Why Did Jesus Die?

On “Good Friday” and on a regular basis, we need to allow the Scriptures to remind us of how the word of God answers the question, “Why did Jesus dies?”
Today, we focus on two portions of the Scriptures that answer the question before us. Even as it is before, it is on the minds and hearts of others, especially today when we remember Jesus’ death.
Not because He was guilty - , , 22
Account of Jesus having been delivered to Herod and Pilate by the chief priests and scribes who were accusing Jesus of stirring up and misleading the people.
Pilate privately to chief priests and crowds.
Luke 23:4 ESV
Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.”
Lk
Herod questioned Jesus and with his soldiers mocked Jesus & treated Jesus with contempt -sent back to Pilate
Pilate twice affirmed to the chief priests and rulers of the people
Luke 23:14 ESV
and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. And after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him.
Lk 23:
Luke 23:22 ESV
A third time he said to them, “Why? What evil has he done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death. I will therefore punish and release him.”
Lk 23:
For our transgressions, iniquities, peace and healing -
Context - Good news of salvation, the whole earth will see the salvation of the Lord, promised suffering servant who would suffer and die for others.
Isaiah 52:7–10 ESV
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.” The voice of your watchmen—they lift up their voice; together they sing for joy; for eye to eye they see the return of the Lord to Zion. Break forth together into singing, you waste places of Jerusalem, for the Lord has comforted his people; he has redeemed Jerusalem. The Lord has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
Is 52:
Who will believe this report?
Isaiah 53:1 ESV
Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
He was pierced for our transgressions … the Lord laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:4–6 ESV
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Is 53:5-5
God the Father placed our sins and the penalty of our sins on His Son Jesus - the suffering servant
Penal substitutionary atonement
Jesus not only died, but he died for our sin ad for the penalty of our sin
For the salvation of those who do not know what they do -
Luke 23:34 ESV
And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.
On the day of Pentecost and in the days to follow, many who did not understand what they had done, through the preaching of the word and the work of the Holy Spirit that helped them to hear and understand.
Acts 2:21 ESV
And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
Acts
Acts 2:22–24 ESV
“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
Acts 2:22-
Acts 2:36 ESV
Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
Acts 2:38 ESV
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:
For the salvation of those who know what they have done -
Luke 23:40–43 ESV
But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
When we consider the God’s answer to why Jesus died, what should we do?
Make sure that by faith we have received the forgiveness that Jesus died.
Rom
Romans 5:6–9 ESV
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
2. Remember, rest in and testify/celebrate God’s amazing love that Jesus died for us.
No one expressed that better than Charles Wesley did in the hymn that he wrote within days of his conversion.
“And can it be that I should gain an interest in my Saviour’s blood?
Died He for me who caused His pain? For me who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be that Thou my God should die for me?
He left His Father’s throne above, so free, so infinite His grace;
Emptied Himself to show His love, and bled for Adam’s helpless race.
‘Tis mercy all, immense and free; for O my God, it found out me.
Long my imprisoned spirit lay fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray, I woke, the dungeon flamed with light.
My chains fell off, my heart was free; I rose, went forth and followed Thee.
No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him is mine!
Alive in Him my living head, and clothed in righteousness divine;
Bold I approach th’eternal throne and claim the crown through Christ my own.
Amazing love! how can it be that thou my God should die for me!
