God’s Track Record

Psalm 13 ESV
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. 1 How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? 3 Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, 4 lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,” lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken. 5 But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. 6 I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me.

1  How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever?

How long will you hide your face from me?

2  How long must I take counsel in my soul

and have sorrow in my heart all the day?

How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

3  Consider and answer me, O LORD my God;

light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,

4  lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”

lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.

5  But I have trusted in your steadfast love;

my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.

6  I will sing to the LORD,

because he has dealt bountifully with me.

In this Psalm, David feels abandoned by God… He asks some form of the question, “How long?” 4 times in the first 2 verses.
It seems that David was starting to wonder if this struggle would EVER end.
In verse 2 he says there is sorrow in his heart all the day. His mind was filled with anxiety and turmoil. The uncertainty of not knowing when the struggle would end was consuming David’s thoughts. Sound familiar?
As the Psalm continues, David basically begs God to answer him and bring this time to an end.
But he closes this prayer with confidence and praise because David knew he could trust in God’s steadfast, or unfailing, love. You see, God had a good track record when it came to loving David, and even in the middle of hard times, David knew that.

Did you know that, like David, even Jesus knew this sense of divine abandonment? While he was on the cross Jesus actually cried out to his Father, “Why have you forsaken me?”. But Jesus knew the Father’s track record, and he had hope in the resurrection.
Church family, stay positive during this time of uncertainty and turmoil. When the market is failing, businesses are closing and we can’t even spend time close to each other, find your hope in perfect track record of God’s never-failing love.
Hope to see you soon!
