Good morning! Thank you all for being willing to try out this new format as we seek to still be the church outside of these four walls. This morning, we’re gonna look at a passage of scripture and where it is that Jesus is leading those of us who follow him, and what I hope is that once you see this, when you read the gospels you’ll be able to see it everywhere, because Jesus didn’t say follow me so you can be a better person, follow me so you can get to heaven, follow me so you can have a pain free problem free life. He said follow bec. I want to do something extraordinary, and we struggle with this. So here’s what we’re gonna do. We’re gonna look at kind of an obscure conversation that Jesus has with some of his disciples and we’re gonna discover the the payoff, we discover the place where our heavenly father is going to lead us as we follow Jesus or if you choose to follow Jesus. Before I read it let me set it up This is at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry and there were three groups of people that followed him at the beginning. The first group of people were those that lived in the town where he showed up. The second group were a group of people that jsut went everywhere with him. Not part of the 12 but a group of people who just followed him. Then tehre was his inner circle, the apostles, and one day Jesus sat down and gathered his followers together and then chose 12 people who he called his disciples, his inner circle. SO in matthew ch. 10, Matthew who was one of these people talks about when Jesus picked these 12 guys we know as his apostles. Then after he picks them, he sits them down and says now that you’re part of this inner circle, I’m gonna send you out with the same message that I have, I’m going to empower you to do some of the same things that I’m doing, here’s where to go, here’s how long you should stay, here’s how much money to take, heres what to where, here’s what to do … he gives all of these instructions, and Matthew’s writting down, Peter’s writing it down, there’ tryign to remember it, then he surprises them with what I’m bout to read to you. And in this little section in the book of Matthew, we discover the finish line, the place where our heavenly father wants to take us. Now. Here’s the good new, what he says to them will most likely not happen to you, inless you find yourself in some wild situations one day, so don’t let this scare you off. We’re listening in to a conversation that Jesus has with his Apostles or disciples, his closest follower. So, Matthew chapter 10 starting with verse 16 I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. Whoa, sounds like some kind of conflict may arise. But he goes on Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues. Flogged in the Synagogues. Now, immediately Matthew stops writing, and they all kind of look at one another. Okay, WHAT. He says yea, you’re gonna be arrested. And THis is so interestign bec, Jesus peers into their future. M M L J is about Jesus, but when you get to the book of ACts, it’s about these gusy, and sure enough, all of this happnes to them. But they’re not expecting that. Right now they’re very popular. Every where Jesus goes thousands of people follow him, and they’re close to Jesus so they’re pretty popular, but Jesus is like No, that’s gonna change, You’re gonna be arrested and youre gonna be flogged in the synagogue, and this is a big deal. When you got flogged you had a permenant mark, and now everyone would know what happened. So they’re hearing this, and he continues: 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. Now check this out 19 But when they arrest you, not if, they’re probably feeling a little nervous, When you’re arrested, wait wait wait, what are you talking about Jesus. Arent we a part of a movement, like you’re pretty popular, what do you mean when you’re arrested? do not worry about what to say or how to say it. Now, I don’t know what they were thinking, but I know what I’d be thinking: I won’t be worred about what to say or how to say it. That’s the last thing I’m worried about. I’m more worried about that little part that says When they arrest you. What are you getting at Jesus? Why am I getting arrested? At that time you will be given what to say, They gotta be thinking at this time, we don’t want to be given what to say, we want to be given a get out of jail card. Jesus you didn’t tell us about this part. We were excited about being on the inner circle but now theres this? Then he says 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. They’ve gotta be thinking okay hold up, we’re getting arrested, we’re getting beated, we’re being put on trial, and then while we’re on trial, God is going to be invovled? Yeah. God, my heavenly father is going to be so involved that he’s going to give me the words to say? Yeah. Okay, then, if God knows all of this, why doesnt he justget me unarrested, or better, why doesnt he keep this from happening in the first place? I see what you’re getting at, you want me to have confidence that God is with me and everythign will be okay, but this isn’t exactly how I want God to be involved in all of this. And he goes on:21 “Brother will betray brother, remember this all happens, brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; people were turned into the authorities by their own family members in the future if they followed Jesus, children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death for following Jesus. 