Who is John? What was His Purpose?

Welcome back to the verse by verse study of the Gospel of John

This part of the Gospel of John, the writer clarifies who John is— that he is not the Messiah

That Jesus is the Word [Logos]— and John was the voice

That he baptize those who believe with water— i’ll tell you more about baptism later

John 1:19–28 NIV

19 Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.” 21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” 22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’ ” 24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 “I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

'Ang mga pinuno ng mga Judio sa Jerusalem ay nagsugo ng ilang paring Judio at Levita upang itanong kay Juan kung sino nga ba siya. Hindi nagkaila si Juan; sa halip ay maliwanag niyang sinabi, “Hindi ako ang Cristo.” “Sino ka kung gayon?” tanong nila. “Ikaw ba si Elias?” “Hindi ako si Elias,” tugon niya. “Ikaw ba ang Propeta?” Sumagot siya, “Hindi rin.” “Sino ka kung gayon? Sabihin mo kung sino ka upang may masabi naman kami sa mga nagsugo sa amin. Ano ang masasabi mo tungkol sa iyong sarili?” tanong nilang muli. Sumagot si Juan sa pamamagitan ng pangungusap mula sa aklat ni Propeta Isaias, “Ako ang tinig ng isang taong sumisigaw sa ilang, ‘Tuwirin ninyo ang daraanan ng Panginoon.’” Ang mga nagtanong ay sugo ng mga Pariseo. Muli nilang tinanong si Juan, “Bakit ka nagbabautismo, gayong hindi naman pala ikaw ang Cristo, o si Elias, o ang Propeta?” Sumagot si Juan, “Ako'y nagbabautismo sa tubig, ngunit nasa inyong kalagitnaan ang isang hindi ninyo nakikilala. Darating siyang kasunod ko subalit hindi man lamang ako karapat-dapat na magkalag ng sintas ng kanyang sandalyas.” Ang mga ito'y nangyari sa Bethania, sa silangan ng Ilog Jordan na pinagbabautismuhan ni Juan. Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask John who he was

Very clearly, John confessed that he was not the Messiah— neither he is Elijah, nor a prophet

I AM THE VOICE

The Word needs a voice

John identified himself by quoting

Isaiah 40:3 NIV

3 A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

The significance of the voice was not to be found in the speaker but in its message

There is a call for preparation

The analogy of used was an edict [a decree] to prepared the road because the king is coming— to accommodate the return of the people from exile in Babylon who was waiting for the Messiah

I BAPTIZE WITH WATER

The Pharisees asked John— why then do you baptize if you are not Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?

John replied, I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know— the one who comes after me— this was also confirmed by Luke in gospel

Luke 3:16 NIV

16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
