Luke 22:14-20
The title of the message today is: “At the King’s Table”
2000 years ago Jesus spent His last meal on earth with those whom He loved
It is commonly referred to today as: “The Last Supper”
This meal was the Passover meal celebrated once a year
It was a memorial of God’s saving the Israelites from slavery in Egypt
We do not celebrate the Passover meal bc Jesus’s death and resurrection changed everything
When the Israelites were delivered from Egypt they were told to sacrifice a lamb and put the blood on their doorposts
When Jesus shared this meal with His followers, He was the sacrificial Lamb
Today we are saved, redeemed, and freed from slavery only by the blood of Jesus
We celebrate communion today to remember what Christ did for us
Communion has no power to save us
It does not impute grace
It is not the literal body or blood of Christ
It is a memorial of Jesus’s sacrifice for our sins
To them it was just another passover meal
But to Jesus it was His last passover
It wasn’t just a meal but a prophesy of his own life as fulfilment of His sacrifice
After that night there would be no need for a Passover
Th
There are three great meanings for us today I want to lay upon your heart
The life Jesus gave to save us from our sins
Our freedom in Christ
The promise of His return to join Him at His table on that glorious day
It would be His last supper with them
Our unity in Christ
Our eternal hope in Christ and His return
It would be his last supper in his earthly body
AND Jesus had been looking forward to this meal with great anticipation
Verse 14
Its

Jesus reclined at the table

If your looking at a KJV it may say sat down, but thats not the best translation of that word
A better translation is to (recline, to lean back, or to lay oneself back)
Reclining it speaks of something that free people do
Reclining it speaks of something that free people do
When I worked at the fire dept. the lounge was full of recliners
And when you were a “new guy” they were off limits to you
You were still on probation
You were still a newbie
You did not possess the freedom to sit in a recliner and especially to recline in one
In fact you did not even possess the right to sit at the table unless you were invited
Jesus reclined because he is exhibiting His freedom in the laying down of His life
This freedom Jesus is exhibiting is His willingness to lay His life down
Jesus was not forced upon the cross
Jesus was not overtaken by force
Jesus willingly gave HIMSELF up for our salvation
John 10:17–18 NKJV
“Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”
John 10:17 NKJV
“Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again.
John 10:18 NKJV
No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”
John 10:17–18 NKJV
“Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”
Jesus willingly went to the cross
Jesus willingly took upon Himself the sins of the world
Jesus said, “No greater love than this, that one would lay down His life for His friends”
Jesus did not die for a few, or the elect, but for all
“He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him”
Notice what happens at the table
He reclined
The apostles reclined with Him
Not only did Jesus freely give but what He gave is free to anyone who desires to have it
Just like Jesus fervently desired to have this last supper with the disciples, so does He long to have the great supper with us
Revelation 22:17 NKJV
And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.
Do you have to clean yourself up to be saved?
Do you have to get things together to get saved?
Do you have to be a good person to be saved?
Do you need to know the Bible, go to church, or know another Christian to get saved?
ANYONE WHO DESIRES TAKE OF THE WATER OF LIFE
You can just take out that word anyone and put your name there
Nine years ago my name was there
I desired Christ
I was messed up
I didn’t fix myself
I desired to drink from the deep wells of Jesus
And Jesus took me, and saved, me
The only thing you need is to thirst for Jesus
The second part of this speaks of the freedom in Christ
The Israelites could not set themselves free from slavery in Egypt
And we do not have the power to set ourselves free from sin
BUT whom the Son sets free, is free indeed
John 8:36 NKJV
Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
The apostles reclined with Him
Though the
They did not understand completely what this meant
They took part because they were with Jesus.
We are only truly free, when we are with Jesus.
Verse 15-16

