Chapter 7 outlined the repressive/oppressive power of sin.
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
Romans 7:24
Sin frustrates every part of life as we know it. In your experience, what has sin frustrated in this life?
Paul goes ahead and asks the question! Is there any hope!? Who will rescue me!?
Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
So when we get to 8:1 we now know why it was a big deal that there is now no condemnation.
1 BEC No condemnation, no condition,
NOT no mistakes, failures or sin.
The Law revealed sin. It even caused sin to be magnified. When Jesus filled up the law and its requirements He gave us new standing in relation to the Law.
2-11 BEC as the flesh and spirit are contrasted it should remind us of other times Paul used this style. Galatians 5
