Jesus, Our King
Matthew 21:1-11
1 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,
2 saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me.
3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.”
4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,
5 “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.
7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them.
8 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?”
11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

5 “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”

9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
11 Behold, the Lord has proclaimed to the end of the earth: Say to the daughter of Zion, “Behold, your salvation comes; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.”

Jesus made himself nothing so we could be something, redeemed.

Opening Up Matthew It Highlights Jesus as Both King and Prophet (vv. 8–11)
Jesus has been commissioned by God both to declare the kingdom of heaven (as a prophet) and to inaugurate it (as a king).
Out of all the titles Jesus has the one most important is ‘Savior’
Crowd hailed him a prophet
Pharisees saw him a threat and planned to kill him
1 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch.
2 The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give.
3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married.
5 For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.
6 On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the Lord in remembrance, take no rest,
7 and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth.
8 The Lord has sworn by his right hand and by his mighty arm: “I will not again give your grain to be food for your enemies, and foreigners shall not drink your wine for which you have labored;
9 but those who garner it shall eat it and praise the Lord, and those who gather it shall drink it in the courts of my sanctuary.”
10 Go through, go through the gates; prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway; clear it of stones; lift up a signal over the peoples.
11 Behold, the Lord has proclaimed to the end of the earth: Say to the daughter of Zion, “Behold, your salvation comes; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.”
12 And they shall be called The Holy People, The Redeemed of the Lord; and you shall be called Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken.

recompense=Make amends to (someone) for loss or harm suffered; compensate.
Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem as a lamb being led to slaughter.
A lamb goes unknowingly to his doom, but not Jesus. He was fully aware of what price he was to pay as recorded three times in the Gospel of Matthew
21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.

He comes invisibly, by His Spirit in the word and sacraments (baptism and the Lords supper) to sanctify us.
He will come again visible to all, not as a servant but in glory ()
My encouragement to you this morning is to know that Jesus has come and paid the penalty of our sin. He makes himself known through the preaching of His word, the word of our testimony and the empowering of His Holy Spirit.
During times like these we have to be careful. The Jews of Jesus’ day were looking for an immediate solution to their problem, they were being ruled by the Romans, they were not free, but oppressed. They misunderstood the prophets and believed the messiah would come in the form of worldly king who would free them from their situation. They misunderstood the scriptures.
Today we are crying out to the Lord for healing in our land, for provision for those who have lost jobs and a paycheck. We are told to do that in the Bible. Do not lose faith or hope. Healing is coming, provision is coming. Keep your eyes on Jesus, trust him with your salvation first and the rest will follow. Be careful not to miss the Lord working in this current crisis. He has brought us to it and he will bring us through it.
Today let us celebrate the beginning of the Holy week. The king has entered the city, his time has now come to give his life for our sins.