Jesus had a fervent desire to share this meal

I want us to think about the event
Jesus knew He would be arrested not long after this meal
He knew would be beaten
Humiliated
Tortured
And then Crucified
Why would Jesus say He had a fervent desire to eat his last meal?
It would be like me saying I was looking forward to great pain and suffering
It would be like me saying I could not wait to die
Jesus has a fervent desire to fellowship with believers
Here were these men whom would fail Him
Peter would deny Him 3 times
Judas would betray Him
Thomas would doubt Him
At this same table they would argue over who would be the greatest in the Kingdom of God
And yet Jesus says, He had a fervent desire to dine with them
Do you know Jesus desires to fellowship with us
What He wants is a close intimate relationship with us
And maybe you have drifted away from Him
Maybe you haven’t been to a church in a long time
Don’t think Jesus has cast you out or written you off
Jesus desires that close intimate fellowship with believers
BUT theres a second part, HE SAYS:
“for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God”
This passover was a prophetic event of a future event
In other words, this meal foreshadows another meal to come
Jesus was not looking forward to his death
In just a few hours he would pray that God would let this cup pass from Him
In just a few hours Jesus would sweat drops of blood because of the great distress that was coming
In just a few hours he would be betrayed by one his own whom he loved
John 13:1 NKJV
Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
John 13:
Imagine a love like that
At the table with these men who would argue about who is the greatest at this same table
At this table with one who would betray Him
And the Scripture says, “He loved them to the end”
“No greater love than this, that One would lay down His life for His friends”
Jesus at the Passover meal was fully aware he is the Passover Lamb
The passover signified the angel of death passover over Israel’s firstborn
And in this case the blood of Jesus when applied to the souls of humanity would give them eternal life
BUT Jesus was looking forward to His next meal in the kingdom of God
Revelation 19:7–9 NKJV
Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’ ” And he said to me, “These are the true sayings of God.”
Revelation 19:9 NKJV
Then he said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’ ” And he said to me, “These are the true sayings of God.”
Rev 19
What is this marriage supper of the Lamb?
It is the day when we will sit down with Jesus just like these apostles did in the Kingdom of God
There is coming a day when the trumpet will sound and there will be a great banquet in glory
When the believers will be called out of this world
A table will be set
The Scripture says at this table Jesus Himself will serve us
This is the day that we as believer long for
It is a time of great fellowship
It is a time when we will see Jesus for who HE really is
I dare not say its not!
It is a time of celebration and when we are united with Christ forever
No man knows and it could be tonight!
What the apostles experienced that night must have been branded in their hearts and minds forever
What the apostles experienced that night must have been branded in their hearts and minds forever
BUT the marriage of the Lamb will be infinitely greater than that night!
Is this a day you are looking forward to?
If you know Jesus as your Lord and Savor you shall be there
If you do not, there will be a time at the end of this message when you can come to know Him
Heres another meaning to the text: With fervent desire Jesus desires to eat with you”
This is the great day we look forward to
Verse 17-18

The Cup of Oneness

Now this cup Jesus is referring to is the cup of gratitude
This is Jesus thanking God for His acts of provisions and salvation
All twelve are told to share this cup
This act speaks of the Oneness of this meal
1 Corinthians 10:16–17 NKJV
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.
To be able to take communion with my brothers and sisters in Christ is an honor and privilege
We are all connected
Not just because we know each other or go to church together
There is a connecting feature inside every believer
Colossians 2:5 NKJV
For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.
I believe that Jesus was showing these disciples the Oneness that they would all soon have through His blood (The vine also represents Oneness)
They would soon experience a connection with each other through the vine of Christ
What we have in Christ is a great connection that ties us together
A family of believers that cannot be separated by distance or virus
The same Spirit in you is the same Spirit in me and connects us all
Those who are in the vine are always connected in Spirit

At this time I want ask all of you to get your communion cup

Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body which is broken for you”
Jesus knew what he would suffer for you and I
He knew that paying the price for sin would cost Him dearly
He knew he would be beaten
He knew the crown of thorns was coming
BUT HE gave thanks to God for it
As we take of the bread together let us thank God for the body of Christ, and His sacrifice for us
Prayer for the broken body and God’s provisions
“do this in remembrance of Me”
Eat the bread
Likewise He also took the cup after supper saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you”
The cup represents the blood of Jesus that was shed for all the sins of the world
Sin is referred to as a debt we owe to God
All people sin whether were saved or lost
This cup will not remove our sins
Only the blood of Jesus can take our sins away
John the Baptist when he saw Jesus said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world”
He died so that we could live
He took our place on that cross
“God made Him who knew no sin to be sin fo us, so that we might become the righteousness of God”
Prayer for the sacrifice of Jesus to take our sins away

The bread as the “body of Christ”

Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible The Body of Christ in the Lord’s Supper

The Body of Christ in the Lord’s Supper. At the last supper (Mt 26:26–29; Mk 14:22–25; Lk 22:15–20; 1 Cor 11:23–26), which accompanied the Passover supper, Jesus held up a loaf of bread and said, “This is my body”; then he picked up a cup of wine and said, “This is my blood of the covenant” (Mt 26:28). Jesus meant that the bread symbolized his body, which would be broken when he was beaten at his trial and pierced at his crucifixion (Lk 23:33; Jn 19:1, 2). The apostle Paul said that “Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed” (1 Cor 5:7), meaning that the Passover lamb in the OT was an object lesson pointing to “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (Jn 1:29).

