Into your hand I commit my spirit.

You have redeemed me, O Yahweh, faithful God.

This line from Psalm 31:5 is said to have often been recited at the period of the evening offering—about the time of Jesus’ death. (Roman readers might, but probably would not, have read this verse in the light of a Roman custom in which the nearest of kin receives the dying person’s breath in his own mouth, ensuring the spirit’s survival.)
