I.      Col. 3:5-6.

A.  Paul is saying, “Mortify or Put to death whatever belongs to your earthly sinful nature.”

1.    This “earthly nature” is the “old self” (or “sinful nature” or “old man”)

a)       Look at EPH 4:22.

b)    We should not go back to our old nature, we should not live as we did before.

c)     (2 COR 5:17) Says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

B.       In this list here Paul give a list of what not to do, but he gives a similar list in EPH 5:3-5. (Turn there).

1.    People that are following this lower nature are not going to inherit the kingdom of God.

a)    This is the work of the children of disobedience and Paul says in Col 3:6 that the WRATH of GOD cometh upon the children of disobedience.

C.  Let’s go back and read verse 5 again.

1.    At the very end of verse 5 he says, that these sin are idolatry.”

a)     Idolatry is the worship of false gods.

b)    So basically what Paul is saying is that sexual lust and greed is idolatry.

II.   Col 3:7-9

A.  At one time the Colossian Christians used to walk or live according to the ways of the world. (Before they were saved)

B.  He says in Verse 8, “But now you have put off these things.”

1.    He then goes on with another list, but at the end of verse 9 he says, “ye have put off the old man with his deeds.”

C.  Going back to verse 5 & ,6 Paul talks about some sins that I think it is pretty clear that those thing are to done away with.

1.    But in verses 8 & 9 he talks about more common sins, but even these sins need to be put away.

a)    He literally says, “Strip or throw these things off.”

b)    A forceful and deliberate act of riding yourself of these things.

2.    There are 6 sin the he mentions here.

a)    ANGER

(1)  Anger isn’t always a sin, but it can be. (Eph 4:26), Says, “Be ye angry, and sin not:”

b)    WRATH

(1)  In (Gal 5:20) it refers “wrath to a work of the flesh.

c)     3rd MALICE

(1)  Malice means, “Ill-will, spitefulness, desire to hurt or injure.”

(2)  Also means, “Hatred against a person that goes on and on, intense and long lasting bitterness against a person.”

d)    4th BLASPHEMY

(1)  That is “Speech that slanders, insults, hurts, injures, and shows contempt.

e)     5th is the sin of FILTHY COMMUNICATION

(1)  Which is foul speaking, low and obscene speech. Or shameful or abrasive speech.

f)      6th is LYING

(1)  Paul says, “Lie not one to another.”

3.    Why are we to put off these things?

a)    Because we have put off the “Old Man with his deeds.”

III. Col 3:10

A.  We are to put on the “NEW MAN.”

B.  How do we put on the NEW MAN?

1.    It’s not so much that we have to step into a new suit, but rather we are to walk in the newness of life.

2.    The Bible tells us that we are a NEW CREATURE.

a)    When we received Jesus as our Lord and savior, our spirit was recreated. We became brand new as a new babe.

b)    The old things passed away. The old man passed away.

C.  Now the KJV says that this new man “Is Renewed in knowledge.”

1.    The actual Greek says, “Is BEING renewed in knowledge.”

2.    We are in a continual state of being renewed.

a)    The idea here is that in order for us to be victorious over sin (and really over the devil) we have to continuously be renewed.

(1)  Paul made reference to this continual state of renewal often.

(a)   Look at 2Cor 4:16, this was a renewing work of the Holy Spirit.

(b)   Look at Rom 12:2, this word “transformed” is actually the Greek work which we get “metamorphosis,” a total change from inside out.[1]

(i)     This metamorphosis only take place by a continual input of God’s Word, prayer, and Christian fellowship, and lifestyle[2]

(c)   Turn to Eph 4:23
