THEME FOR THE YEAR HAS BEEN ROOTED & GROUNDED
When we have been taken out of our routine, and our lives have been totally and universally disrupted — our foundations, or our roots, are tested.
What have you been founding your life on?
Colossians 2:6–7 KJV 1900
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
Colossians 2:6–10 KJV 1900
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
Colossians 2:6–15 KJV 1900
6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: 7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. 8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: 11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: 12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
PRAYER
God wants us to be stable, established, in our faith. And to shore ourselves up this morning,
NOTICE THREE ASPECTS OF THIS PASSAGE:

Consistent Walk (6-7)

Colossians 2:6–7 KJV 1900
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
FOUR CHARACTERISTICS OF OUR CHRISTIAN WALK IN THESE VERSES:

A Faith Walk

“as ye have therefore received Christ”
“Received” = accept Christ Jesus, i.e. the proclamation of him as Lord
“Walk” = to conduct one’s life. Calls for a continual and habitual action
How are we to walk in Christ? As we received Him. How did we receive Him? In faith.
Ephesians 2:8–9 KJV 1900
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
1 Peter 1:5 KJV 1900
Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Romans 1:16–17 KJV 1900
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
Have you received Christ by faith?
Not by baptism
Not by catechism
Not by humanism
Not by conservatism
Not by conformism
Not by
Your family cannot save you
Your church cannot save you
You pastor cannot save you
You money cannot save you
Your intellect cannot save you
Your reputation cannot save you
ONLY THE GRACE OF GOD CAN SAVE YOU!! RECEIVE IT IN FAITH!
Come to the point where you cry out like the Philippian jailer:

30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Acts 16:30–31 KJV 1900
And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

A Founded Walk

Rooted and built up in him

“Rooted and built up in him”
“Rooted” = ‘cause to take root’, mostly fig., ‘put on a firm foundation, fix firmly’
‘cause to take root’, mostly fig., ‘put on a firm foundation, fix firmly’
“Built Up” = to engage in a building process of personal and corporate development, edify, build up/on, built upon him
(A Faith Walk)
1 Corinthians 3:8–15 KJV 1900
Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
(A Faith Walk)
be confirmed in faith
Statement — We are a building, under continual construction, founded on Christ. How deep is your foundation? How stable is your building? How far has your construction progressed?
(A Faith Walk)
Ephesians 2:19–22 KJV 1900
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

A Fundamental Walk

and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught

“and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught”
“Stablished” = be established, confirmed in faith
“Taught” = instructed, taught
Jude 3 KJV 1900
Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
A pastor is required to:  — [Hold] fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
1 Timothy 4:16 KJV 1900
Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
 — Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
Matthew 22:29 KJV 1900
Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
Matt 22
How valuable is the teaching and preaching of God’s Word to you? How established are you in the fundamental teachings of God’s Word?
2 Timothy 2:15 KJV 1900
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
1 Timothy 2:15 KJV 1900
Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
1 Peter 3:15 KJV 1900
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

A Flourishing Walk

“abounding therein with thanksgiving”
“Abounding” = be outstanding, be prominent, excel
“Abounding” = be outstanding, be prominent, excel
Thanksgiving” = the expression or content of gratitude, the rendering of thanks, thanksgiving, overflow with thanksgiving
Is your Christian walk outstanding? Are you excelling in your relationship with Christ? Is your faith prominent? Are you a flourishing follower of Christ, or a floundering one?
John 15:5 KJV 1900
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Are you abounding in Christ? Does gratitude and thanksgiving flow from your life?
Do you have a Consistent Christian walk?
the expression or content of gratitude, the rendering of thanks, thanksgiving

ILLUSTRATION: A father and son arrived in a small western town looking for an uncle whom they had never seen. Suddenly, the father, pointing across the square to a man who was walking away from them, exclaimed, “There goes my uncle!” His son asked, “How do you know when you have not seen him before?” “Son, I know him because he walks exactly like my father.”
His son asked, “How do you know when you have not seen him before?”
“Son, I know him because he walks exactly like my father.”

Compelling Warning (8)

Colossians 2:8 KJV 1900
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

Beware of False Teaching

“spoil” = to gain control of by carrying off as booty, make captive of, rob (in imagery of carrying someone away fr. the truth into the slavery of error)
in imagery of carrying someone away fr. the truth into the slavery of error
“philosophy” = erroneous teaching — lit. “love of wisdom”
“vain deceit” = empty deceit
Quote — How is it possible for false teachers to capture people? The answer is simple: These “captives” are ignorant of the truths of the Word of God. They become fascinated by the philosophy and empty delusion of the false teachers. ... When a person does not know the doctrines of the Christian faith, he can easily be captured by false religions.
Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). The Bible exposition commentary (Vol. 2, p. 125). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.
Ephesians 4:11–15 KJV 1900
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
It is the teaching and preaching of the Word of God that keeps us stable in our faith.
Don’t be a wavering, weak-minded Christian! Don’t be gullible, don’t be easily impressed by schools and scholars! Get in the Bible! Soak up the living Word of God!
Matthew 7:15 KJV 1900
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Don’t get carried away or captivated by false teachings! Get in your Bible!

Beware of Futile Traditions

“tradition” = that which is handed down
Traditions in an of themselves are not evil. There are many traditions that are incredibly helpful. But tradition does not carry the weight of the Word of God, and all too often, religious traditions are lifted up higher than the truth itself.
For example, in Jesus’ day:
Mark 7:1–9 KJV 1900
Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault. For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
Are the traditions you cling to scripturally sound? Are they spiritually motivated? Tradition will not save you, it cannot sanctify you, only the Spirit of God can do that in your life.

Beware of Faulty Theology

“Rudiments of the World” — vocabulary of the religious astrology of the day
Even in Paul’s day, heresy and false doctrine were rampant. Gnosticism was a huge battle for the church in Colosse. It, among many other false doctrines, rejected the Deity of Christ.
Quote — “Christ is the yardstick by which to measure philosophy and all phases of human knowledge. The Gnostics were measuring Christ by their philosophy as many men are doing today. They have it backwards. Christ is the measure for all human knowledge since he is the Creator and the Sustainer of the universe.” — A.T. Robertson
ILLUSTRATION — “Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.”
In April of 2011, a line of deadly tornadoes ripped across the state of Alabama, leaving some 250 people dead in its wake. Near Wellington, Alabama, the Hardy family realized the storm was coming too late to find a permanent shelter. They considered trying to take shelter in a metal clubhouse, but it had already been turned on its side by the strong winds. So in desperation, they took shelter in a small stand of trees. They tied a rope around the children and huddled around them in the trees as the storm passed. A family member said that while they had been scratched by flying dirt and debris, none suffered any serious injuries.
Imagine how tightly you would cling to the trees and rope in such a situation. Knowing that your life or the life of your child might depend on your grip would give you all the motivation you needed to hang on with every ounce of power you could muster!
Although there are no warning sirens or news alerts, each of us is living in the path of destructive storms. There are temptations and destructive philosophies abounding around us, and if we do not have a secure place of protection, we will be destroyed.
Because the Word of God is so readily available to us, we often take it for granted rather than treasuring it as the precious resource it is. When you view the Bible as a lifeline designed to keep you safe through the storms of life, you begin to take it more seriously.
2 Thessalonians 2:15 KJV 1900
Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