For Christians, the body of Christ is viewed symbolically as a broken body (Mt 8:17; 1 Pt 2:24; cf. Is 53:4, 5) in the breaking of the bread at the Lord’s Supper. The cup is a sign of his blood poured out, viewed as the central factor in God’s covenant of grace with his people. Jesus referred to “the new covenant in my blood” (Lk 22:20). The whole ceremony of the Lord’s Supper was also to be a memorial (1 Cor 11:25, 26). In the ceremony believers are reminded that Christ died for sinners, that is, for the forgiveness of their sins (Mt 26:28). They are also reminded that they are participating in the body of Christ in that they are united with him (Rom 6:1–11; 1 Cor 10:16; Gal 2:20; Phil 3:10).

The Body of Christ Viewed as the People of God. The phrase “body of Christ” is also used as a metaphor for the whole church, a unity of believers connected with and dependent V 1, p 372 p 372 on Christ. God’s people are thus said to be members of Christ’s “mystical body” (1 Cor 12:27), in fellowship with Christ and spiritually nourished by him (Eph 5:25b, 29). A number of other metaphors are also used for the whole people of God, such as the vine (Ps 80:8), temple of God (1 Cor 3:16, 17), building (1 Pt 2:5), chosen people (v 9), and family of God (Eph 3:15). Such metaphors amplify the interrelatedness, communion, and dependence of the “body of Christ” upon the living God.

The term “body of Christ” was often used by Paul to remind a local church that it was a vital part of the larger body. Paul said to the church at Rome, “For as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another” (Rom 12:4, 5). Paul taught the Corinthian Christians that they, individually and collectively, were part of the body of Christ (1 Cor 12:27). They and Paul were all baptized by one Spirit into that one body (v 13; Eph 5:30).

In the NT the term “body of Christ” is used to mean both the universal church and each local group of believers. In both senses the church is said to be the spiritual body in which believing Jews and Gentiles are united (Eph 2:14–16; 3:6; 4:4). It is the body that Christ redeemed (Eph 5:23b), over which he presides (Col 1:18) and sovereignly rules (Eph 1:22, 23) and for which he supplies strength and unity (4:15, 16; Col 2:19).

Christian believers are said to be “baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit” (1 Cor 12:13). Scripture also describes this baptism as being divinely “born anew” by the Spirit of God (Jn 3:3–5), and becoming “new creations in Christ” (2 Cor 5:17) through a spiritual “washing of regeneration” of sins and renewal (Ti 3:5, 6). The believers who make up the one body of Christ are said to share together in partaking of Christ the one loaf, the one who is the bread of life (Jn 6:35), set forth symbolically in the Lord’s Supper (1 Cor 10:16, 17).

Each member of the body of Christ has been given spiritual gifts with which to serve Christ in the body (Rom 12:6; 1 Cor 12:11). Such gifts are enumerated several times in Scripture, and range from apostleship and pastoring to encouraging and showing mercy (Rom 12:7, 8; Eph 4:11). The ministry of serving is to be shared by all Christians, for example, through giving to the physical needs of others (Acts 11:29, 30; 1 Cor 16:1–4; 2 Cor 8:1–5) and praying for one another (Eph 1:15–23; 3:14–19; 6:18–20). No one should look down on others or on their gifts, since God has chosen each one to function in his or her place in the body (1 Cor 12:14–26). The gifts are given “to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ” (Eph 4:12, 13). The goal is “to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ” (vv 15, 16).

We drink this cup knowing that His blood is enough
Drink the cup

The cup poured out for you

We do all this looking forward the day when Jesus comes to take us home
We are to be like Jesus with fervent desire long to be with Jesus at the King’s table in glory
Everyday is one day closer to that great and glorious day
I want to speak to the one or two who may not know about hew hope in Christ
Romans 15:13 NKJV
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 5:5 NKJV
Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
1 Thessalonians 2:19 NKJV
For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming?
Hope comes through grace
