Introduction: As we dive into this sermon, we see Jesus is traveling with the disciples in a Paganistic world. They were in Caesarea Philippi, a place further up north from Galilee. They were mainly Non-Jewish and it was the perfect place for Jesus to ask the question “ Who do you say that i am?” For this we are going to study this text and show you these three K/W REASONS who Jesus is and why.
Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, bElijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.”

I. The Son of man is the Christ.

Matthew 16:
When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15) He *said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
A. Exposition:
A. Exposition:
Who do you say that i am? Why was he asking them this here and know?
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are athe Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Why were the people that even followed him didn't see who Christ really is?
B. Application:
Who do you say that he is to you? Do you know Jesus?
Introduction
17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
18 “I also say to you that you are aPeter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
Why can’t people today see who Christ is and what he has done for us?
Illustration: The renowned artist Paul Gustave Dore (1821-1883) lost his passport while traveling in Europe. When he came to a border crossing, he explained his predicament to one of the guards. Giving his name to the official, Dore hoped he would be recognized and allowed to pass. The guard, however, said that  many people attempted to cross the border by claiming to be  persons they were not. Dore insisted that he was the man he claimed to be. "All right," said the official, "we'll give you a test, and if you pass it we'll allow you to go through." Handing him a pencil and a sheet of paper, he told the artist to sketch several peasants standing nearby. Dore did it so quickly and skillfully that the guard was convinced he was indeed who he claimed to be. His work confirmed his word!

19 “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”

II. God revealed it to us.

He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
A. Exposition:
Who do the disciples say he is?What is Jesus trying to teach them
Why did Peter say the Christ the son of the living God?
Word Study: Christ-anointed, the Greek translation of the Hebrew word rendered “Messiah” (q.v.), the official title of our Lord, occurring five hundred and fourteen times in the New Testament. It denotes that he was anointed or consecrated to his great redemptive work as Prophet, Priest, and King of his people. He is Jesus the Christ (; ; ), the Anointed One.
B. Application:
When Jesus is specific to us and trying to reveal himself, do we truly see him?
Has God revealed to you who Christ is and should be in your life?

III. Jesus is the foundation of his Church.

And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.
A. Exposition:
Was Jesus telling Peter he is the rock of the church?
Jesus is telling the disciples that his church would last and nothing can come against it.
B. Application:
Is Jesus your rock and your foundation in your life?
If you have Jesus is your life and he is your all, then satan and his demons can’t harm you.
Conclusion: we can see that Jesus was telling us, that in order for us to see who he is, we need to allow God to speak to us and reveal who his son truly is. Then and only then can we truly see that Christ is the Savior of the WORLD.
20 Then He warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was bthe Christ.
