Why Make Disciples?

Because that’s what Jesus did.

Luke 19:10 NIV
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Because that’s what Jesus taught us to do.

Matthew 4:19 NIV
19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”

Because Jesus commands it

Matthew 28:19–20 NIV
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Mark 16:15 NIV
15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
Mk
Mark 16:15 NIV
15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
Mark 16:15–16 NIV
15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
Luke 19:10 NIV
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Because the early disciples modelled it.

Matthew 4:19 NIV
19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
Acts 5:42 NIV
42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.

How do we make disciples?

By teaching...

Matthew 28:20 NIV
20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Mt.

…And how do we teach?

To truly “know” something a person needs to:
understand and remember it in their minds
have the knowledge reside in their hearts
and act on that knowledge
To “teach” a person so that they can “know” like that we need to follow the “teaching square” *
*
* The “teaching square” comes from Mike Breen’s Building a Discipling Culture, where it is called a “leadership square”

Basically, to make disciples we must: TALK, LOVE and DO — with other Christ-followers

Just like Jesus TALKED to the people, LOVED them, and DID the will of God among them.