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me, And they’ve gotta be thinking: Ok, no one told us this part. I mean right now everyone loves us because of you. They’re doing everything to get to us and to get to you, they love us Jesus. ANd Jesus is like yeah well hang on because you’re about to be hated because of me. And then he gets to the end and he brings us to that stragne place that we wants us to be in, that tension that we’ve wrestled with if you beleive in God or any kind of God he says 10:28, Do not be afraid … repeat,
Intro/Recap
Intro/Recap
Wait… but we;re gonna be arrested, do not be afraid, we’re gonna be beated and flogged, but do not be afraid, inthe midst of all of it, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul, rather be afraid of the one who can destroy both the soul and body in hell. And Jesus introduces to them, and to us, something he goes back to over and over again, and here the good news, these guys didn’t get this until the end. The whol idea of being able to find themselves in difficult circumstances and yet refuse to alow fear to tak hold, he continues, Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? In other words, aren’t sparrows almost worthless? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; , but jesus you just, I know, but you just said, I know, I know, but in spite of that, in the midst of that, do not be afraid, you are worth more than many sparrows. Here is where Jesus takes his followers. He takes us to a place where our faith in God is so big, and so strong, he takes us to a place where we’re personally so secure in our father’s love, that even in the midst of circumstances where it seems like God has forgotten us or it seems like maybe he never even knew us to begin with, we hear him whisper “fear not I’m with you.”See, the message of Jesus wasn’t Don’t be afraid, I won’t let bad things happen. Thats magic. The message of Jesus was Don’t be afraid when bad things happen. That’s confidence in God. A confidence that is so big, so sure og God’s love and protection that it overhwems and overshahdows our fear. The palce God wants to take us is to that place where we wake up everyday and think “what would I do If i was so confident that God was with me?” What decision would I make as I face peer pressure, what decision would I make as I face friendship or relationships, what decision would I make in light of what people are saying about me, what decision would I make as I face my parents, what would someone as me do if I was absolutely confident in the God who can protect the soul in spite of what someone or something might do to this body what would I do if I was absolutely confident that God was with me. ANd Jesus says I want you to follow me because that’s where I’m going to take you. I’m not taking you to a place of denial, I’m not taking you to a place of magic, or a formula, or a scheme, I wanna take you to a place where your faith in me and your faith in your heavenly father is so confident that even in the midst of circumstances that should terrify you, you will not be AFRAID. Over and over again we see this.
Good mor We’re gonna look at a passage of scripture and discover it together, but what I hope is that once you see this, when you read the gospels you’ll be able to see it everywhere, because Jesus was so consistent. He didn;t say follow me so you can be a better person, follow me so you can get to heaven, follow me so you can have a pain free problem free life. He said follow bec. I want to do something extraordinary, and we struggle with this. So here’s what we’re gonna do. Over and over again we see this.
NIV30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

But Jesus we need to eat, I know that! I’m Jesus, but I want to take you to a place where when you have confidence in God you wont be controlled by the fear of what youll eat or drink or what youll wear. People that dont have faith run after these things. your heavenly father knows that you need them. So even when theres not enough food, you dont need to be afraid. You dont need to be afraid because your confidence is not in the one who can destroy the body but not the soul, your confidence is in the one who knows your name and can shield your soul. Your confidence in God is so big that even in circumstances where everyone else is afraid, you do not need to fear.

