HOOK
HOOK
Yesterday we learned that John admitted that he was not the Messiah, he was a “voice” for the Word and his purpose was to baptize with water.
Why does John came baptizing with water?
That’s what we’re going to look into this morning

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”

' Juan 1:29-34

THE LAMB OF GOD WHO TAKES AWAY THE SIN OF THE WORLD
An allusion to the symbolism of the Passover lamb
3 Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household.
I MYSELF DID NOT KNOW HIM
This is an interesting statement of John— Why would he say that he himself did not know Jesus when their mothers are relatives?
THE REASON I CAME BAPTIZING WITH WATER WAS THAT HE MIGHT BE REVEALED TO ISRAEL
The Purpose of John’s ministry was preparing the way for the coming of the Messiah
John tends to us “Israel” as a positive label for God’s chosen people— not because of their ancestry— but by their belief
THE MAN ON WHOM YOU SEE THE SPIRIT COME DOWN AND REMAIN IS THE ONE WHO WILL BAPTIZE WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
This answers our question earlier— John most likely knew who Jesus was— because their mothers are related— that makes them relatives too— I believe that John said, “I myself did not know him” mean that he knew Jesus but he did know that he was the Messiah [Chosen One] until it was revealed to him by God by the descending of the Holy Spirit on Jesus in form of a dove
“The One who will baptize with the Holy Sprit— take note of this on your journal and I will discuss that subject matter when we come to that stare of our study
I HAVE SEEN AND TESTIFIED THAT THIS IS GOD’S CHOSEN ONE
John the Baptist is functioning as a formal legal witness to Jesus identity
The first Gospel— Matthew— believed was written by Apostle Matthew himself— confirmed this in
17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
