INTRODUCTION:
1. Focus is something we understand.
A. We tell a person trying to learn to hit a ball keep you eye on the ball.
1. We need to keep our eye’s on Jesus and stay focused.
1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Heb. 12.
BODY:
1. It is hard to keep focused even when times are good!
A. School
B. Work
C. Athletics
D. Family
1. Life is busy and it can be easy to loose our focus.
2. Godliness can take a back seat to worldliness.
8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.
A. There are a lot of things in this world that can profit a little.
1. Health is one of the things that can profit a little but will eventually will fail no matter what.
A. Hezekiah prayed that his life be extended.
1 In those days Hezekiah was sick and near death. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, went to him and said to him, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Set your house in order, for you shall die, and not live.’ ” 2 Then he turned his face toward the wall, and prayed to the Lord, saying, 3 “Remember now, O Lord, I pray, how I have walked before You in truth and with a loyal heart, and have done what was good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. 4 And it happened, before Isaiah had gone out into the middle court, that the word of the Lord came to him, saying, 5 “Return and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the Lord. 6 And I will add to your days fifteen years. I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for My own sake, and for the sake of My servant David.” ’ ”
2 Kings 20.1-
B. This extension was still only for a little while.
20 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah—all his might, and how he made a pool and a tunnel and brought water into the city—are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 21 So Hezekiah rested with his fathers. Then Manasseh his son reigned in his place.
20 And each one killed his man; so the Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them; and Ben-Hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with the cavalry. 21 Then the king of Israel went out and attacked the horses and chariots, and killed the Syrians with a great slaughter.
2 Kings 20.
B. Godliness is the only thing that is profitable for all things.
1 Kings
1. His word will never fail us.
45 Not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.
2. It is profitable for everything we need.
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
3. His word has given us everything that pertains to life and godliness.
2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
2 Pt 1.
C. Our focus needs to be on the perfect law of liberty.
25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
1. This is where Jesus’ focus always was.
29 And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.”
CONCLUSION:
1. Are you focused on the physical or Godliness?
