Introduction

Good morning everyone,
I hope and pray you are well today. I hope this day finds you safe, secure and healthy.
I know that we were all hoping to be free from this by now, but the events of life do not always go the way we want them too. So we adapt and get used to the new norm for right now.
John 16 ESV
1 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3 And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. 4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 16 “A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. 25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.” 29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
New Sunday morning I will join you right here for a facebook live message and we will have some special music.
So I encourage you to plan on joining us next Sunday right here.
Today is Palm Sunday. Are you thankful for all that we remember and cherish between today and Next Sunday?
2000 years ago this day began the final journey to the cross for Jesus as He prepared to give His life for a ransom for sin to set the world free and save them.
its Palm Sunday. Are you thankful for all that we remember and cherish between today and Next Sunday?
We needed deliverance, we needed a Savior and Jesus came and Saved us… He took out punishment, our pain and our suffering and redeemed us. Set us free, gave us a new name and a new life in Him.
Wonderful...
Now this morning we are not going to look at His triumphal entry into the city, we are going back to the night of his arrest, He is still in the upper room with His disciples. Soon they will leave there and make their way to Gethsemane to the Olive grove, the garden and there Jesus will so be arrested, and sentenced to death.
But remember, they didn’t take His life, He laid it down as a perfect sacrifice to save the world, to save all those who would believe on His name and come after Him.
This morning let go to John chapter 17, I want to walk us through the high priestly prayer of Jesus.
Here we will examine 3 truths from this prayer that are important for us today.
Look at , verses 1-5
John 17:1–5 ESV
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

1. Prays for Himself

1. Prays for Himself

Jesus and the disciples are in the upper room, He has just shared the passover meal with the 11, Judas has already slipped away to do what the devil has placed into His heart.
This night is truly special, Jesus has taught them a great deal, but the most important is His soon approaching death. He has promised to them that if He goes away, He will come again,
He has promised to not leave them alone, but told them He would send another to walk with them in this life, so he is not leaving them as orphans. he is not leaving them alone. The disciples would never be alone and my friends the same is true for you today, you re never alone. God lovers you!
And finally He has ratified a new covenant with these men, one symbolizing His body and blood that would be laid down for their redemption.
And after these things, Jesus prays… He prays for himself, but it is not a selfish prayer in anyway. It is a prayer asking the Father to help Him complete the mission.
Lets look at it.
A covenant ratified by His own blood,
And now
verse 1
John 17:1 ESV
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you,
____________________
As Jesus begins to pray to the Father in heaven, there are 4 points right here to be aware of at this time.. 4 little snap hots for us to pay attention to as we unwrap tis passage. Look with me in verse 1
The Scripture says....
A. When He had spoke these things… Jesus has finished teaching them. he is turning his attention to something else, namely prayer. Now is the time…
B. He raised His eyes to heaven… He was giving His full attention to the Father in Heaven and seeking His help and blessing as He completed the mission for which He was sent into the world to accomplish.
C. He calls upon the Father, God the Father, His prayer is directed to the one who has loved him and given Him the Son this glorious task, Save the world! The Father is central to His life and He should be in our lives as well...
D. And the last point is that Jesus says the “Hour has come”. His death was at hand.
So many times people wanted to force roles upon Jesus. We see it from the Wedding in Canaan of Galilee and the turning of the water into wine to the feeding of the 5000 upon the mountain side over looking the sea of Galilee, but Jesus said my hour as not yet come, repeatedly He has testified to that fact...
That has all changed. It is time. His death is at hand. He will complete the will of the Father in Heaven.
Jesus has lifted His eyes toward heaven and listen to His heart. “...Father glorify Me your Son so that I can in turn glorify You...” The complete mission of God was the Son, sending him into the world, to save the world through is atoning death upon the cross. Jesus is asking the Father not selfishly to glorify Him.. but to help him complete the mission that He might in turn glorify the Father.
Prays for Himself
Do you remember Jesus as testified time and time again in the gospels, He said “I have come not to do my will, bu the will of the One who sent me...” He is talking about the Father.
The will of God is that Jesus, who has been given authority over all the world, over all flesh would lay down his life as a sacrifice for sin. Jesus will give eternal life to all who would believe and that my friends, that glorifies the Father
Jesus mission was to be the Lamb of God, to lay down His life as a sacrifice, forever satisfying the wrath of God, Where by we are no longer enemies of God but saved children who love and walk with the Father.
In this the Son and the Father are uniquely glorified and priased.
Think about this.. do you ever pray, Lord use my life to glorify your name?
We exist for His glory, not our own.
As we prepare to journey down this week, remembering each day his final steps toward the cross… How does that impact you for living?
Glorify the Father, Son and Holy Spirit with the way you live your life for Him.
Now lets move on to my second thought for the day.. are you ready.

