SPEAK and WELCOME UNBELIEVERS – NON FOLLOWERS And THOSE who struggle in their faith –
You may have never been to a worship gathering or you haven’t been in a really long time either because you don't know what the truth about Jesus is. Is He a fictional character in History, was he real and just a crazy lunatic or is He the one true God who invaded our humanity and truly the only means by which our broken relationship with God is repaired. We are so glad you have joined in on our walk through this absolutely amazing piece of literature written by the best friend of Jesus.
FOREGROUND -
What is it like to be in a position that we would have to believe in something or someone that its doesn’t seem reasonable.
AS we have been going through this fantastic piece of literature, and let me preface this by saying one of the most important writings in all of Human History. As we have gone through we Have looked at the Thames that the Apostle John is building as He writes and unfolds the Over all purpose of this particular Gospel. The 4 gospels in the Bible are named Matthew, Mark, Like and John. Matthew, Mark and Luke are written as historical narratives that account for the life and ministry in step by step, from birth to death, details of what Jesus said and did.
TENSION
Luke outlines this in His opening statement where He says that he wrote this down so that we who read it would know the truth of what happened. We would know the Story.
John Gospel is different - It is written from a spiritual perspective and its purpose is so that we who read it would we would believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that believing we would have life in His name - Eternal life that is.
AS we have looked at John chapter 1-5 we would see john Laying out 5 major thyme's about Jesus
Ch. 1 Jesus is God
Ch.2 Jesus came to Die
Ch. 3 Jesus is miraculously revealed
Ch 4. Jesus is the only one who can satisfy our deepest thirst
and Ch. 5 Jesus as God heals those who want it
And the collision of those statements is “DO you want to be healed by Jesus as your relationship with God is repaired? As we look back at the central Story of The bible that We had a perfect relationship with God, we Broke and Lost our relationship with God, God sent Jesus to do the only work that could repair that Relationship, and God freely offers it to all.
In Chapters 6-10 John is going to lay out 5 major themes about what is true Saving Faith?
Ch. 6 Saving Faith is required
Ch 7 Saving faith is not limited to knowledge
Ch 8 Saving Faith is not Belief - It is not believing that the facts and events of Jesus are true.
Ch. 9 Saving faith IS miraculous Trust.
Ch 10 Saving Faith is KEY -
The Collision of these passages of text is that accepting God free offer means were all in - Not just understanding and believing in a set of facts about Jesus but that were all in. The illustration was the wheelbarrow across Niagara falls. Believing IN jesus requires us to get IN the wheelbarrow and let Jesus carry us across in a tight wire. Being ALL IN with Jesus - This is the kind of faith the is done by the miracle of His spirit and the Faith that is true saving faith. Faith That is ALL in with Jesus even when it is difficult or hard to follow Him.
Chapter 10-15 John is now going to lay down the Themes of WHAT happens to us when we go all in with Jesus. What Changes about us -
In we would discover that we become true followers and not just fans.
In Ch. 13 We would discover that we are now servants as Jesus was
In ch. 14 we will discover that as True Followers of Jesus we are FILLED with the Spirit Of God.
In Ch 15 we will discover that we are Fruit Producers. Multiplyers of the Kindom by the power of God.
Before any of that Happen Something completely miraculous happens to us first - The first thing that happens and must happens for any of the rest of there things to occur in our life is that we are Brought from being dead to being alive. We are Resurrected! Let Look at our text!
TRUTH
1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 It was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
3 So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”
4 But when Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.”
5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
6 So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was.
7 Then after this He said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”
8 The disciples said to Him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone You, and are You going there again?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10 “But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
11 This He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go, so that I may awaken him out of sleep.”
12 The disciples then said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”
13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking of literal sleep.
14 So Jesus then said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead,
15 and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him.”
16 Therefore Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so that we may die with Him.”
17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.
18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off;
19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.
20 Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but Mary stayed at the house.
21 Martha then said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.
22 “Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,
26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”
27 She said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world.”
28 When she had said this, she went away and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”
29 And when she heard it, she got up quickly and was coming to Him.
30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met Him.
