Show clip
Divine punishment at Hardees...
One year I bought Tasha a vacuum cleaner
Don’t do that! - She loved it
Not like shorts from hardware store
Sometimes we are just oblivious to the world around us
The disciples have been oblivious to Jesus...
Every time there’s a miracle, they’re shocked
“Who is this?”
Refer to timeline:
Only event in second year
Then Jesus goes into parable mode
Spends time with Pharisees...
Some scholars think everything can shift right
Looks like this:
After last week, this happens
Mark 8:27–30 ESV
27 And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29 And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” 30 And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.
mk 8:27
But Peter still didn’t know what the Christ was!
Mark 8:31–33 ESV
31 And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
mk 8:31
Peter wants Jesus to be his own version of the Messiah
We want that too!
Watch video
Notice some things...
1. Good man, God rest His soul --
He’s like MOSES!
2. Thank GOD it’s going the other direction from a religious state
2. I am a religious woman, I believe in what Judaism gave us
3. He doesn’t know why we think Jesus is the Messiah
He also says there are no signs for who He will be
It will be good he says
4. Story for people who have not been taught critical thinking
My faith IS NOT superstition — Christians are not brainwashed, mindless, robots with no intelligence
5. “Because redemption hasn’t arrived. If the redemption had arrived, there would be no need to work and do the commandments but Judaism says that we still need to fulfill the commandments because no one here lives their lives in total joy.
That is almost the best theology I’ve ever heard!
6. Christianity is not connected to Judaism at all?
Jesus was a Jew that became Christian?
7. It’s not our tradition - its engrained to not believe in Jesus
We have a different picture - it’s going to fix the world
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
It will be the way it’s supposed to be
The Jewish guy making video has no clue why he’s asking
Asking Israeli Jews tells us this
They all have their own expectations...
While knowing nothing about who Jesus is
We’re all egocentric!
Can you blame them?
Think about the church, it’s the same!
I don’t wanna know about Jesus, I just want to know what it means for me!
Some of you think that way
We need to be Christocentric
Not centered on self, centered on Christ
Peter was in the same boat
He knows he’s the Messiah...
He doesn’t know what that means
Now let’s see what happens...
Mark 9:2 ESV
2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them,
mk 9:
Most scholars think Jesus took these 3 because they were special
Others think it’s because they were troublemakers
We already know about Peter
Remember what Jesus calls these two? Boanerges?
The sons of thunder and the ear chopper
Transfigured
Trans - changed
Figure - appearance or shape
The house around me is currently undergoing a transfiguration...
Jesus just shape-shifted! To what?
Mark 9:3 ESV
3 and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them.
ml 9:3
Matthew adds His face shone like the sun
Spurgeon explains that this isn’t a miracle
It’s a pausing of one
Jesus is showing His natural glow!
The miracle is that this nature has been covered His whole life!
Check this out:
Mark 9:4 ESV
4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.
mk 9:4
Whoa! Elijah and Moses are here?!
These are two very important characters!
MOSES:
The most important Jewish prophet
Freed Israelites from Egypt
Gave the Laws for their nation from God
ELIJAH:
Prophet at one of the worst times for idol worship
Prophesied he will return in Malachi
Mysteries around these guys
Both have interesting death situations
MOSES:
says no one knows where his body is
says Michael and Satan disputed over his body
ELIJAH:
says he never died!
Chariot of fire caught him in whirlwind
Some think that these are the two witnesses in Revelation
Some think Enoch and Elijah because neither died
Either way, Moses and Elijah are present with Jesus...
Must have been so cool for Peter, James and John
These are guys they’ve heard about their whole lives!
Imagine meeting Abraham, David or John the Baptist
If you could meet any 2, who? (Not Jesus)
Noah? How much animal poop?
Job? Did you really walk with dinosaurs?
Ehud? Just how fat was Eglon when you stabbed him?
I’d do one OT and one NT
Probably Adam to learn about creation and the fall
Maybe John because he walked with Jesus
AND saw Revelation!
SO COOL to meet Moses and Elijah in person
The summation of the Old Testament, and the prophets for the future at the same time
In the flesh
Meaning, they could see in front of them that resurrection is REAL...
