Matthew 27:26–29 KJV 1900
26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. 27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. 28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. 29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
Matthew 21:6–11 NKJV
6 So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. 8 And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Hosanna in the highest!” 10 And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?” 11 So the multitudes said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.”
Matthew 27
Zechariah 9:9 NKJV
9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.
The King is Coming
I have felt directed over the last two weeks to speak words of faith, hope and encouragement. The Spirit of the Lord has directed me to deliver words that would inspire us to fortify our faith and hold onto our hope in this season that we are in.
Today, I recognize that we are still in the midst of this great pandemic, yet I preach today not about what what we are facing, but reaching through what we are facing. For there is no pandemic, no tragedy, no disaster, no earthly government past, present nor looming in our future that will every change the power of the what took place ago 2,000 years ago. Coronavirus may alter the state of our world, the conditions of economy, the guidance of government…but message of the messiah does not merely alter our current conditions, but what Jesus accomplished 2,000 years ago, altered the very course of eternity.
And while todays message is not pertinent to equipping you with faith to prevail another week of quarantine, or survive this season of social separation…Rather I believe that today is a call for each of us to examine ourselves and ensure…not that we are prepared to combat Corona, but that we are prepared for enter eternity.
Don’t confuse my preaching with gloom and doom…don’t mistake the ministry of the word today as manipulation of an already fearful and uncertain time. For there have never been greater words of hope, that the promise of heaven! There will never be a message that brings greater assurance and certainty than the Good news message of a risen savior.
I rise today to tell you that “The King is coming”.
For some these words bring great anxiety and increased fear, yet it should not be so...
For the Prophet Isaiah declared “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
The message of the coming King should bring to our hearts great joy and anticipation.
A co
Yet, we find as we read the account of the writings in the Gospels that even 2,000 years ago, the news of the coming King was, even then NOT received with rejoicing and anticipation.
Even in the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on this very day 2,000 years ago…Palm Sunday…as the multitudes gathered to celebrate Jesus…as they laid their coats upon the ground and gathered palm branches to line the path, upon which the donkey her road upon would walk…They were not celebrating a coming King...
No, even as they made their way into Jerusalem with the multitude singing ““Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Hosanna in the highest!”
The very next verse tells us that the entire city was moved...
See its easy to get swept away in the hype of worship…its easy to get swept away in moments of emotional uncertainty and simply do what others around you are doing...
But the message of messiah…the message of Jesus Christ is not just to pacify our anxiety of our present pandemic…No…The message of the messiah is here to change your eternity!
And if we aren’t careful our walk with God is little more than an emotional response to the crowd around us.
We are moved because Jesus is moving. We are moved because the crowds are moving...
And while there is nothing wrong with being moved by the move of Jesus...
The very next verse reveals to us the danger of a walk with God that never moves beyond emotion. It never breaks beneath the surface of feeling and reaches to the foundation of faith...
For vs. 10, right after telling us that the entire city was moved, it reveals that the people began to look to one another saying “who is this”?
Last month, my dad and I had gone down to Florida for a few days. We were in a restaurant eating breakfast and there were a couple of men sitting at the table next to us. Throughout breakfast, I noticed people staring at one of them, pointing at him. I could tell by the way that others were acting, that he was someone of celebrity status. Even though I had no idea who it was, based upon the reaction of others, I waited for the opportunity to ask him for his autograph. The opportunity never came but I did get a sneak picture of him. Found out later that he was a former all-star Major League Baseball player…but my desire to get his autograph and what prompted me to sneak a picture of him wasn’t that I recognized him or knew his identity..it was entirely based upon the response of the crowd.
Who is this?
It is very possible to just be swept away in the moment…caught up in the emotion, yet still be wondering “who is this”!
And as the city is being moved…and the question is being asked “who is this”, the next verse tells us that the response from the multitude was “this is Jesus the prophet”
and he hosannas continued. And the parade of celebration carried on. The palm branches continued to be waved, the hosannas continued to be shouted...
