Introduction
Greetings…
The idea of mourning is again contrary to worldly wisdom.
As people we typically strive to move away and sometimes even run from any type of suffering or sadness that might come our way. We don’t like to even think about such things.
Our usual tendency is to gravitate toward things that make us happy and bring joy to us.
The worldly mind will wonder how anyone suffering could feel blessed.
How could anyone that is sad be happy?
Today we are going to examine that idea as we look at what Jesus said in .
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Before I go further, however, let me make clear not every form of mourning is under consideration in our text.
Paul spoke of the “worldly grief or sorrow” in which Jesus did not have in mind in our beatitude today.
Some people mourn the loss of material items while others mourn, they got caught sinning neither of which Jesus is considering in our text.
With all this in mind let’s examine our lesson today.
Blessed Are Those That Mourn
Blessed Are Those That Mourn
Poor In Spirit.
Poor In Spirit.
As we mentioned last week each of these beatitudes build on the next and thus “those that mourn” are connected to those that are “poor in spirit.”
Remember being poor in spirit means understanding that without Christ and all the spiritual blessings found in Christ we have not hope of inheriting the kingdom of heaven.
Those that understand this have the mentality to be “mourn” biblically.
So then what does it mean to have…
Biblical Mourning
Biblical Mourning
The Greek word for “mourn” is found nine other times in the New Testament.
Many of those times it is specifically connected to weeping.
10 She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept.
25 “Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry. “Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.
Lk
9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.
If you were to look at different lexicons you would find the word being describes as “to be sad, to grieve to the point of weeping.”
Keep this in mind as we continue in our study.
So what does biblical mourning mean?
Biblical mourning means we don’t just have knowledge of sin but understand the dangers and condition sin creates.
It is our sins that nailed Jesus to the cross.
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
It is our sins that separate us from our God, the only one that can save us from our sins.
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Therefore, biblical mourning is understanding the our part in Jesus’ death.
How many times have you wept because of your sin, like the publican of ?
Summary
Summary
The blessing that comes from mourning only happens if we understand the magnitude of “our sins” and the attitude we are to have of them.
If we are indifferent and/or have no emotional anguish because of our sins we cannot be blessed by God nor for that matter be truly repentant of our sin ().
With that said, for those that do “mourn over their sin...”
They Shall Be Comforted
They Shall Be Comforted
Godly Sorrow.
Godly Sorrow.
For those that biblically mourn or have “godly sorrow” they will repent as they should.
This isn’t simply giving lip service but true repentance.
10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.
Those that mourn their sin should be seeking “yoke that is easy” found in Christ (-32).
This means godly sorrow leads to…
Salvation Without Regret.
Salvation Without Regret.
When we turn from our sins through repentance () and confess those sins to our Father in heaven () we can know our sins are no more in the eyes of God.
12 For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.”
25 “I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.
Is 43:
It’s at this point we find comfort and happiness in our lives because we have submitted to God’s will and found our sins removed.
When we truly mourn our sin we find genuine comfort from our God who is “the God of all comfort.”
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,

Conclusion
Conclusion
T. DeWitt Talmage in his sermon on The Ministry of Tears talked about “why tears are so precious” to us here on earth.
Tears, because of sin, keep this world from becoming too attractive.
They make heaven that which is to be desired.
Tears, because of sin, make us feel our complete dependence on God.
Only God can save us.
Tears, because of sin, will enable us to remember others that are like we were.
Those outside of Christ must learn, by us, what we now know.
Only those that biblically mourn shall be blessed and comforted.
Invitation
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