Your confidence in God is so big that even in circumstances where everyone else is afraid, you do not need to fear. That is where following Jesus ultimately leads. story of the storm and Jesus is asleep. Jesus we were going to drown, in the greek they literally say we were perishing to death, and we have our own version of this, we says “Jesus don’t you care?” And how does Jesus respond? Why are you so afraid? hmmm, Jesus there was a storm and you were asleep, you werent there. we were throwin water outside of the boat, and it was filling up, and you werent here. No, I know there was a storm, I know the boat was filling up wiht water, I know you couldnt have gotten out of this, my qquestions is why were you afraid? Do you still have no faith?? Do you still not belive that I care about you? Why your lack of faith. Then after he calmed the storm the text says that the Apostle were terrifed. Their fear of the storm was big, but now their fear of Jesus was huge. Literally they feared a great fear. Suddenly that got a picture of what it means to fear the one who could congrol the destiny of the soul not what could hurt the body. Now they knew to fear not because their hevenly father knows what they need. knows what we need. and Jesus says yes, That’s where I’m trying to take you. But why this? Why not make us a better person? Why not just make it to where good things happen to follow Jesus. Why tie it to I want you to trust that God knows your name and that God loves you in spite of all that you see. Why is this the end goal? This kind of faith honors God. We honor God with out big bold faith. This kind of faith frees us to love other people. This is the only knid of faith that frees us to love those people we jsut don’t really want to love. Remember when jesus said love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you? And everyone’s like okay, i don’t really even pray for my friend, what, pray for those who persecute you, pray for my enemies, that’s crazy Jesus. Who does this? The people who persecute us have power over us, and youre telling us to love them. yeah. If your faith in God gets to the place where you honor and fear the one who can destroy the soul rather than hurt the body than your love for God will create perameters so broad that youll love the people who hate you. Because here’s what John said: There is no fear in love, when you get rid of fear, when the fear of people who can hurt you in this life jsut goes away, then all of a sudden your capacity for love opens up so broad, but perfect love drives out fear… Fear and love are incompatibel and Jesus says I’ve come to love the whole world and I want my followers to love the whole world and the only way to love the whole world is to get ride of fear of man and fear of the people and things that can hurt you in this life so I’m gonna tech you not to be afraid even though there’s so much to be afraid of so now follow me. Follow me. This is where Jesus wants to take us. Perhaps no one knew this better than the Apostle Paul. Now, Paul wasn’t one of the orignal Apostles, but Jesus came into his life in a wild way and changed him, then he started hanging out with peter and matthew and the other guys, so most of what he learned about Jesus was because of them. And then, as he’s traveling around and preaching and planting churches, he gets arrested multiple times, is almost stoned to death, and goes through things that you and I will never go through and he writes in his letter to the churches in Rome: And we know, wait don’t you mean you hope? no, don’t you mean you believe, no I know, that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Imagine living life with this kind of confidence. The apostle Paul, who experienced things we’ll never experience says it’s possilbe. THere is a faith thats this big, there is a faith thats this broad , a faith in God that overwhelms all fear, andthat is where Jesus wants to take us. He goes on a few verses later and says “Who shall separate us form the love of Christ? What could possibly make me dobt Jesus love for me? trouble? or Hardship or famine? or nakedness, or danger, or sword? Then I added a few: betrayal by friends, unmet expectations, overbearing parents, uncertain futures? Some of you are scared to death because of all of the things that are going on in your lives right now. Seniors, you’re getting ready to leave, and there’s a lot of uncertainty about that. 8th graders you’ll be in highschool nect year. Juniors, you’ll be seniors next year, and all of you, all of us have things coming up, or things that have happened and we’re terrified and we’re a mess over these things, and our savior says really?? Fear not. But jesus, do you know what’s going on? Do you even care? Of course I know! I’m Jesus I’m God, Fear not. And I know what some of you are thinking : wsih I could believe theres a faith that’s big enough to cover all my fears, but I’m not there yet, hey, me neither. But Jesus doesnt say okay heres the forumula go apply it and you’re done, no this is why he invites us to follow. Because regardless of what you believe and regardless of how well you’ve behaved or misbehaved, in following Jesus, your savior, your faith in your heavenly father begins to grow, expand, and it begins to overlap with circumstances and it gets broader and bigger than things that you never thought you could manage and in the midst of all of this Jesus says I want you follow me because I am with you. And here’s the good news, even his closest disciples didn’t get this until the very end. Over and over and over he would test them and he’s say do you still not believe and they’d be like we’re tyring but it’s hard. It’s hard to be in a sinking ship and fear not. And jesus is still like but why are you so afraid, because we still don’t have our confidence locked in on the one that can control the destiny of the soul, we’re locked in on the things that can hurt the body. And Jesus well then follow me, because one day you’ll get to the place where you can say with paul that all things work together for those who love their heavenly father and are called according to his purpose. So in the midst of stuff as we follow, Jesus says do not be afraid I am with you. “I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world you’re gonna have trouble but take heart because I have over come the world, and ifyou follow me I will lead you to that place where you faith overcomes and overshadows all your fears And that’s where I want to take you. Let me pray