Because When we find ourselves in a place of uncertainty, we are OK with a prophet!
When we are struggling with fear, uncertainly, worry and anxiety, we will always make room for a prophet.
Biblically the role of a prophet is defined in
Deuteronomy 18:18 NKJV
18 I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.
A prophet is a man that has a Word from God in his mouth.
Amos 3:7 NKJV
7 Surely the Lord God does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.
A prophet is a man that God has revealed His plans to
Hosea 12:13 NKJV
13 By a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, And by a prophet he was preserved.
God uses prophets to protect and preserve his people
Ephesians 4:11–12 NKJV
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
Ephesians chapter 4 vs. 11-1
God uses prophets to equip and to edify…to build up and strengthen.
All of those are things that we need in times of uncertainty:
we need someone that has a word from God;
We want to know what is the plan of God…what does all of this mean? What is God accomplishing through all of this?
We need that Word from God that will preserve us
And we need the office of the prophet to strengthen and build us up.
In times of uncertainty…We need a prophet.
And if every there was a time of uncertainty, it was the day that Jesus came on a donkey riding through Jerusalem.
Hosannah…blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord…As long as it is a prophet that is coming, let the party continue!
As long as its a Word that God has for me…let the confetti fly and the palm branches wave....
and let me state that I am not taking away from the fact that indeed one of the offices that Jesus fulfilled, was the office of a prophet.
But the triumphal entry of Jesus as prophesied by Zechariah, was not about the procession of a prophet coming to deliver a Word to the people...
No…it was the procession of a king coming to establish his government and authority among His people...
Matthew 27:26–29 NKJV
26 Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified. 27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him. 28 And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
*replace “he” with Pilate in vs. 26
Deuteronomy 18:18–19 NKJV
18 I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. 19 And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.
The same multitude that shouted Hosannah at the procession of the prophet shouted “crucify him” when he was proclaimed to be King...
The same crowd that waved palm branches at the hope of a Word for their uncertainty, shook angry fists at the thought of his authority and rule in their lives.
Yes I want to know what God’s plan is…give me a prophet…but I don’t want any rules or order for how I should live…crucify the King
Yes, I want a protector and that one that will preserve me…so give me a prophet…but to ask me to surrender my will and serve at his bidding…crucify the king!
yes, I want a prophet that will build me up and strengthen me....so give me a prophet…but to require humility and submission…crucify the king!
In these times of uncertainty that we are in…I know that we all have room for the Prophet in our lives…Hosannah…blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord...
And I believe that the office of the prophet is still at work…
I do believe that God is still speaking to his church!
I do believe that God still has a plan that he is revealing to His church!
I do believe that as the Prophet, Jesus will preserve his church through these trying days!
I do believe that he is going to equip and edify his church!
But…the King is coming!
Revelation 19:11–16 NKJV
11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. 15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS
Revelation 19:11
The King is coming!
Wherever you may be today…whatever you might be doing…I ask you to welcome the King!
I know that there are many of you right now that might be listening to this preacher because you need a Word to settle your uncertainty…but what you need today is not a prophet…you need a King!
The King is not coming back for those that are just looking for a word, a plan, protection and encouragement…The King is coming for those that need a savior! For those that are prepared to no longer serve the gods of this World but to surrender their lives to Him!
The King is calling for your surrender!
If Jesus were just a prophet…we would have no victory over sin! We would have no victory over death!
but he is the King…with all power and all authority!
he has conquered death, hell and the grave!
On the day of his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, they that were moved asked Who is he....let me tell you who Jesus us!
He is the Word in the beginning! He is the alpha, the Omega, the beginning and the ending…He is Wonderful, counselor, the mighty God, the everlating father and the prince of peace. he is the waymaker, the healer, the deliverer, my strength and my song.
He is the father in creation
The son in redemption
The Holy Ghost in regeneration...
he is the great High priest.
The lamb that was slain from the foundation of the world
The lion of Judah
and He is King of kings and Lord of Lords!!!
