The Sacrifice - The King
Genesis 22:
9 When they arrived at the place that God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar on top of the wood.
10 Then Abraham reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son.
11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” He replied, “Here I am.”
12 Then he said, “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.”
13 Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in the thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.
14 And Abraham named that place The Lord Will Provide, so today it is said: “It will be provided on the Lord’s mountain.”
Have you ever had a place you could go to? A place you knew you would be safe? Sometimes on a Saturday, I will take the boys and we will go to Mom and Dad’s house. This becomes a place where we can forget about the world. We may play a game of Settlers of Catan or play with the horses. But we always leave feeling refreshed.
Mt. Moriah is such a place. It may seem far removed from us because we live in North America, but it is an amazing place of history and love. This is the place that God begins to lay the foundation for His future plan to redeem mankind.
1 Then Solomon began to build the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah where the Lord had appeared to his father David, at the site David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
2 Chronicles 3:1
Mt. Moriah became a place of pilgrimage and associated with the glory of God. But it all began with Abraham. God used to Abraham to demonstrate His love for us. He used the love of human father to give a glimpse in the love of our heavenly father.
God asks Abraham to sacrifice his son. The son of promise. Just as God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son, God the Father knew the day would come and He would sacrifice His own son.
32 He did not even spare his own Son but offered him up for us all. How will he not also with him grant us everything?
Romans 8:32
Isaac carried the weight of the sacrifice as he walked up the mountain
17 Carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called Place of the Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.
God stopped Abraham from sacrificing his son.
12 Then he said, “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.”
Genesis 22:
But God did not withhold His only son from us, all humanity.
10 Yet the Lord was pleased to crush him severely. When you make him a guilt offering, he will see his seed, he will prolong his days, and by his hand, the Lord’s pleasure will be accomplished.
God is not cruel. He is love and righteousness. He did this because He wanted to save us. To save us from ourselves.
1 Then Solomon began to build the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah where the Lord had appeared to his father David, at the site David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac. In his hand he took the fire and the knife, and the two of them walked on together.
6 We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished him for the iniquity of us all.
Jesus knew the cost when He came to earth. He came because of great love for you and me.
2 keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith. For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:2
Abraham was going to sacrifice Issac on Mt Moriah and God did sacrifice Jesus on Mt. Calvary. These 2 places are actually the same place.
In 135 AD Rome's Emperor Hadrian covered this traditional site of Golgotha and Jesus' tomb with a massive pavement. Two centuries later, Constantine removed it and built the first Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

God called Abraham knowing He was not going to expect the ultimate sacrifice. But God knew He was going to give the ultimate sacrifice.

9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout in triumph, Daughter Jerusalem! Look, your King is coming to you; he is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
This morning is Palm Sunday. We celebrate the triumphant entry of the King of kings and the Lord of lords into Jerusalem.
8 A very large crowd spread their clothes on the road; others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them on the road.
9 Then the crowds who went ahead of him and those who followed shouted: Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!
Has Jesus Christ had a triumphant entry into your heart? He is coming back for His church.
11 Then I saw heaven opened, and there was a white horse. Its rider is called Faithful and True, and he judges and makes war with justice.
12 His eyes were like a fiery flame, and many crowns were on his head. He had a name written that no one knows except himself.
13 He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his name is called the Word of God.
This morning, Jesus can be Lord of your life if He is not already. Embrace the salvation offered to you. This can be a great and mighty day. Next week is Eater, but today you can rise up in the new life of Jesus Christ.
9 Then the crowds who went ahead of him and those who followed shouted: Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!

33 “Instead, this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days”—the Lord’s declaration. “I will put my teaching within them and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
