7  Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

If you want mercy, be merciful
- You reap what you sow
According to , , , and , when we are merciful to others, God is merciful to us.

1  Blessed is he that considereth the poor:

The LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.

14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and glabour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and glabour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed towards his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
The word mercy here is also translated compassion.
The word compassion comes from 2 Greek words:
pati meaning “to suffer”
Com meaning “with” or “together”
The idea here is that we come along side others and suffer with them.
When we feel their pain, and we are able to do so, we help others in their suffering.
This is what Paul was talking about in .

16 The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: 17 But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me. 18 The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

While suffering in prison in Rome, Paul tells that Onesiphorus “refreshed” him.
Paul’s chains did not shame him away
Paul says that Onesiphorus put great effort into finding him.
Paul also tells that the church at Ephesus knew of all that Onesiphorus had done while Paul was in Rome.
Perhaps no one spoke in more detail about this topic than James.

13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. 24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. 25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Faith without works is dead
What good is seeing someone hungry and wishing them well but not offering them food?
What good is seeing someone who is lacking clothing and wishing them well but not offering them clothing?
These actions are useless.
The words are meaningless without actions to back them.
Abrahams actions demonstrated what was already in his heart.
Rahab acted according to that which was already in her heart.
“Mercy rejoices against judgment.”