2. Prays for His Disciples

Father glorify me so that
Prays for His Disciples
The second point that I could share with you is that Jesus then turns His attention to praying for those 11 men who will continue in the days to come.
These men will face great burdens, hardships, at times great suffering and yes even the threat of death. But they will push on for God’s glory and knowing that Jesus prays for them..They are blessed
Lets look at a section of the prayer
So listen as Jesus prays.... Verses 9-12
John 17:9–12 ESV
9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
if you look back to verse 6 you can see that Jesus begins this new section and He is speaking about those whom the Father has given to him. They received the Word of God with glad hearts believing that Jesus is the Messiah.
As we break into verse 9, Jesus says I am praying for them.
Why is Jesus praying for them? He knows they are living in a hostile world, one that is evil, one that will persecute these disciples on account of Jesus.
Now, look at this next phrase, Jesus says he is not praying for the world. Please don’t misunderstand what He is saying there.
He isn’t unconcerned, He loves the world, He came to die for the world. Jesus said on many occasions, he came to seek and to save that which was lost. So he is concerned for the world, it just isn’t the particular focus of His prayer at this point.
He is praying for those whom the Father had entrusted into his care, but note Jesus says - they (these disciples, soon to be Apostles) were the Father’s not His, they had just been entrusted into His care like David cared for the flocks of His Father.
Soon He will no longer be with them, soon they would learn to hear from God, finding the direction and places he would send them and would learn to trust in His power.
This task isn’t a easy one, That is why Jesus is asking the Father to keep them, but if you look down to verse 21, you can see the larger context of this.. not just keep safe, not just protected and knowing that God is their strong tower. All of this is important. But Jesus is asking that they be unified in their life and mission
Understand we are all his disciples, but the Lord pulls us together and has us work in unity for His glory. We are called to live and work for the glory of God, serving the greater purposes of His mission in the world.
To often Churches get lost focusing on the internal, worrying about our similarities or differences when in truth we are all brothers and sisters and being born again is the key for us in our lives.
Being unified as His children, we focus on the greater work of God, making disciples of all nations....
There in is the mission of God.
What are you focused on?
Your will, or His will?
Are you actively engaged in being a part of His mission to reach the world?
So lets move on to the last section or point this morning…

3. Prays for You....

The last portion of Jesus high Priestly prayer that I want to share with you this morning is the fact that Jesus prayed for those who would believe in the future.
Think about that… Jesus knew those who would believe in the days to come after His ascension back to the Father, whose in the immediate days and those in the far away future.
The last portion of Jesus high Priestly prayer that I want to share with you this morning is the fact that Jesus prayed for those who would believe in the future.
Lets go back to the text.... verses 20-26
John 17:20–26 ESV
20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”
So lets break this down....
A. He prays for their ministry to the world. Verse 20 Jesus says plainly, I am not praying for these only, but for those who will believe because of their word.
So lets see it for ourselves, verse 20 Jesus says plainly, I am not praying for these only, but for those who will believe because of their word.
So lets see it for ourselves, verse 20 Jesus says plainly, I am not praying for these only, but for those who will believe because of their word.
So lets see it for ourselves, verse 20 Jesus says plainly, I am not praying for these only, but for those who will believe because of their word.
So think if this… the disciples would begin a ministry of reconciliation and replication. They would preach and teach, providing a witness along with the word of God that people might believe that Jesus is the Son of God sent into the world to save the world.
Those new believers ( those who believed on the disciples witness) would then in turn to the same. They would grow, teach and provide a witness that those after them might believe.
That is the ministry of the Great Commission that Jesus will soon leave with His disciples.
B Jesus prays again for harmony. If we look at verse 21 we see how this ministry will be realized.
Again the call is for unity. Jesus is praying that we ( all who come after HIm) might be one just as Jesus and the Father are one. You see when we are in harmony with our Lord and with each other the world will see and believe the message of Jesus.
C. Jesus desires for us to be where He is… Friends, i love this verse, for we see what Jesus ultimately desires for us. Remember this is all happening at one time, chapter 13 to the end of chapter 17 all happens in the Upper Room before they leave for the Garden of Gethsemane.
And we see that Jesus desires that we reach heaven. If we look back to chapter 14, we see His heart of verse 2.
John 14:2 ESV
2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
Jesus is preparing to finish the work the Father sent Him into the world to do, to give His life as a sacrifice for sin. He would give His life on the cross to satisfy the debt man had in front of God, to atone for our sin. In doing so, We are reconciled to the Father and we are acceptable in His presence.
The most wonderful aspect is through salvation we will see Him, we will one day enter that place, the Father’s house that He has prepared for us. We are coming full circle just as Man walked and lived with God in the garden, so we are returning to His presence. Praise the Lord we shall behold Him.
D. Jesus desperately desires that the world would know His name...
At the beginning of verse 25, Jesus uses the term Righteous Father. This term points out clearly the difference between the Father and the world. The world is fallen, it has rejected and turned its back on God.
As such the world neither knows God or His will. But God in His love has made the Son known to the world, so that they in turn would know Him. The God if the New Testament is the same of the Old Testament. He has sown His love, His nurture and desire to heal their brokenness.
Jesus desires the world to be saved in and through him. That they would know Him and more also the Father that sent him into the world.
How wonderful it is that in the midst of our sinful world, in the midst of our brokenness and rebellion, He has loved us with a everlasting love.
A love that desires to redeem us from our sin.
So all through out this week I would encourage you to think, dwell on the love God has showed you. How he has loved you from the foundation of the world and has saved you.
And if you have trouble seeing God’s love and faithfulness, I would encourage you to pray, ask the Father to help you see Him more clearly and to heal your heart break.
In the midst of this pandemic, He is in control and He loves you.
Lets pray together
John 17:6–19 ESV
6 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. 8 For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
John 17 ESV
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. 6 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. John 18 ESV
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. 3 So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4 Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” 5 They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6 When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” 9 This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” 10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?” 12 So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. 13 First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people. 15 Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, 16 but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. 17 The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” 18 Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. 19 The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. 21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.” 22 When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?” 24 Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. 25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” 27 Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed. 28 Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. 29 So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30 They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.” 31 Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” 32 This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die. 33 So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” 35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” 36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” 37 Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” 38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him. 39 But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” 40 They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
