Again, what David is describing is an execution. And the reason why I belabor this point is this: David is establishing here that the Davidic King will be executed by hanging on a tree in order to bear the curse of His people’s sins.

his is David expositing what it means to be cursed by God. It means that God who has always perfectly loved His Son, for the first time in history, He knows pours out His perfect wrath on His Son. And His Son who has only eternally experienced the perfect affections of His Father, in His humanity He experiences God’s hatred for sin. Can you imagine that? You have only known one thing, but now for the first time you experience something completely different. The shock is enough to kill you.

He was, as a member of the Trinity, God very God. He had never experienced anything but perfect love and perfect intimacy with His Father. But now, in his darkest hour He finds Himself abandoned by God. This is not a seperation in nature or essence or substance. The trinity remained intact. Not for a moment did Jesus cease being God. The psalmist in verses 16–18 provides the explanation for his perception. The essential evidence David provides for his allegation of God‘s curse is that it is as if he is dead by the most gruesome execution indicative of that curse (vv. 17–19). God has put him to death and cursed him because he is dying the worst possible death for any leader. Jesus did not die as a martyr to a righteous cause or simply as an innocent man wrongly accused and condemned. Nor, as some suggest, did He die as a heroic gesture against man’s inhumanity to man. The Father could have looked favorably on such selfless deaths as those. But because Jesus died as a substitute sacrifice for the sins of the world, the righteous heavenly Father had to judge Him fully according to that sin.

The Father forsook the Son because the Son took upon Himself “our transgressions, … our iniquities” ( ). Jesus “was delivered up because of our transgression” ( ) and “died for our sins according to the Scriptures” ( ). He “who knew no sin [became] sin on our behalf” ( ) and became “a curse for us” ( ). “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross” ( ), “died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust” ( ), and became “the propitiation for our sins” ( ).

How could this happen? How could one member of the eternal Trinity turn his back on another member of the Trinity? I do not know. I cannot explain it. But I believe that this is what the Bible teaches, so great was the love of God for us and so great was the price Jesus willingly paid to save us from our iniquities.