In the end, there is something called the rapture
We have dead people coming back to life - like Moses
And people who are alive caught up with Jesus - like Elijah
Let’s see their response:
Mark 9:5–6 ESV
5 And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified.
Luke 9:32–33 ESV
32 Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said.
Do you ever say something dumb...
luke 9:32
Marion Barry former mayor of DC
Travelled to Africa and gave a speech
I am making this trip to Africa because Washington is an international city, just like Tokyo, Nigeria or Israel...
I hope I don’t have to explain why that’s dumb...
Peter blurts… Uh, we can make some tents...
James and John are like, “What did you just say?”
Kids lesson last week: tabernacle means dwelling place
Let’s forget about this crucifixion thing and stay here
Then the Father steps in
Mark 9:7–8 ESV
7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” 8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.
mk 9:7-
This cloud is known as the Shekinah glory
We’ve seen it when Israel followed in the desert
When God have Moses the Ten Commandments
When Solomon dedicated the Temple
When Jesus ascended into heaven
And when Jesus returns
Now we see it as Jesus is transfigured
As Peter was saying, “We’ll make a tent for Moses, one for Elijah, and one for Jesus...”
God steps in and says “NO! This is My beloved Son! Just Jesus… Listen to HIM!”
Jesus came for one thing - to do God’s will
Forget about tents with others
Forget about avoiding death
Forget about doing anything your way...
Listen to HIM!
Bam, everyone disappears...
Mystified, they walk down the hill
Jesus says this
Mark 9:9 ESV
9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
mk 9:9
By the way, don’t mention this to anyone...
Yeah sure! No problem!
The whole cloud, booming voice, encounters with a famous dead guy and one who’s been missing for centuries… my lips are sealed!
Until you rise from the dead… what?!
Now they’re just full of questions
Mark 9:10–11 ESV
10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. 11 And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”
Mark 9:10–11 ESV
10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. 11 And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”
mk 9:10-
What does rising from the dead mean?
Oh, hey, why does Elijah need to come again?
Mark 9:12–13 ESV
12 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”
Jesus answers in two parts:
Mark 9:2–13 ESV
2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” 8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only. 9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. 11 And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” 12 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”
That is true, he will come before the second coming
Probably as one of the witnesses in
2. Then He says, he HAS come!
And everyone treated him like trash...
In fact, mankind murdered him!
Turn to Matthew...
Matthew 17:13 ESV
13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.
Romans 5:8 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Oh yeah! The voice crying in the wilderness...
Ephesians 2:8–9 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 10:13 ESV
13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
John 1:12 ESV
12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,

Crazy Story!

But WHY?
Remember the conversation with Peter before this?
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
I’m going to die - kinda a downer
This is to say, don’t forget who I AM!
Jesus would be telling us that same thing today
The cross isn’t Jesus’ glory - it’s the path to His glory!

Closing

There are terrible things in this world
But there’s something terrible behind those things
It’s SIN
Think of Peter, John and James… TERRIFIED
These are sinful men… every right to be terrified
Who are they before the glory of God?
Who are we?
Confined space training
In the Temple, priests would have a rope
Sin cannot be before God, there is a wage for that - death
Yet Peter stands before God’s glory...
There was one thing giving them boldness
Jesus was there between them
Without Jesus there, they had every reason for fear
For us, we need Jesus there too
If we don’t, one day we will stand before God
That glory is something you will need to be afraid of too
You will not meet Him as friend, as lover of your soul
You will meet Him as judge
Here’s the question you have to answer
Will you stay oblivious to who Jesus is...
Or will you acknowledge His power, authority and status?
Will you accept Him as your Lord, and Savior
The Son of God, the greatest expression of love...
Will He be your
