sexual
exploit after another. One-night stands matter little
to these persons because sexual pleasure is their only
pursuit. Others develop long-term relationships that
are sexual in nature but nothing more. However in all
cases of morally corrupt people, they either refuse to
make a permanent, monogamous, marital
commitment or else they make a commitment that
is easily broken or disregarded. In both cases they
reject God and His holy commandments that forbid
adultery and illicit sex and that demand marriage
between a man and a woman

All morally corrupt people have one serious flaw in
common: they either fail to realize; or simply do not
care, that sex is only one part of many that make up
the total relationship between man and woman. Men
and women experience unity and pleasure on many
levels and in many ways. Therefore attention must
be given to all areas of the relationship if it is to grow,
thrive, succeed, and stand the test of time. A healthy
relationship must be built upon …

In those days, while Mordecai sat in the king’s
gate,
While Esther is the one which was the Hands of
the Lord in this story, it was Mordecai that served
as the head in this story, he was deeply connected
to God and the Lord used that to use Esther to
save his people. Eight times in this book it is
called out that Mordecai is a Jew, he had kept it
secret for a while but he later revealed it. It is
important that as Christians we publicize that, do
not keep it secret.
Perhaps some of you have been holding back and
not sharing it. The time has came that you arise
and obtain boldness and share that you are a
believer. He was one of the ones carried away
captive, so he was not a stranger with hardship.
Gods people have always been familiar with
hardship. Others that had been carried away was
Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, Abendego.
There is one thing certain, God’s people may
suffer but he NEVER forgets them in their
suffering.

With all the negativity we have read about the
King one might wonder why Mordecai would
want his beloved which he raised to be around the
king let alone be queen. But I must believe that
God orchestrated this from and let Mordecai this
way.
Being Raised by Mordecai and still being so close
to him she would likely had strong character,
truth and integrity, righteousness and holiness,
kindness, gentleness, compassion, generosity,
and Faith would likely have been instilled in her in
a young age.
We need those character traits today amongst
our children, youth, and young adults.

Scholars suggest that there was hundreds of
virgins brought, which I would imagine to be
true given the fact that they were wanting to
be Queen.

After reading and studying this I want to question
why did Mordecai spoil this, and not allow it to
happen but that would not have been the right thing

intervening here, the Lord is sending a Godly woman
into the Kings wife. Many times a Good Godly
woman has done much for ungodly men.
There was a very wicked and evil man that grew up
only miles from here named Nathan Bedford Forrest
that God allowed him to have a Godly wife that
Loved the Lord and Prayed for him. In the end he
comes to know the Lord as his personal Lord and
Savior. He is also Repentant of his behavior and life.
If you have never read his story read it. Seems that
society only knows him for one thing he did wrong
and not the brilliant soldier he was and in the end
Believer he was.
Sitting at the Kings gate was not saying he was
loitering at the gate being lazy but this would be an
official position inside of the government.

that would give many reasons for men to be

cost the lives of thousands—and the friends and

When Mordecai discovered it he didnt sit on the
information, he took it to Esther so she could tell the
King the plot and spare his life. To which she ensured
that the King knew it was Mordecai that was the one
reporting this.
He did not go around telling everyone of the plot but
rather took it directly to Esther as she could tell the
king.

Haman’s attempt to exterminate the Jews is the
basic plot of the book of Esther. Guarding
ourselves against extreme prejudice and bitter
hatred is the lesson for us. Discriminating against
other people because of their race, color,
appearance, ability or beliefs is wrong. Just
because a person is different—whether
handicapped, physically deformed, less educated
or any other dissimilarity—is no reason for harsh
feelings or acts of discrimination. As followers of
the Lord Jesus Christ, we are not to open our
hearts to prejudice or bitter hatred. When people
do wrong and commit atrocities, we are to legally
execute justice and hold them accountable.

I have to wonder what caused this restlessness and
sleepless night
Was it something he ate or drunk
Was he curious about Esther’s doings?
Was the Lord dealing with him on a matter
Was there a country matter weighing on his mind
Was he thinking about the legislation he passed
to kill the Jews
I am leaning toward the last but we will not know
because it doesn’t say but we do know what
happened because he could not sleep helped alter

Also note, that it was the night before that the
wicked Haman came to the king to kill Mordecai the
next day by impaling him on the gallows.

read to him, he could have asked for music, or he
could have asked for a story to be told to him, could
have ask for anything but he asked for the royal

Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s chamberlains,
the keepers of the door, who sought to lay hand on
the king Ahasuerus.
It is interesting that of all the records that the servant
could have chosen he chose the one about Mordecai
saving the King’s life. I must believe that the Lord
was orchestrating this behind the scenes. Remember
this didn’t just recently happen, it had been years .
I don t believe in coincidence, I do believe in Divine
Providence, Remember, God has a Plan and a
Purpose for you. Never doubt that nor doubt him.

God can even direct what we read in a book. A
young man in North Africa sought peace, first in
sensual pleasures and then in philosophy, but only
became more miserable. One day he heard a
neighbor child playing a game and saying, “Take it
and read! Take it and read!” The young man
immediately picked up the Scriptures and
“happened” to open to Romans : – ; and those
verses brought him to faith in Christ. We know that
young man today as Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, and
author of numerous Christian classics.
The king’s servant picked out the very book that
told about Mordecai’s good deed and read that
section to Ahasuerus. How marvelous is the
providence of God!

overseeing Esther’s estate, serving as manager or

He along with Esther saved the Jews from

He instituted the Festival of Purim as a
permanent festival, one that celebrated the
wonderful deliverance of the Jews from their
enemies ( :20–32).
He had a strong testimony of good works,
of working for the benefit of people and of
speaking up for their welfare (10:3).

Resting
“they rested”
After our Spiritual Battles we should find a time of
resting
We should be sure to take time off, it is a good thing
to work but we need time to rest.
Every night I try to make my way to bed at 9pm and
be asleep before 10pm as I wake up at 4am. This
ensures I get 6 hours of sleep then on Saturdays I try
to still be asleep by the same time but sleep in till