31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and consoling her, when they saw that Mary got up quickly and went out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
32 Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”
33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled,
34 and said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.”
35 Jesus wept.
36 So the Jews were saying, “See how He loved him!”
37 But some of them said, “Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have kept this man also from dying?”
38 So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.
39 Jesus said, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days.”
40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”
41 So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
42 “I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.”
43 When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.”
44 The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
45 Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary, and saw what He had done, believed in Him.
46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.
TRUTH
John 11:1-46
UNPACKING
BACKGROUND
Vs 1 and 2 - in this village of Bethany, where Jesus had spent the night many times before, lived these three siblings together: Mary who would later anoint Jesus feet with expensive perfume and wipe them off with her hair and in the process manage to Frustrate the keeper of the money Judas;
UNPACKING
Martha, who when She invited Jesus into her home for the first time was more concerned with the tasks of the day rather than spending time with Jesus and managed to get mad a her sister Mary for only spending time with Jesus.
These two sisters lived with their brother Lazarus. Jesus and Lazarus are great friends - Jesus Loves Lazarus like His own brother.
Vs 3 These two sisters send word to Jesus there is a problem we need you to come fix. Lazarus the one you love is Sick - Its rather a short message and it apparently takes a couple of days to get to Jesus. Mary and Martha are assuming that Jesus will show up and fix the problem because they are friends with Jesus, Jesus has stayed at the house and jesus has this brotherly affection for Lazarus.
V4 Jesus hears the messenger and replies: This will not end in death but for the Glory of God, so that the Son of God might be revealed by it -
VS6 Jesus stays two more days in the place He was staying -
NOTE - Jesus doesn’t drop what He is doing and run to where Lazarus is - Jesus does not let the tyranny of the urgent drive His decision making. Jesus, confident in His declaration goes about the tasks of ministry in the place He was at - He might have been curing others - He might have been saving souls - he might have been forgiving someone - Who knows what He was doing -
And I imagine that was Mary and Martha thought as they were waiting in Jesus to solve this sickness problem and He wasn't showing up. What is He doing and why isnt He here to solve this problem?
Q: Here is an interesting question: How many times do we find ourselves in a situation where something So very urgent has come upon our live and we begin to Cry out to God “COME FIX THIS” and it seems like God doesn't come when we call?
There have been many times in my life where I have had the urgent problem that I thought I wanted God to solve, Yet is was not my ultimate problem, God didnt show up to fix that one and when He came, looking back He came at the perfect time and for his glory.
YOu SEE God hears our cries and when He comes. He comes powerfully instantly and He comes when it maximizes His glory not ours and in doing so reveals our bigger problem and solves that!
Vs 7-16 there is this conversation that really seems like an argument between Jesus and His followers - Vs 7 Jesus says let go to Judea Again! V8 they argue that that doesn't make sense as they were almost Killed there just a few days before - You see back in Chapter 8 They were in Judea talking with some of the Pharisees when Jesus Said “Before Abraham was Born I Am - This is when Jesus claimed to be God and the Jewish people were exacting the Law on Him for blasphemy by picking up stones and wanting to kill Him.
The disciples of Jesus thought its a crazy Idea to go back there. Jesus Convinces that Lazarus is really dead and they have to go and THEN Thomas - The one we refer to as doubting Thomas Says - Let’s all go together so we can die with Him!
now some of us think that's a pretty funny line of dialog - Almost like Thomas is saying “well ok, if were gonna do this than lets do this!
I want you to think about what Thomas has just said “let us also go so that we may die with Him”
Thomas has just said that He would rather Die with Jesus than Live without Him.
That is the ongoing position of a true follower of Jesus!
Vs 17 the Miracle begins!!
Vs 17 Jesus shows up on the Scene and discovers that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for 4 days - I wnt you to notice the timeline Here -
Jesus gets word that Lazarus is Sick - He waits two days - The trip is about two miles - Walk it in a couple of hours - He gets there and Lazarus has already been in the Tomb for 4 days. What that means is when Jesus first heard Lazarus was sick, the reality was He was already dead! Jesus knew this! Jesus didn't rush because Jesus knew already what the main problem was that He was going to have to solve. Larasurs was dead.
