In Whom Should We Trust?

When All Seems Wrong

Habakkuk was a contemporary of Jeremiah, Zephaniah, and Nahum. This places him about in the reign of King Jehoiakim.
Habakkuk’s name means “to wrestle” or “to embrace”, which he does both with the Lord and His ways throughout the book. Sometimes, we wonder if the Old Testament prophets have anything to say to us today. Habakkuk takes on one of the modern-day myths of Christianity today – “That when you come to Jesus that all your problems in this world will be gone and never touch you again.”
We’ve touched this same subject our last couple of sermons and we say again, if you believe this talk to anyone that’s been a Christian for more than a day and you’ll find it’s not at all true.
But Habakkuk takes on a modern myth as well – “I may as well not partake in the worship of God if He can not help me. As a matter of fact, if He can not help me why should I follow Him at all?”
As we said, Habakkuk was a prophet as King Jehoiakim reigned. His reign followed that of King Josiah whom we’re told in
(ESV) — 2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and walked in all the way of David his father, and he did not turn aside to the right or to the left.
