Greeting to all
Introduce today as Palm Sunday
Let them know about good Friday message by Shawn , and Easter Sunday Message by Ron Laeger
Memory Verse: (read)
riday message, and Easter Sunday Mesage

Set the stage:

I’m going to reading but as we go through this passage we will be jumping around the different authors because they have brought different detail about this event to light in the there each gospel.
This the the beginning of Jesus last week, as He has been teaching he has been traveling all over the countryside but has avoided going into the Capital city of Jerusalem.
This is all about to change as our scripture for today will find Jesus teaching once again this time just 2 miles outside of Jerusalem....

Read passage:

Break down the passage:

Overview:

This is the first event in what now is referred to as Passion week, it along with all the events we will discuss this week are recorded in all 4 gospels which is significant because out side of Passion week there are only 3 other events that appears in all 4 gospels.
This was the not first time Jesuses enters Jerusalem, but it was the first time He enters as a king as Mesa!
This account is going to have us
To really understand all that is going on here lets dive into these verses a little deeper.

Break Down The passage:

vs. 28: The beginning our passage indicates that Jesus was already teaching prior to this event taking place. He had spent the night prior at Zacchaeus house, and now he is out teaching and ready to make is entry into Jerusalem.
This first indication that this event is more than just a normal trip into town becomes apparent in vs.30 when Jesus instructs his disciples to go get a donkey and bring it back to him. (Read the passage vs.30-31)
So the decibels want into town and we see in verse 33 and following the exact thing Jesus predicted comes true!
This is significant because this is the fulfilling of a prophecy. In fact when Mathew and John record this event in scripture, they include reference to the prophecy this is fulfilling.
(Read Mathew 21:2-5)

telling them, “Go into the village ahead of you. At once you will find a donkey tied there, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to Me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, you should say that the Lord needs them, and immediately he will send them.”

4 This took place so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled:

5 Tell Daughter Zion,

“Look, your King is coming to you,

gentle, and mounted on a donkey,

even on a colt,

the foal of a beast of burden.” v

6 The disciples went and did just as Jesus directed them

Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

5  “Say to the daughter of Zion,

‘Behold, your king is coming to you,

humble, and mounted on a donkey,

on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”

6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them

This is the fulfillment of part of the first Oracle in the book of Zechariah chapter 9:9

The Coming King of Zion

9  Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!

Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!

Behold, your king is coming to you;

righteous and having salvation is he,

humble and mounted on a donkey,

on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!

Shout in triumph, Daughter Jerusalem!

Look, your King is coming to you;

He is righteous and victorious,

humble and riding on a donkey,

on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Zechariah 9:9–10 NASB95
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey. I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim And the horse from Jerusalem; And the bow of war will be cut off. And He will speak peace to the nations; And His dominion will be from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth.

9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!

Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem!

Behold, your king is coming to you;

He is cjust and endowed with salvation,

Humble, and mounted on a donkey,

Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

What is an Oracle? An Oracle is a divine message communicated through a human mediator to one or more human recipients.
divine message communicated through a human mediator to one or more human recipients.
Wells, S. (2016). Oracle. In J. D. Barry, D. Bomar, D. R. Brown, R. Klippenstein, D. Mangum, C. Sinclair Wolcott, … W. Widder (Eds.), The Lexham Bible Dictionary. Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press.
This oracle is about how God will establish his kingdom on earth. Jesus fulfilled some of these events during his early teachings, some were fulfilled before Jesus’ incarnation, and some will be fulfilled when He returns.
I don’t want to dive into this oracle entirely, however I wanted to illustrate here that the significance of this event is more than just a man named Jesus declaring himself to be King, this is God, Creator, who is making known who He is. And this fulfillment of prophecy is a portion of that body of evidence that proves this more than just a man.
Why a Donkey-
Returning to -38 read till end of 38)
There is a lot that happens her with a lot of meaning
Lets start with the statement being made here- This is the first time we see Jesus coming into the city of Jerusalem with tremendous authority declaring He IS King! This is a dramatic change in the way Jesus has been conducting himself with regards to the religious leaders. Up to now, he has avoid direct confutation with the leaders in the temple and when questioned has only spoke in a round about way with them. He spent most of his time avoiding Jerusalem all together.
Why a Donkey- This is very unique, although some times Kings did ride donkey’s it was very rare, and from what I can learn this situation would not be done with a donkey by any king. This would normally be done with a war horse. What this is saying I am King, but I come humbly to you. Imagine if you will, God, Creator saying I am God, but I humbly present myself to you, my creation. I don’t know about you but this blows my mind!
This also was a donkey that was unbroken. For those who don’t know about horses, this means this donkey had never been ridden. If you are unaware this is extremely unique to get on an unbroken animal and ride it. In-fact when I looked into it they say it take 4-8 weeks at best, normally this is a 90 day process to break a horse so it can be ridden and it looks like donkeys can take longer. The point that is being made here is that this is unique situation and it point to Jesus being sovereign over creation.
The laying of robes and palm branches on the road is an expression by the crowd that Jesus is king! Along with the praising by the crowed recored in all the Gospels except John.
However we know by what the crowd was saying that they did not understand what Jesus was there to do. They were aware that He was sent by God, but they did not understand that He was God. The Gospel of John tells us this in 12:16-18

16 His disciples did not understand these things at first. However, when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. 17 Meanwhile, the crowd, which had been with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify. 18 This is also why the crowd met Him, because they heard He had done this sign.

This declaration by Jesus was definitely not loss on the Pharisees by there reactions when Jesus arrived in town:
New American Standard Bible: 1995 update. (1995). (). La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation.
John records:
19 Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You see? You’ve accomplished nothing. Look—the world has gone after Him!”
The Holy Bible: Holman Christian standard version. (2009). (). Nashville: Holman Bible Publishers.
Matthew records:

10 When He entered Jerusalem, the whole city was shaken, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds kept saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee!”

Mark Records:
Luke Records:
39 Some of the Pharisees from the crowd told Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”
40 He answered, “I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the stones would cry out!”
The Holy Bible: Holman Christian standard version. (2009). (). Nashville: Holman Bible Publishers.
The reply of Jesus to the Pharisees was extremely confrontational, the Bible Knowledge Commentary explains it best:
Jesus responded that there must be some proclamation that He is the Messiah. If not, even inanimate objects (stones) would be called on to testify for Him. All history had pointed toward this single, spectacular event when the Messiah publicly presented Himself to the nation, and God desired that this fact be acknowledged.
Martin, J. A. (1985). Luke. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 2, p. 253). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.
At this point Jesus’ declaration of who He was was complete.
I hope that by breaking this down I have been able to show that this event set into motions that forever changed the world. As we go through this week and remember what Jesus did, this was God caring for his people in a way that only God could. God was in control then and He is now. It not easy understanding how God does things, the events of this week highlight that fact. God is in control and we can trust in Him for everything.
As we go through out this week, I pray that we take time to reflect on the other events that we are remembering during passion week, take time to read the other events, there are many to read about, and I feel that it helps to understand what they were seeing as the week want on leading up to Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday. So take some time, a lot of us have a lot of it right now, and study the events. If you have questions put them on mens and women's groups or contact the deacons, deaconesses, or myself.
