Today’s message begins the most important week in human history
Today it begins with a huge celebration for Jesus!
Friday it ends by murdering Him...
Today we’re in Luke 19 and - Called “Palm Sunday”
Matthew 21:1–4 ESV
1 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,
Matthew 21:1–3 ESV

mt 21:
Jesus has been to Jerusalem many times before
Luke 19:28–34 ESV
28 And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’ ” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.”
lk 19:28-34
Jesus has been to Jerusalem many times before
This one is special - of course we know why now
Jesus asked specifically for this colt
He was fulfilling a prophecy
Matthew 21:4–5 ESV
4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, 5 “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
Matthew 21:4 ESV
4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,
Matthew 21:3–4 ESV
3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,
mt 21:
Comes from Zechariah 9:9
Zechariah 9:9 ESV
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Interesting - last week that guy said there were no Messianic signs...
When kings came into cities on donkeys, means PEACE
Often, kings ride on war horses
Don’t confuse with weakness
This is Jesus TRIUMPHAL entry
He is showing that PEACE is triumphant over WAR
HUMILITY over PRIDE
MEEKNESS over MALICE
He also wants one that has never been sat on
Luke 19:30 ESV
30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here.
Getting in the car, I’m in the driver’s seat
Tash wouldn’t even think to sit there
Ronnie might to challenge authority...
Only takes a look or a warning to move him
Jesus’ seat of authority belongs to ONLY HIM
Matthew 21:6 ESV
6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.
mt 21:6
Luke 19:31–34 ESV
31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’ ” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.”
lk 19:31-
He sends His disciples to go make the pickup
Reminds me of Robin
Go to the liquor store with letter from dad for cigarettes
They start untying him, and it’s like HEY!
Like the movies: FBI I’m commandeering your vehicle!
I’m curious about this, what just happened?
If you were parked and some guy grabbed your car keys
The Lord needs your Durango...
Um, no He doesn’t! Put that back!
I can think of three things:
1. He had that colt there specifically for the Lord
2. Jesus had this worked out ahead of time with a rental company (this was a real thing)
3. The Holy Spirit affected his understanding
You know, like a Jedi mind trick
This is the Colt the Lord is looking for
This is the Colt the Lord needs
He can go about his business
Move along
I wonder if we’re so willing to share our resources with God
I can tell you this, our church responded strong with giving this month
Not making up for missing the first week, we’re over normal amount
I was so touched by our faithfulness as a church
It’s encouraging to see that we stand against fear in this time
Switch to Matthew
Matthew 21:7–9 ESV
7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. 8 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
Matthew 21:7–11 ESV
7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. 8 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” 10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
mt 21:7-
mt 21:7-
This is where we get the name for “Palm Sunday”
So strange to me that we have to order palm branches here
Form Palm Sunday in California we just cut them out of our backyard
Laying this down = rolling out the red carpet
Shouting Howosiah-na! Or Hosanna!
Hebrew for SAVE US!
Wanted Jesus to save them - politically and nationally
They were ignoring the spiritual...
Go back to Luke
lk 19:39
Luke 19:39–40 ESV
39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
Switch to 12 for a moment
There are certain moments in Scripture that give me chills
One is when Moses asks God His name
Exodus 3:13 ESV
13 Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?”
Exodus 3:14 ESV
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ”
God says, “I AM WHO I AM.”
Man, what do you even do with that?!
This is another one...
In this crowd are people that saw Jesus’ most recent miracle
Raising Lazarus from the dead
This crowd had to be confident this was their Messiah
And it’s driving the pharisees nuts!
John 12:18–19 ESV
18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”
jn 12:18-19
jn 12:
Basically they’re having conversations like we’re having
“Well, I guess the economy is gonna crash and we’re all going to get Coronavirus! What are you gonna do? This is crazy...”
Pharisees are in the same boat
“Well, they’re worshipping Him like God and everyone is flocking to him. What are you gonna do? This is crazy...”
Satan knows he’s losing at this moment...
18-19
Nothing makes that more clear than the sound of God’s praises
The Pharisees definitely were...
Go back to Luke
The pharisees have had enough of this insolence!
Luke 19:39–40 ESV
39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
There are certain moments in Scripture that give me chills
I love the way God gives answers to impossible scenarios...
One is when Moses asks God His name
God says, “I AM WHO I AM.”
Adulterous woman
Picks up a stone
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone
This is another one...
Paying taxes to Rome
Who’s image is on this coin?
Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, and unto God what is God’s
Now this one: rebuke your disciples for praising and worshipping you!
No point. I WILL be praised and there’s nothing you can do
Even if I did, the stones would cry out because this needs to happen
Come back to this in a minute...
Here’s what Jesus does next:
Luke 19:41–42 ESV
41 And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
lk 19:4
Let’s think about Jesus’ reaction here...
He wants so bad for this holy city to be at peace
In verses 43 and 44 He explains what will happen to the city
If Adam and Eve listened to God...
They would have peace in the garden!
If Egypts former slaves would have listened to God...
They wouldn’t have had to wander in the wilderness!
If Israel under judges would have listened to God...
They wouldn’t have dealt with the evil of kings
If Judah would have listened to God...
They wouldn’t have been exiled to Bablylon
If Jerusalem would have listened to God...
They would live up to their name (city of peace)
But instead, the Temple will be destroyed in 70AD
In 135AD, Jews scattered for 1,815 years!
Jerusalem had a choice, just like us!
Let’s go back to the rocks...
If people go silent, God will let the rocks take over
Matthew 3:9 ESV
9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.
If we don’t want to be God’s people, He can find new ones in the rocks!
If we don’t want to praise Jesus, the rocks will cry out
Seems like rocks make better followers than people do...
Before that happens, we have that opportunity!
Rocks praise, rock become people
GOD NEVER GAVE UP ON US!
Instead, He made a way for us!
In 5 days, we celebrate the action that would change the world
Now you make a choice:
Will you choose to worship the Christ
To accept that gift of peace
Or will you leave that for the rocks?