Martha hears that Jesus is coming VS 20 and 21 and leaves Mary at the house with others who have come to morn and she approaches Jesus and says : “If only you would have been here my brother would not have Died” she continues with Even NOW I believe that what Ever ytou ask of God, God will give you” - When Mary get to Jesus in VS 32 She repeats the Same thing “ IF you had only been there than my brother would not have Died -
Jesus response to this claim is “I am the Resurrection and the Life; He who believe in Me will live even if he dies and everyone who believes in me will never die!
Jesus turns to Martha after making this claim and Asks an earth shattering question “DO you believe this?
You see here is the problem - Mary and Martha both believed that Jesus could fix sickness but neither one believed He could conquer death - HE can handle anything but death - Death seems to have its victory in the end - Jesus says “not so fast -
Vs 33 says that Jesus saw people weeping including Mary and Martha and He was DEEPLY MOVED in the Spirit and Troubled - Some of your versions will say He did Groan in the Spirit or Disturbed in the Spirit -
Here is what that really means That Jesus was really Mad - He was mad at death - How many of you have lost a loved one and been mad at death - Jesus is no different - Here is where things get cosmic for all of us - Jesus who is mad at death decides he is going to display His power over death and openly declare that Death has no hold on any who believe.
VS 35 says Jesus Wept - Jesus didn't weep because Lazarus was dead - Oh no He know that was going to be solved - Jesus did weep because others were in morning- Oh No He knew that would be solved as well. Jesus wept because of their unbelief - They were believing in real and practical ways that Jesus, The created of the universe could not handle death. Jesus the very giver of life was standing right in front of them and they did not recognise who he was. This is what made Jesus weep.
Jesus then proceeds to engage in the ultimate battle between life and death and the victor and only possible councour. Jesus says Open the Tomb -
He then Shouts with a Loud Voice - Lazarus Come Forth -
He then Shouts with a Loud Voice - Lazarus Come Forth -
Vs 44 says that Lazarus came forth bound hand and foot in the grave clothes -
Let me just declare something to you today — and I want you to think about this - If Jesus, Had not specified that He was speaking to Lazarus - Here is what would have happened - Every grave on the planet from all of human history would have been empty. Everyone would have COME FORTH” And so not to freak the entire planet out and only display the Glory of God to those who were in the presence of Jesus He specified Lazarus.
VS 44 Jesus also says something so very important to the community of people who Saw the Glory of God revealed and who were around Lazarus - Jesus commands Lazarus's community to “unbind Him and Let Him Go”
Here is what this means to us - As Jesus calls us to follow Him we are resurrected - Brought out of the death grip of our sin and trespasses and made alive in Christ - When that happens were going to appear in grave close - Were still gonna be bound up with eh grave clothes of our past - Our life of death and the church, the body of Jesus is commanded to help unbind us and set us free - We also all need to realize that we all need unbinding and to be set free - This is not a once and done thing but an ongoing process that we work together in community.
You see the first thing that happens as we place of trust in Jesu is we are resurrected and made new and we become part of the Body of Jesus, the church, the community of life and we help each other remove our grave clothes and be set free -
This is where we must let this text confront our life -
VS 45 says that Many saw what Jesus did and Believed and other did not - Do you Believe? DO you believe that Jesus is God who came to die, who has been miraculously revealed as the only one who can satisfy your deepest thirst, and who heals everyone who wants it.
Do you believe that Saving Faith is required, that it is more thatn knowledge about facts or ebelieving those facts are true, and that Saviving faith is the key to eternal live and something that happens by a miracle?
So you believe that Jesus is the Ressurection and the Life that He is victorious over death and when He sais that anyone who believes in Him will live although there is physical death?
Do you want ythe grave clothess of your past life to be remived and Do you want to be set free?
