A Personal Note from Peter

Peter is at the end of his ministry and knows that he will die soon but he sees what is happening in the church and what is headed their way. There are 3 times in short section he tells them remember or not forget.
3 times in short section he tells them remember or not forget.

12 So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have.

12 So I will always remind you

12 So I will always remind you of these things,

ELABORATION even though you know them

ELABORATION and are firmly established in the truth you now have

So I will always remind you

13 I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body

15 And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things.

I will alway remind you ...
I think it is right to refresh your memory ....
you will always be able to remember these things.

Verse 12

Since Peter was so set on making sure they were reminded, so does that mean that they were falling away or had they forgotten the gospel?
We know from verse 12 that they
They know the gospel
They are firmly established in the gospel
Today, this message is needed by those of us who are currently standing on God’s word as well as those who have made their stand apart from or contrary to scripture.

Verses 13 & 14

Peter isn’t going to live much longer and he knows it.
How does he describe dyeing?
As if he is living in a tent and will soon leave that tent.
die
Paul also speaks of this life as a tent.

5 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

- If this tent is destroyed, we have a building ...
- I urge you as foreigners and exciles ....
- If this tent is destroyed, we have a building ...
- For while we are in this tent

4 For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.

When we leave this tent we will receive a building from God.
We will all be facing death, all of our loved ones will face death and everyone we meet will face death.
What does this mean for believers?
What does this mean for the lost?
Peter says Once again - I am going to keep on reminding you.

15 And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things.

Why? - “so that you will always remember”
Do we keep reminding ourselves? Others?
He will keep reminding them so they will always remember --
Even after Peter’s death, he will continue to remind believers, how?
His writings
His ministry was extended into those he discipled.
God’s Word - Majesty of God’s Word
The New International Version. (2011). (). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan..

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” i 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.

When Peter taught them about the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, He was not following something men made up. He had proof that what he was teaching was real. What he believed had been verified and confirmed. In what ways?
Mount of transfiguration
1st by Jesus Christ himself. -
Scripture

19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

2nd by the written Word.

19 So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.

Peter’s experience did not overshadow scriptures. His experience confirmed scripture. He did not rely on experience to understand the things of God, he based his understanding in scripture, the written word, which was confirmed by his experience.
He also gives us a clue as to how we learn from scripture
Pay attention
3 ways we learn from scripture
Illumination - as a light in a dark place
Revelation - prophecy
Inspiration -

20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation,

21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Remeber
No prophesy is about the prophet’s own interpretation.
Scripture is sure - certian
It’s origin is not from human will
It is God’s word recorded by the prophet as he was “carried along” by the Holy Spirit. As a ship carried by the wind.
