Luke 10:25–37 CSB

25 Then an expert in the law stood up to test him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the law?” he asked him. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,” and “your neighbor as yourself.” 28 “You’ve answered correctly,” he told him. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus took up the question and said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him up, and fled, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down that road. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 In the same way, a Levite, when he arrived at the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion. 34 He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him. When I come back I’ll reimburse you for whatever extra you spend.’ 36 “Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” 37 “The one who showed mercy to him,” he said. Then Jesus told him, “Go and do the same.”

Today the COVID-19 (coronavirus) virus has kept many people at home with no help.

Helping others saves!

They are wondering how I can buy food. How can I pick up my medicine? I’m all alone, no one to talk to.

Helping others pays the way!

In this time of need and fear of the unknown. Let’s take time to show our Love to others.

An expert of the law. One who studied the scriptures. A Bible scholar. The one people go to for answers. For he would spend his day praying and studying. Asked this question.

What must I do to inherit eternal life?

This man already knew what he must do to have eternal life, or did he? This man, the expert of the law, already new there must be a sacrifice for their sins to be forgiven. He already knew that no one was without sin. But did Jesus know this?

Jesus answered with a question, you know the law, what does it say? Having studied the law, memorizing scripture, how do you read it?

V27 Love the Lord with all your heart. Love your neighbor.

Prayer

My purpose today is to show how to love your neighbor.

First things first. This Bible scholar wanted to know who his neighbor is? Didn’t he know? Jesus knew who His neighbor is. So why would this expert of the law want to know an answer he should already know? He was looking for Jesus to tell him that the Jews were his neighbor.

This question opened the door so Jesus could tell them who their neighbor is.

We know who our neighbor is, don’t we? They live next door, or just around the corner. This is what most people today think. But Jesus had a different answer.

I was walking down the road to the next town. I had just gotten off work. This was payday, so I had a pocket full of money. Before leaving town, I had stopped to buy my wife and kids something. Since he had been away for quite some time. My arms were full of goods, I had a money clip full of money.

I was on my way. As I was walking, a long way down the road I came across someone in need, so I thought.

Come to find out he was a robber that had been terrorizing the travelers.

Along comes a priest. He yelled out, thinking this man would help, but no he would not help. Along comes a schoolteacher, thinking that he might help. He yelled to this man, but to no avail, he would not help either.

This robber had a bunch of friends, that were waiting behind the bushes and rocks along the side of the road. They hit me, they beat me, took everything I had. Including the gift for my wife and kids.

Now I was laying half dead along side of the road, no one around to help me.

Along comes a priest. I yelled out, thinking this man would help, but no, he would not help.

As he was laying there, about to give up hope. Along comes his rival enemy. Thinking that this would not do any good, he would call for him anyway. HELP! He yelled, as he struggled to breath. Two people had already come by and refused to help. Now here is the last person I want to see. Thinking to himself, go away I don’t want your help. But calling out loud saying, please help me.

Along comes a schoolteacher, thinking that he might help. I yelled to the teacher, but to no avail, he would not me help either.

As I was laying there, about to give up hope. Along comes my rival enemy. Thinking that this would not do any good, I would call for him anyway.

This man seeing another in need, not caring who he was, stopped to help. Seeing the needs, started to clean the wounds. After cleaning him up, he had given him something for the pain and swelling. Bandaging up all his wounds, so they would not get infected. The enemy loaded him up on his own donkey. Walking the rest of the way to town, took him to an inn taking care of him. The next day he took out some money and paid the innkeeper two days’ worth of expenses. Telling the inn keeper to take care of this man and when I return, I will pay whatever I owe.

HELP! I yelled, struggling to breath. Two people had already come by and refused to help. Now here is the last person I want to see. Thinking to myself, go away I don’t want your help. But calling out loud saying, please help me.

Helping others is what neighbors do. When your neighbor is in need we go and help.

Your asking yourself right now, how does this save?

For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift not from works, so that no one can boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.

How can we help others today? We are stuck at home. Grocery stores are out of everything. How can I help?

We were created for good works. God prepared the work we are to do.

Kindness to the poor is a loan to the Lord, and he will give a reward to the lender.

1. We can pray for all our neighbors.

2. We can call our neighbors.

3. We can serve our neighbors.

4. We can share life with them.

Share the Gospel of Christ with them.

You love your neighbor by not asking for payment.

Make it a free gift.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
