READ
Isaiah 6:1–7 ESV
In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

SET-UP
Uzziah= 52 year reign as King- a good king
He dies from Leprosy as a result of God’s judgment.
First leadership transition in the memory of most alive.
-1918 Spanish flu- over 100 years since that hit USA.
4 Areas We Need to Adjust our Perspective

Change (1a)

The world changes quickly
3 weeks ago- just returned from a pastor retreat skiing and preparing for spring break with family.
3 weeks ago- U.S. economy was as strong as ever.
3 weeks ago- unemployment rate was at historic lows.
3 weeks ago- Covid-19 was China’s problem.
Today we find ourselves not even leaving our home except for necessities.
Today we find the economy entering drastic times.
Last week broke a record for the number of unemployment claims. 5 times the previous record.
God never changes
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever
Hebrews 13:8 ESV
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
James 1:17 ESV
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
Chaos in the world does not mean chaos in heaven.
In heaven nothing had changed- God was still on his throne and being worshiped.
Building house on the rock or in the sand.
When we trust physical things they shift and cause us to fall.

Significance (1b-4)

Everything in heaven is about God, not us.
Train of his Robe= his glory
ILL- train of the robe of a King- shows his importance
ILL- Bride- train of the dress shows their glory/ beauty
If it is about us- poor pitiful us.
This crisis is an opportunity for the glory of God to shine in the midst of darkness.
Seraphim- creature’s purpose was to lower self and exalt God.
Covering face- humility
covering feet- unworthy
The haughty looks of man shall be brought low, and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled, and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.
Isaiah 2:11 ESV
The haughty looks of man shall be brought low, and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled, and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.
And the haughtiness of man shall be humbled, and the lofty pride of men shall be brought low, and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.
Isaiah 2:17 ESV
And the haughtiness of man shall be humbled, and the lofty pride of men shall be brought low, and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.
God’s ultimate reign will come.
“The earth is full of your glory”- the verb is not in original language.
Blessed be his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen and Amen!
Psalm 72:19 ESV
Blessed be his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen and Amen!
This a look to the future of when God establishes his eschatological kingdom.
Right now things can be bad, but God will put an end.
Lord’s Prayer- “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
God’s glory is evident around us, but a greater time is coming.
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
Romans 1:18–23 ESV
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
Despite this fallen world and prince of darkness...
God will put an end to this.
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
Revelation 21:4 ESV
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
vs 4- Our response is like Seraphim-
Humbling of self (covering face and feet)
loud thunderous worship.

Righteousness (6-7)

What standard do we measure ourselves by?
Isaiah was a prophet- better than almost all on the earth. Yet, compared to God he was nothing.
Seeing God led him to repentance.
When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, 14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:13–14 ESV
When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 3:23 ESV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Don’t miss heaven because you measured yourself against another person and thought you measured up.
Our righteousness is as filthy rags.
We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
Isaiah 64:6 ESV
We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
He was righteous- died for our unrighteousness, so we can be forgiven.
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,
1 Peter 3:18 ESV
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,

Calling

I know we feel like the victims right now.
We think we are entitled to something for this time of sorrow.
It is time for Christians to stand up and fulfill the calling.
What is it that God wants us to do?
Is obedience always blessed with fruit?
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1:8 ESV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Today China is just as close as your next door neighbor.
It is not time for the church to hide. It is time for the church to be the church.
Who will go for God.
“Here I am, send me.”
CONCLUSION
Our perspective to this time needs to be adjusted to that of God’s.
Are you seeing these things as God sees them?

Have you surrendered your life to him?

if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Romans 10:9 ESV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
