1 Peter 3:10–12 ESV
10 For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; 11 let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
There is a great need for Self-Control in the Christian life.
Other words that could be used in place of Self-Control:
Discipline
Temperance
Sober-Minded
Self-Control has several meanings:
(1) To obey;
(2) Subjection to authority;
(3) to educate;
(4) to bring under control.
The Christian must learn to bring self under control—Galatians 2:20.
There are several dangers in a Christian having discipline:
(1) Selfish ambitions;
(2) Selfish desires;
(3) Selfish plans.
LACK OF Self-Controlled MEANS A LACK OF CONSECRATION TO GOD!

I. Self-Controlled HEART/ EMOTIONS

A. Cleansed Heart

Matthew 5:8
Matthew 5:8 ESV
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
The Prophet Jeremiah tells of the heart being wicked
Jeremiah 17:9
Jeremiah 17:9 ESV
9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
Therefore it must be cleansed, and brought under God’s control!

B. Controlled Heart

Psalm 139:23–24
Psalm 139:23–24 ESV
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! 24 And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
David prays that God would search his heart.
Allow the x-ray eyes of God to look into your heart.
Allow him to show you what is in your heart and bring it under control.

C. Consecrated Heart

Proverbs 4:23
Proverbs 4:23 ESV
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
Unless the heart is cleansed and purified, it will be filled with evil and sin
Matthew 15:19
Matthew 15:19 ESV
19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.

D. Christ-like heart

Proverbs 3:5
Proverbs 3:5 ESV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart.
Only Christ can change our hearts.
Ezekiel tells of the change of heart
Ezekiel 36:26
Ezekiel 36:26 ESV
26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

II. Self-Controlled HABITS/ ACTIONS

A. Daily Habits

Galatians 5:16
Galatians 5:16 ESV
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
The only way to have good habits is to walk in the Spirit.

B. Dedicated Habits

Philippians 4:5
Philippians 4:5 ESV
5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand;
“Let everyone see that you are unselfish and considerate in all you do. Remember that the Lord is coming soon”—Living New Testament.

C. Divine Habits

Matthew 5:16
Matthew 5:16 ESV
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
All we as Christians should bring honor and glory to God.
If our habits do not bring honor and glory to God, then they are not the right habits!

D. Determined Habits

Daniel 1:8
Daniel 1:8 ESV
8 But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.
Because Daniel determined not to defile himself, it changed his whole life.
Our daily habits do affect our daily lives!

III. Self-Controlled HEAD/ MIND

If Satan controls the mind, he will control the person’s life!

A. Christ-like Mind

Philippians 2:5
Philippians 2:5 ESV
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
All Christians should have the mind of Christ!
Notice the words of Jesus, “For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you”
John 13:15
John 13:15 ESV
15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.

B. Controlled Mind

Proverbs 16:32
Proverbs 16:32 ESV
32 Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.
Ruling the Spirit, or controlling the mind is more important than the mighty man!

C. Cleansed Mind

Psalm 51:2
Psalm 51:2 ESV
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!
David asks the Lord to cleanse him. As a person thinks, so is he
Proverbs 23:7
Proverbs 23:7 ESV
7 for he is like one who is inwardly calculating. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

D. Consecrated Mind

Psalm 19:14
Psalm 19:14 ESV
14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
Every word and thought should be acceptable unto the Lord.
Conclusion:
Do you practice discipline daily? Discipline will lead you near to God. It will make you a better Christian. Discipline is demanding. Discipline may be hard to practice, but it will bring delightful results. The Bible teaches us that we should practice daily discipline. The Bible is filled with many examples of people who failed to discipline themselves, and as the result, they backslid and went into sin!
