Sin Problem?
Do we still have a sin problem today? Maybe we stop, think, consider, ponder, mediate and praise God for the answer today.
It’s a wonderful life changing, destiny changing thing when we have our sins forgiven through the blood of Jesus Christ
Washing away our sins (Act22:16).
16 ‘Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’
This is a question we have more than likely been asked and many have responded to before, this is the solution, the victory over the sin problem.
Washing them away by His very blood (Rev1:5).
5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood—
Freed, given victory, able to overcome by the very blood of Christ, I will come back and talk more about the victory as we go on today, along the way we need to realize
While we have victory, it does not mean we don’t still struggle with sin.
We still fall short, we still sin at times (Rom3:23; 1Jn1:8-10; 1Jn1:7; 1Pt5:8)
We all fall short of the glory of God by sin; check out this passage too
8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.
God is not a liar, there still is a sin problem, but JEsus is the sin solution and to our everyday falling short He will continue to be our solution
7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
Our eternal victory, our closer walk happens when we realize this and know what to do (1Jn2:1-2)
1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; 2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.

To overcome sin, to have a closer walk with thee we need to understand how sin develops even within the Christian (Jm1:12-15).
12 Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.
Looking at how sin develops, how to overcome sin and the reminder of our victory and how to have continued victory are what we are looking at today.

There is a formula (in general) for sin that is in our passage today (Jm1:12-15), temptation, desire, sin itself, and results of sin, death. Now maybe you don’t think that this pertains to you, stop, look, be alert, don’t be deceived by the deceitfulness or the consequences of sin.
First is the temptation (Jm1:14; Heb4:15; Heb2:18)
14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.

Notice temptation has parts even. lust or desire as different versions say, and enticement.
Desire or lust = a strong desire for something
Enticement = opportunity and encouragement to satisfy the lust or the thing desired.
so in other others Temptation = desire + opportunity
(insert illustration) (cookies from cookie jar) expand on the illustration here. you have your own temptation (cookie) in your life, you know what causes a desire, lust and you are enticed from within about and can lead to sin.
(Temptation is not a sin slide inserted here) - temptation is not a sin, it is to the Christian who understands that an opportunity for victory! It is a call to battle, not surrender!
Even Jesus was tempted
15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.
But did not sin, and because of that, He can understand, relate, and to come to our aid!
18 For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.
Next, from temptation comes sins itself (Jm1:15)
15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.
So when lust, desire, enticement is conceived it gives birth to sin.
It goes from desire to action and becomes sin so now we have
Sin = desire + opportunity + action
Results of sin = death (Jm1:15; Isa59:2; Rev21:8)
Stop, think, consider, ponder this, Sin has consequences, that is why Jesus had to come, live, die so our sins could be forgiven, but now look at that verse again. Sin brings death. Isaiah said it like this
2 But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.
And if that were not serious enough, grace enough, drastic enough may we remember this
8 “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
so . . . lust/desire + opportunity + action + no forgiveness = death
(transition): Maybe you think, but it is a only a cookie, we are not talking about a single sin, 1Jn1:7 has that covered with 1Jn2:1-2, we are talking about sinful lifestyle that can come from just a cookie. We need to stop, consider, ponder the severity of sin and stop the development of sin in the temptation stage so it does not become a sin.
Stop temptation dead in it’s tracks before it becomes sin and can cause the death (eternal separation) to you. So how about some suggestions, applications on how to overcome sin in our closer walk with thee, for victory is ours when we do!

How to keep our hand out of the cookie jar. God’s Word gives us ways of application to stop temptation (the ever enticing cookie) in its tracks!

Change our desires (Rom12:1-2; Gal5:24; Ps119:11; Mt4:3-10; Ps116:12-14; Rom8:1, 5:1; Ps119:104)
Changing our desires is a part of our transformation process; so that we can present ourselves, our bodies, our actions, as a holy and pleasing sacrifice to God as paraphrased from (Rom12:1-2).
We change our desires by crucifying the passions and desires of the flesh (see Gal5:24)
Application to changing our desires
God’s Word has been, will always be a great tool, instrument to helping you overcome temptation and overcome sin (defined as a sinful lifestyle)
11 Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.
Jesus used the Word to overcome temptation in the wilderness when tempted by Satan according to (Mt4:3-10). And if it worked for Jesus it will work for us too!
God’s word can change our desires, look at these verse and you can see His love, His longsuffering, and His mercy. Hopefully that creates a new desire to love, honor, worship and serve Him.
12 What shall I render to the Lord For all His benefits toward me? 13 I shall lift up the cup of salvation And call upon the name of the Lord. 14 I shall pay my vows to the Lord, Oh may it be in the presence of all His people.
Benefits = Salvation
Benefits = to be with all His people!
Maybe remember no condemnation (Rom8:1); or justification (Rom5:1) those are some great benefits!
May we become a people who have changed our desires to the point that we even hate sin.
104 From Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way.
(transition) - the more we know the word, study the word, apply the word the less likely we are to sin against God or allow the temptations of this world (1Jn2:15-17) to take hold of us, entice us and lead us away. So in the process of changing our desires brings us to more application.
Limit our opportunities (Mt6:13; Mt26:41; Ps101:3-4; Job31:1; 1Cor15:33)

Remember temptation = desire/lust + opportunity
Jesus said ask, ask not to be led into temptation (Mt6:13)
Pray, so not to fall into temptation (Mt26:41)
Follow the example of David (Ps101:3-4)
3 I will set no worthless thing before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not fasten its grip on me. 4 A perverse heart shall depart from me; I will know no evil.
David said will not put anything before his eyes, and we know what happened when he did, and then there was Job who made a covenant with his eyes.
Know that sin can birth to sin (1Cor15:33)
33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.”
Bad company, sinful lifestyle can lead you to desire, lust opportunity and the birth of sin and maybe the death (spiritually speaking) of you.
Exercise self-control (Gal5:22-23; Act2:38; Eph3:16; Rom8:12-13; Php2:12-13; 1Cor10:13)
Sin is birthed when we put into action our evil, lustful desire in which we had an opportunity to do.
Self-control brings continuous victory as evidenced by the Fruit of the Spirit (Gal5:22-23) and that Spirit strengthens us in our inner man (Eph3:16) so that we can do all things through Christ (Php4:13) by putting to death the deeds of the body.
12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
It is through His word that we get faith (Rom10:17) and we get belief in the divine help needed and provided (Eph3:20); So important, so vital for us to understand the power available to us as we try to live and do God’s will.
12 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
so, no more excuses to not have victory over sin or even the temptation of it and have a closer walk with thee.
13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
You are not alone, if you are tempted, so are others, but remember God is faithful. He has given you what you need to have victory over temptation and even sin.
(Transition) so now what? what happens if we sin today as a Christian?
Sin has victory if we continue to sin and it results in punishment
Remember we have an advocate with the Father (1Jn2:1-2) and that happened when we repented and obeyed (Act2:38) because we believed and confessed (Rom10:9-10)
Know we have forgiveness when we turn to Him, return to Him. Our present sins can be forgiven! Sins meaning sinful lifestyle after becoming a Christian. Or if not a Christian becoming a Christian
