Introduction

Romans 1:17 - 18

17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

What is the Surprise?

Paul opened his heart to the Roman church list a number of things that marked a trues servant of Christ. He came to the thesis of the letter in verses 15 - 16 stating it is about the gospel of Jesus Christ. He called if the Gospel of God in verse 1 because God is the originator or source but in Christ the gospel is completed. In Christ the gospel is the culminated in Him. Paul was eager to preach the gospel to them at Rome. We saw that in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed. It is revealed in conversions and the conversions are based upon faith. One must believe the gospel to be saved. There is no other way to be saved than to believe the gospel. One must believe the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ is sufficient for their for their salvation. It is Christ and nothing else. We bring nothing to or contribute anything to our salvation. We simply believe and repent. It is by faith we are saved. It is faith that saves. God’s righteousness is revealed by your faith, and your faith, and your faith .... Look at verse 17, it says, “from faith to faith,” think of it this way faith, to faith, to faith, to faith, to faith, .... He concludes by quoting the Old Testament prophet Habakkuk, “The just shall live by faith.” The only way to justification is through faith.

How can we understand the righteousness of God?

Well, we cannot understand the righteousness of God without understanding the wrath of God. Wrath is a Divine attribute of God’s righteousness. They are perfectly balanced, in fact all of God’s attributes are perfectly balance that is what make him God. He is perfect in all his ways. There is no shadow of turning with God. He is perfect. So, his wrath is perfect. If God did not have wrath and anger toward sin he would not be God.

Hebrews 1:9

9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Psalm 2:1 - 5

1 Why do the heathen rage,

And the people imagine a vain thing?

2 The kings of the earth set themselves,

And the rulers take counsel together,

Against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,

3 Let us break their bands asunder,

And cast away their cords from us.

4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh:

The Lord shall have them in derision.

5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath,

And vex them in his sore displeasure.

What they are saying hear is let us do away with God and God wrath is revealed to all who would want to get rid of God.
The New Testament has many reference to God’s wrath as well.
One in particular stands out in relation to the gospel.
It removes us from the idea that we are somehow in this in-between place in this life of not being fully condemned and not fully justified but kinda in the middle.

John 3:36

36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

John 3 18

18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

How is God Wrath Revealed?

Have you ever wondered why the thing we desire the most bring us the most trouble?
We really want to do it but it also brings the a great conflict to our lives, to our being.
God has instilled in men to go out a slay the dragon so tot speak.
Men want to provide for their families, take care of them, and all that.
There is no greater calling for men than to do this.
But, why is it that the job brings so turmoil to our lives?
Why does our jobs bring so much struggle to life? Some embrace the struggle and as something to be conquered. Others see the struggle as a source of worry.
But whether one embraces it or worries about it has an effect upon our life and body.
Why is that?
Most girls want to grow up to be moms and have children and a family.
There is no greater calling for women than to do this.
Why is it that family brings women the most trouble in life?
Why is it that children can bring the most heartache to a mother but yet she would give her life for her children?
You have probably quest that it has something to do with God’s wrath and you would be right.
Let go back to where God’s grace, And God’s redemption of man, and God’s righteousness, and God’s wrath was first revealed.

Genesis 3

God’s grace revealed.

Genesis 3:9 Grace

9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

This is a wonderful statement of God’s grace. “Where art thou?”
It is not that God did not know where they were or what they had done.
He knew all of that but He says, “Where art thou?”
In this question God is seeking sinners.
God was seeking the first sinners and He is still seeking sinners today.
If you have never turned in faith and repentance, God is seeking you today.
This is a gospel call for you to t believe in Jesus’ payment for your sin and to turn away from sin.

Genesis 3:15 Redemption

15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

You see, God promise a redeemer would come through the seed of the woman and the one who would come would crush the head of sin but not without cost to him.
He would die.
He would take the full wrath of God for the sin of man.

Genesis 3:17 - 19 Man’s trouble

17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; 19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Because of the first man willful act of sin, men have trouble with their work
Do you have boss that is like thorn or a thistle?
Do you have to work hard?
Does work sometime seem difficult?

Genesis 3:16 Women’s trouble

16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

Why is child birth so hard and yet as soon as it is over the mother embraces to child that caused so much pain?
Why is your husband so like a husband but you love them anyway?
Why is teaching children so difficult?
Why are children not the same? That would make it easier to teach them. Once you figured out the first one then the rest would be easy. just repeat lessons learned.
But it does not happen that way.

Why is that?

The answer is the wrath of God is revealed and the troubles of life are a continual reminder that God hates sin everyday.

The struggles we have with our jobs, with our spouses, our children are a continual reminder that God does not, cannot tolerate sin.
We need the gospel everyday.
Salvation does not mean we are relieved from the struggles of life, but we are saved from the eternal punishment of rejecting Christ as our Savior.

Sinner, come to Christ today. There is no promise of tomorrow.

Turn in faith and repentance to Christ. Give your life to Christ before it is too late.
